Chapter 6 - The Enemy Inside The Company

Nathan Caldwell had spent his entire life believing one thing.

Numbers did not lie.

Contracts did not lie.

Data did not lie.

People did.

And now, standing inside his dark office at midnight, staring at a photograph of himself and Claire taken by someone who had been inside the room with them, Nathan finally understood the truth.

The most dangerous threat to Meridian One was not outside the building.

It was inside.

The next morning, Nathan canceled every meeting.

Investors waited.

Board members complained.

Executives demanded answers.

He ignored all of them.

For the first time in twenty-five years, Nathan Caldwell was not running his company.

He was investigating it.

Claire sat across from him in a private conference room.

A laptop was open between them.

The flash drive Martin left behind contained thousands of files.

But one folder remained locked.

Nathan had tried three different security systems.

All failed.

Claire watched him.

“Martin wanted someone specific to open that.”

Nathan looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because he knew your security.”

Nathan leaned back.

“You think he protected it for me?”

“No.”

Claire looked at the encrypted folder.

“I think he protected it from them.”

Nathan stared at the screen.

The folder name was simple.

FINAL REVIEW.

Tomorrow.

The federal infrastructure panel would arrive.

Tomorrow, Meridian One would either become the biggest success of Nathan’s career...

or the biggest disaster.

He looked at Claire.

“How do we open it?”

She thought for a moment.

“Martin was careful.”

“Yes.”

“He wouldn’t use a password connected to himself.”

“Why?”

“Because if someone was searching for it, they would check everything about him.”

Nathan nodded.

“Then what?”

Claire looked around the room.

“Something only he would remember.”

Nathan opened Martin’s personal records.

Birthdays.

Addresses.

Family information.

Nothing worked.

Then Claire noticed something.

“Wait.”

Nathan stopped.

She pointed at the screen.

“Martin’s daughter.”

Nathan looked.

A name.

Emily Keene.

“What about her?”

“Her birthday.”

Nathan entered it.

Denied.

Claire shook her head.

“Not that.”

Nathan looked at her.

“What then?”

She pointed at Martin’s resignation letter.

“He mentioned her.”

Nathan opened the letter again.

One sentence stood out.

“My greatest mistake was believing good people always win.”

Claire looked at the words.

“Try that.”

Nathan typed.

GOODPEOPLE.

The screen changed.

The folder opened.

Both of them became silent.

Inside were videos.

Documents.

Photos.

And one file labeled:

MERIDIAN ONE - INTERNAL RECORDING.

Nathan opened it.

The video began.

A conference room.

Six people sitting around a table.

Nathan recognized all of them.

Thomas Voss.

The financial officer.

The government consultant.

Several senior executives.

Nathan watched himself from the outside.

A man who had trusted every person in that room.

Thomas spoke first.

“The approval is tomorrow.”

The financial officer nodded.

“Once the funding clears, nobody can stop the project.”

Nathan’s expression hardened.

Another person asked:

“What about Martin?”

Thomas leaned back.

“He won’t be a problem.”

Claire looked at Nathan.

Nathan did not move.

The video continued.

Thomas placed documents on the table.

“The material substitution will remain hidden until after the review.”

A voice asked:

“And Caldwell?”

The room became quiet.

Then Thomas answered.

“He trusts me.”

Nathan felt the words hit harder than any accusation.

Because Thomas had not just betrayed his company.

He had used their friendship.

The video continued.

“He thinks he built this company alone.”

Thomas smiled.

“He doesn’t understand that every empire has people behind the curtain.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Claire watched him carefully.

“Are you okay?”

Nathan opened his eyes.

“No.”

The honesty surprised her.

“I spent twelve years trusting that man.”

Claire lowered her gaze.

Nathan looked back at the screen.

“Continue.”

The next part of the recording was worse.

The group discussed the final inspection.

They knew about the material changes.

They knew about the risks.

And they knew people could get hurt.

But they continued anyway.

Because money mattered more.

Then the video reached the final minute.

Thomas looked directly toward the camera.

Nathan froze.

“Wait.”

Claire looked confused.

“What?”

Nathan moved closer.

“He knows.”

The recording showed Thomas turning toward the hidden camera.

Not accidentally.

Directly.

He smiled.

“If Nathan ever sees this…”

The room became silent.

Thomas continued.

“Then I guess Martin finally found someone who believed him.”

Nathan stared.

Thomas’s face filled the screen.

“You were always good at finding problems, Nathan.”

A pause.

“But you were never good at seeing people.”

The video ended.

No explanation.

No warning.

Just a black screen.

Claire whispered.

“He knew Martin was recording.”

Nathan nodded.

“He wanted me to find this.”

“Why?”

Nathan looked at the screen.

“Because this wasn’t meant to hide the truth.”

He stood.

“It was meant to send a message.”

A message.

Not to him.

To someone else.

Someone watching.

Someone controlling the entire operation.

Nathan walked toward the window.

Outside, Meridian One towered above the city.

A symbol of ambition.

A symbol of power.

But now Nathan saw something different.

A trap.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Thomas.”

Silence.

Then:

“You finally watched it.”

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Martin recorded everything.”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

Another silence.

Then Thomas laughed softly.

“That’s the question you should have asked first.”

Nathan gripped the phone.

“What did you do to him?”

Thomas ignored the question.

“Do you know what your biggest mistake was, Nathan?”

Nathan said nothing.

“You believed this company belonged to you.”

Nathan looked at Claire.

Then back at the window.

“It does.”

“No.”

Thomas’s voice became colder.

“It belongs to everyone who sacrificed for it.”

“You mean everyone you paid?”

A pause.

Then:

“Careful.”

Nathan smiled slightly.

For the first time, Thomas sounded uncomfortable.

“You spent your entire life building walls around yourself.”

Thomas continued.

“You thought money protected you.”

Nathan looked at the flash drive.

“But you forgot something.”

“What?”

Thomas answered:

“People who build towers know exactly where they collapse.”

The call ended.

Nathan immediately looked at Claire.

“We need to find Martin.”

Claire nodded.

“But how?”

Nathan looked at the video file.

At Thomas.

At the hidden camera.

Then he noticed something.

A reflection.

In the corner of the recording.

A person standing behind Thomas.

Nathan paused the video.

Zoomed in.

Claire moved closer.

“That’s…”

Nathan stared.

A man.

Partially hidden.

But recognizable.

“Who is he?”

Nathan enlarged the image.

The answer appeared.

A name.

A person Nathan thought had nothing to do with Meridian One.

A former business partner.

Someone who had disappeared from the construction world five years earlier.

Someone who had publicly promised revenge against Nathan Caldwell.

Claire looked at him.

“You know him.”

Nathan nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

Nathan looked at the tower outside.

Then at the frozen image.

His voice became quiet.

“Someone who has been waiting years to destroy me.”

The screen suddenly changed.

A new file appeared.

One they had not seen before.

A video uploaded seconds earlier.

Title:

MARTIN KEENE - LAST MESSAGE

Nathan clicked.

The screen went black.

Then Martin appeared.

His face was bruised.

His voice was weak.

But he was alive.

“If Nathan Caldwell is watching this…”

Martin looked directly into the camera.

“Then they know we found the truth.”

Nathan and Claire froze.

Martin continued:

“But there is something you need to know.”

A pause.

“Meridian One was never the real target.”

The video stopped.

May you like

Only one sentence remained on the screen.

THE REAL TARGET WAS YOU, NATHAN.
