Chapter 9 - Rose

Eleanor sat without being asked.

Nobody spoke.

Brandon stared at the beneficiary record.

"Who is Rose?"

Eleanor's silence was answer enough.

Daniel's face hardened.

"Another child?"

"No."

"Then who?"

She looked toward Charles.

He became pale.

"Don't."

Eleanor whispered, "She's Rebecca's."

The room changed.

Brandon shook his head.

"What?"

Charles sat.

Rebecca was forty-two.

Rose was twenty-nine.

That meant Rebecca would have been thirteen.

I felt cold before anyone explained.

Daniel whispered, "Rebecca had a baby at thirteen?"

Eleanor snapped, "Not like that."

"Then explain."

Eleanor covered her face.

For once, she seemed unable to control the room.

Charles stood.

"What happened to our daughter?"

"She was fourteen."

"Thirteen according to this."

"The dates—"

"Stop changing dates!"

His voice thundered.

Everyone froze.

He had never shouted before.

Eleanor looked frightened.

Charles lowered his voice.

"What happened?"

She swallowed.

"Rebecca was fourteen when she became pregnant."

Charles backed away.

"I didn't know."

"No."

"How?"

Eleanor began crying.

Real tears.

Not enough to erase anything.

But real.

"She was assaulted."

Silence.

The words seemed to remove oxygen from the room.

Charles whispered, "By who?"

Eleanor shook her head.

"She wouldn't say."

"And you didn't tell me?"

"She begged me not to."

"So you handled it alone?"

"I thought I was protecting her."

"Where is the baby?"

Eleanor whispered, "Adopted."

Daniel turned away.

Brandon looked sick.

I thought of Rebecca upstairs at my house with our children.

Did she remember?

Of course she remembered.

Did she know Rose existed?

Maybe not.

Eleanor continued.

"My parents had handled Daniel's adoption. I knew who to contact."

Daniel turned back sharply.

"You used the same people?"

"Yes."

"After what they did to you?"

"I didn't know what else to do."

Charles looked devastated.

"You could have told me."

"I was afraid you'd blame her."

"Why would I blame her?"

"I didn't know."

"That's your excuse for everything."

She flinched.

Brandon asked, "Why is Rose in Henry's trust?"

Eleanor looked at him.

"Because Henry found out."

"How?"

"Howard."

Of course.

The accountant who seemed to know everything.

"Henry confronted me. He said Rose was a descendant whether Rebecca raised her or not."

Martin nodded.

"So he added her."

"I begged him not to tell Charles."

Charles closed his eyes.

"My father knew."

"Yes."

"And I didn't."

"Yes."

He looked broken.

Daniel spoke.

"Does Rebecca know where Rose is?"

Eleanor shook her head.

"She asked once when she was eighteen."

"What did you tell her?"

"That the records were sealed."

"True?"

"Partly."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

There was always a partly.

Brandon took the document.

"Does Rose know who she is?"

"I don't know."

Martin pointed to recent account activity.

"Someone does."

A distribution had been made to Rose eighteen months earlier.

Not by Eleanor.

By the trust administrator.

Direct deposit.

Her beneficiary status had apparently been independently restored.

Eleanor stared.

"That's impossible."

Martin checked.

"Someone submitted identification."

"Who?"

"The beneficiary."

Daniel looked at him.

"Rose found the trust."

"Apparently."

Charles whispered, "Then she knows."

Martin searched the contact record.

An email address existed.

No phone number.

No physical address accessible without authorization.

Brandon said, "Contact her."

Martin hesitated.

"This is sensitive."

"Tell her the family is trying to understand what happened."

Charles spoke quietly.

"Tell her her grandfather wants to meet her."

Martin sent the email.

Then we faced the harder question.

Rebecca.

We couldn't hide this.

Not after condemning Eleanor for hiding everything else.

I called her.

"Can you come over?"

She heard something in my voice.

"Is Lily okay?"

"Yes."

"The kids?"

"Fine."

"What happened?"

I closed my eyes.

"Rebecca, we found something about you."

Silence.

Then her voice changed.

"Rose."

Everyone in the room froze.

"You know?"

Rebecca exhaled.

"I've always known her name."

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Charles grabbed the back of a chair.

Rebecca continued.

"Mom told me she died."

Eleanor began crying harder.

"No."

Charles whispered, "Oh God."

I said gently, "Rebecca, Rose is alive."

The phone went completely silent.

Then I heard something fall.

"Rebecca?"

A broken breath.

"Say that again."

"She's alive."

"No."

"She is."

"No."

"Rebecca—"

"My mother told me she died three days after the adoption."

Eleanor whispered, "I was trying to help her move on."

Brandon stared at her in horror.

I turned away because I could not bear to look at Eleanor while Rebecca was speaking.

"Grace."

"I'm here."

"Where is she?"

"We don't know yet."

"Does she know about me?"

"We don't know."

"I need to come."

"Yes."

Twenty minutes later Rebecca arrived.

Her eyes were red.

She walked past everyone.

Straight to Eleanor.

"You told me she died."

Eleanor stood.

"Rebecca."

"You let me grieve my living daughter."

"I thought—"

"No."

Rebecca's voice was terrifyingly calm.

"You don't get to explain first."

Eleanor fell silent.

"I was fourteen."

"I know."

"I woke up every night for months asking if she suffered."

Tears ran down her face.

"You told me she had trouble breathing."

Eleanor cried.

"Please."

"You invented details?"

"I wanted closure."

Rebecca laughed.

It sounded painful.

"Closure?"

She stepped backward.

"You buried my daughter while she was alive."

Charles cried openly now.

Rebecca looked at him.

"Dad."

He shook his head.

"I didn't know."

"I know."

She hugged him.

They both cried.

Daniel turned away to give them privacy.

Brandon stared at the floor.

I thought of Lily again.

One cruel gift had exposed a family structure built on secrecy.

But perhaps that was the difference this time.

Nobody would help hide it.

Martin's laptop chimed.

An email response.

Everyone stopped.

He looked at the screen.

"It's from Rose."

Rebecca released Charles.

Her face went white.

"What did she say?"

Martin hesitated.

"She wants proof."

"Of what?"

"That we're really family."

Rebecca wiped her face.

"Send everything."

Martin replied with redacted trust documentation.

Rose responded within minutes.

One sentence.

I already know who my mother is.

Rebecca sat down.

Another message came.

She told me she died too.

Eleanor gasped.

Rebecca whispered, "What?"

A third message arrived.

But I found her three years ago.

Rebecca stood.

"She found me?"

Martin read the next line.

She doesn't know I know.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Another message.

I wasn't ready.

Then the final message appeared.

I think I am now.

Beneath it was an address.

A café forty minutes away.

Tomorrow.

11:00 a.m.

Rebecca stared at the screen as if it were a doorway.

Then another email arrived.

Only one person may come.

Rebecca whispered, "Me."

Martin opened the message.

The final line made him frown.

May you like

Not Eleanor.

And if Eleanor follows you, I leave.
