Chapter 6 - The Man Who Thought He Was Untouchable

The basement door was covered with fresh scratches when I placed my hand on the lock and whispered: "Someone has been here."
Inside the hidden room, I found my father's missing files and a recording labeled with my name. "Faye Morgan. Listen alone." I suddenly realized the person who hid the truth from me had been inside my home all along.
I stood in front of the basement door for almost a full minute.
The house looked exactly the same.
The same walls.
The same staircase.
The same hallway where I used to run as a child.
But now every memory felt different.
Because secrets had been hiding between those walls.
My father had known.
My mother had known.
And someone had spent twelve years making sure I never looked closely enough.
I turned the lock.
It opened.
That was the first thing that scared me.
Because I expected resistance.
A broken lock.
A hidden mechanism.
Something.
Instead...
The door opened like someone wanted me to find what was behind it.
I stepped inside.
The basement smelled old.
But not abandoned.
Someone had cleaned parts of it recently.
The dust on the shelves was untouched.
Except for one area.
A table in the corner.
A chair.
A laptop.
And a small box.
Waiting.
I didn't move immediately.
My training told me something simple.
If something looked too easy...
It usually wasn't.
I called the security team.
Then I entered.
The first thing I noticed was the wall.
Photographs.
Documents.
Notes.
My father had built a timeline.
Not of his life.
Of someone else's.
I moved closer.
The first picture was Edric.
Much younger.
Standing outside an office building.
The second picture was Evelyn Cross.
The third...
Made my heart stop.
My mother.
I stared at the photograph.
My mother was standing beside Evelyn.
Not recently.
Years ago.
Before I knew who Evelyn was.
Before I knew any of this existed.
I grabbed the picture.
On the back were three words.
"She helped me."
I felt my anger rise.
Because every person I trusted had a different version of the truth.
And every version left me standing in the dark.
I opened the box.
Inside were dozens of documents.
My father's handwriting covered every page.
Dates.
Names.
Locations.
Evidence.
And one sentence repeated over and over.
"Edric is not the beginning."
I stopped.
Because I thought he was.
I thought Edric was the person who destroyed my family.
The person who hurt Chloe.
The person who lied.
But my father had been warning me about something bigger.
I picked up another file.
The title was simple.
"Project Cross."
Inside was information about financial transfers.
False identities.
Missing records.
People whose names appeared and disappeared.
Then I saw something.
A signature.
Evelyn Cross.
I flipped through the pages faster.
The final document had my father's name.
Daniel Morgan.
And underneath...
A statement.
"I confirm that Evelyn Cross is the only person I trust with this information."
I froze.
Because my father had trusted her.
But Edric feared her.
My phone vibrated.
I looked down.
A message.
Unknown number.
"You're finally seeing what your father saw."
I stared at it.
Then another message appeared.
"Ask yourself why Edric never left."
That question bothered me.
Because it was true.
After my father died, Edric didn't disappear.
He didn't run.
He stayed.
He married my mother.
He moved into my father's house.
He raised Chloe.
He became part of our family.
Unless...
That was the plan.
I heard footsteps upstairs.
I immediately closed the folder.
Someone was inside the house.
I moved silently toward the basement stairs.
My hand reached for my phone.
Then I heard a voice.
"Faye."
I stopped.
My mother's voice.
I walked upstairs.
She was standing in the hallway.
Alone.
"You shouldn't be here."
I stared at her.
"You knew about the basement."
She looked down.
That was her answer.
"How long?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Since before you came home."
I felt something inside me break.
"Mom."
She looked at me.
"I was trying to keep you alive."
I shook my head.
"No."
My voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
"You were trying to keep the secret alive."
She cried.
"I didn't know what else to do."
"Tell me the truth."
Silence.
Then:
"I saw your father the night he disappeared."
The words hit me harder than anything.
I couldn't breathe.
"You said he died."
She closed her eyes.
"He wanted everyone to believe that."
"Why?"
She looked toward the basement.
"Because someone was watching."
I stepped closer.
"Who?"
She whispered:
"Edric."
I didn't understand.
"You just said Edric was part of it."
"He was."
"Then why did he stay?"
My mother looked terrified.
"Because he was searching for what your father left behind."
Everything became clear.
Edric wasn't staying because he loved our family.
He was staying because he was looking.
For twelve years.
Inside my house.
Around my family.
Waiting.
I looked back toward the basement.
"What did Dad leave?"
My mother hesitated.
Then whispered:
"The truth about why he really died."
Before I could answer, the front door opened.
My mother froze.
I turned.
Edric stood in the doorway.
But he wasn't alone.
Two men were behind him.
Not police.
Not security.
He looked at me calmly.
Almost peacefully.
That was what scared me.
Because he wasn't surprised.
He wasn't angry.
He was prepared.
"Faye."
I said nothing.
His eyes moved toward the basement.
"You finally found it."
My hand tightened.
"You knew."
He smiled slightly.
"I knew you would eventually."
The confidence in his voice made my stomach turn.
"You hurt Chloe."
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
"I made mistakes."
I stepped forward.
"No."
My voice became colder.
"You made choices."
He looked at me.
Then laughed quietly.
"You really became your father."
I froze.
"What did you say?"
Edric walked closer.
"You think you are uncovering the truth."
He pointed toward the basement.
"But your father made the same mistake."
"What mistake?"
He smiled.
"Trusting the wrong person."
I looked at my mother.
She looked terrified.
Then Edric said something that changed everything.
"The person who betrayed your father was never me."
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
"Who?"
Edric looked directly at my mother.
May you like
And said:
"Ask her why she was holding the gun when Daniel Morgan disappeared."
