Chapter 6 - The Name Beneath the Ink

Sienna read the name three times.
Adrian Cross.
"No."
Richard stared at her phone.
"What is it?"
She turned the screen.
He sank into the chair.
"Jonathan knew?"
"He wrote the letter."
Sienna called Margaret.
"Come to the study."
Twenty minutes later, Margaret entered.
She saw Sienna's face.
Then the document.
Margaret stopped walking.
"Tell me it's false," Sienna said.
Margaret couldn't.
That hurt more than the answer.
Sienna stood behind Jonathan's desk.
"Was Adrian Cross my biological father?"
Margaret sat.
"Yes."
One word.
Thirty-five years rearranged.
"Did Dad know?"
"From the beginning."
"How?"
Margaret's voice shook.
"Jonathan and I separated briefly after Elizabeth disappeared. We were destroyed. I blamed him for Northstar. He blamed me for contacting investigators."
"And Cross?"
"He knew exactly how vulnerable I was."
Sienna looked away.
Margaret continued.
"It happened once. I regretted it before morning."
"Then you became pregnant."
"Yes."
"Why did Jonathan raise me?"
Margaret started crying.
"Because he loved you."
Sienna's jaw tightened.
"Don't make this sentimental."
"It's the truth. When I told him, he said Adrian would never have you."
Sienna remembered Jonathan teaching her to ride a bicycle.
Jonathan sitting through terrible school concerts.
Jonathan quietly slipping twenty dollars into her hand before college.
Jonathan refusing to ask about classified deployments.
Her father.
DNA didn't change that.
"Did Adrian know?"
"Jonathan told him you were his daughter."
"Why?"
"To protect you."
Sienna understood.
Jonathan had falsified the record.
Cross believed Sienna wasn't his.
Until recently.
"What changed?"
Margaret shook her head.
Sienna knew.
Northstar had gathered medical information.
Eventually someone compared DNA.
Adrian discovered the truth.
The succession file.
LONG-TERM SUCCESSION CANDIDATE.
Cross didn't want Sienna merely because she was capable.
He wanted his daughter.
Sienna felt sick.
Maya called.
"We found Elizabeth."
"Montana?"
"Yes."
"Cross?"
"Likely there."
Sienna's decision came immediately.
"I'll coordinate with federal authorities."
Maya hesitated.
"There's more."
"Go."
"The financial authorization wasn't forged."
"What?"
"The transfers using your credentials were cryptographically valid."
"I didn't make them."
"I know."
"Then how?"
"Someone built the authorization system around your identity years ago. Your biometric profile is the master key."
Sienna closed her eyes.
Cross had designed Northstar so that eventually she could control it.
Without knowing it existed.
Her inheritance wasn't just Falcon Ridge.
She was the key to Northstar itself.
That evening, a joint federal operation surrounded the Montana facility.
Sienna wasn't supposed to enter.
She did anyway.
Not as commander.
As Elizabeth's sister.
Cross contacted her before the tactical teams moved.
"Come alone or she dies."
Sienna knew he expected obedience.
She also knew men like Cross confused compliance with surrender.
She entered the facility without a visible weapon.
Cross waited in the central operations room.
He was older than she remembered.
Gray hair.
Thin face.
Same eyes.
Her eyes.
Elizabeth sat nearby.
Unrestrained.
That was deliberate.
Cross smiled.
"Sienna."
"Let her go."
"Eventually."
Elizabeth looked at her.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For bringing you here."
Cross smiled.
"She still thinks she had a choice."
Sienna ignored him.
"You killed Jonathan."
Cross's smile faded.
"He was dying already."
"Vale accelerated it."
Silence.
Confirmation.
Sienna felt rage.
She kept it contained.
"You murdered my father."
"I am your father."
"No."
The answer came instantly.
Cross flinched.
Sienna stepped closer.
"Jonathan Sterling taught me how to read. He sat beside my bed when I had pneumonia. He drove fourteen hours because I broke my wrist at school and Mom couldn't get there."
Cross's expression hardened.
"He lied to you."
"He protected me from you."
"I gave you everything you became."
"You watched."
"I selected your assignments."
Sienna froze.
Cross smiled.
"Every promotion. Every opportunity. Every door."
Sienna understood the deepest violation.
He had manipulated her career.
Or believed he had.
"You think that makes my achievements yours?"
"It makes them ours."
"No."
Cross's eyes narrowed.
"You were built for this."
He activated the main display.
Northstar networks appeared across the screen.
"Your biometric authorization can take control."
"Why would I?"
"Because governments fail. Politicians change. Institutions become weak. Northstar doesn't."
"You abducted a six-year-old."
Cross looked at Elizabeth.
"A necessary measure."
Elizabeth recoiled.
Sienna's voice went cold.
"You murdered my father."
"He betrayed the mission."
"You surveilled me for seventeen years."
"I protected you."
"You don't know what that word means."
Cross stepped toward her.
"Authorize the transfer."
"No."
"Then Elizabeth dies."
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
Sienna looked at her sister.
Then at Cross.
"Okay."
Elizabeth stared.
Cross smiled.
Sienna placed her hand on the biometric scanner.
The system activated.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED.
COLONEL SIENNA STERLING.
MASTER AUTHORIZATION AVAILABLE.
Cross moved closer.
"Transfer control."
Sienna entered the command.
The screen changed.
Cross smiled.
Then the alarms began.
"What did you do?"
Sienna looked at him.
"What my father spent seventeen years preparing me to do."
Every Northstar archive began transferring.
Not to Sienna.
To federal evidence servers.
Cross lunged for the console.
Locked.
"You can't!"
"I just did."
He grabbed Sienna.
Elizabeth struck him from behind.
Cross staggered.
The tactical team breached the room.
"Federal agents! Hands!"
Cross reached inside his jacket.
Sienna moved first.
She drove him against the console and pinned his arm before he could draw the weapon.
Agents surrounded him.
Cross stared up at her.
"You destroyed your inheritance."
Sienna looked down at him.
"No."
She glanced toward Elizabeth.
"I found it."
Cross was dragged away.
Elizabeth stood shaking.
Sienna approached slowly.
Neither woman knew what sisters were supposed to do after thirty-five stolen years.
Elizabeth solved it.
She hugged Sienna.
Sienna held her.
For a moment, rank didn't matter.
Northstar didn't matter.
Money didn't matter.
They were simply two daughters whose father had spent his life trying to bring one home while keeping the other alive.
Hours later, Sienna's phone rang.
Peter Sloan.
"You need to return to the estate."
"Why?"
"Probate court received another document."
"What document?"
"A second will."
Sienna stopped.
"From whom?"
"Your father."
"What does it say?"
Peter hesitated.
"You need to see the witness signature."
Sienna looked at Elizabeth.
"Whose signature?"
May you like
Peter answered.
"Elizabeth Sterling's."
