Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Hid Henry’s Secret

The front door opened slowly.

Neither Emily nor I moved.

The basement suddenly felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

I held the memory card tightly in my hand.

Emily looked at me.

"Mom..."

I raised one finger.

Silence.

We listened.

A step.

Then another.

Someone was walking through my house.

Not rushing.

Not hiding.

Walking like they belonged there.

Like they had every right to enter.

My heart pounded.

Because I knew that feeling.

I had seen it before.

It was the same way Linda walked into my dining room on Christmas Eve.

The same confidence.

The same certainty.

The same belief that nothing could stop her.

I slowly reached for my phone.

Emily grabbed my arm.

"Don't."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

Her face was pale.

"Because if it's her, she knows exactly what she's doing."

I understood.

Linda was not someone who made careless mistakes.

She planned.

She waited.

She watched.

Then a voice came from upstairs.

"Margaret?"

Linda.

My fingers tightened.

She knew I was home.

She knew I was here.

"Come upstairs," Linda called.

Emily looked at me in disbelief.

"She sounds calm."

I whispered:

"That's what scares me."

We climbed the stairs slowly.

When we reached the living room, Linda was standing near the fireplace.

She was wearing the same elegant coat she had worn two nights earlier.

The same woman who had sat in my chair.

The same woman who had taken my Christmas dinner.

But now she looked different.

Not confident.

Careful.

Like she was finally aware that I was no longer the person she thought I was.

"Where is Ryan?" Emily asked.

Linda looked at her.

"Your husband made a mistake."

My eyes narrowed.

"A mistake?"

Linda turned toward me.

"Yes."

"You mean breaking into my home?"

Her expression barely changed.

"You found the documents."

Not a question.

A statement.

Emily stepped forward.

"You knew."

Linda looked at her.

"Emily."

Her voice softened.

Almost like a mother.

"You have always been too emotional."

Emily froze.

I saw the pain in her face.

Because Linda wasn't just attacking her.

She was reminding her of every time she had been made to feel small.

I stepped between them.

"Enough."

Linda looked at me.

For the first time, she seemed surprised.

"You've changed."

I almost laughed.

"No."

I shook my head.

"I just stopped letting people treat my kindness like permission."

The room went quiet.

Linda looked toward the basement door.

"You found Henry's box."

I stared at her.

"You knew about it."

She didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

"You knew about my husband's secret."

Linda sighed.

"Henry was always difficult."

My jaw tightened.

"Don't talk about him like that."

"He was suspicious."

"He was smart."

She smiled slightly.

"That was his problem."

Emily looked confused.

"What are you talking about?"

Linda looked at her.

Then at me.

"You both deserve the truth."

I didn't trust those words.

People who hid things for years rarely gave the truth freely.

"Then tell us."

Linda walked toward the dining table.

She touched the back of one of the chairs.

Not my chair.

But close enough.

"Thirty-five years ago, before Ryan was even married, Henry discovered something."

I stayed silent.

"What?"

Linda looked at me.

"A financial scheme."

The words meant nothing at first.

Then everything.

"Your husband found out someone was using properties in this neighborhood to hide money."

Emily frowned.

"And?"

"And Henry kept records."

I looked at the memory card in my hand.

"The recordings."

Linda nodded.

"He documented everything."

"Why didn't he tell me?"

Her expression changed.

"Because he was afraid."

That answer hurt.

Not because I believed Linda.

Because part of me wondered if it was true.

"Afraid of what?"

Linda looked toward the window.

"Of what would happen if the wrong people found out."

Emily stepped closer.

"Who were the wrong people?"

Linda didn't answer immediately.

Then she said:

"My son."

The room froze.

Ryan.

I stared at her.

"You expect me to believe you are protecting me from Ryan?"

Linda gave a small, bitter smile.

"No."

She looked directly at me.

"I'm protecting myself."

There it was.

The honesty I never expected.

"You were involved."

Linda looked away.

"Yes."

Emily gasped.

"Mom?"

She wasn't talking to me.

She was talking to Linda.

"You knew?"

Linda sighed.

"I knew enough."

I felt sick.

All these years.

All these conversations.

All those holidays.

And people had been moving pieces around me.

Like I wasn't even part of my own life.

"Why now?" I asked.

Linda looked at the memory card.

"Because Ryan found out what Henry left behind."

I looked down at it.

"What's on this?"

She became serious.

"You need to see it."

I didn't move.

"Why should I trust you?"

"You shouldn't."

That answer surprised me.

Linda continued.

"But you should know one thing."

She stepped closer.

"Ryan is not trying to take your house."

Emily looked confused.

"Then what is he trying to take?"

Linda looked at me.

"The evidence."

My stomach dropped.

The house.

The papers.

The basement.

It was never about the property.

It was about what Henry discovered.

I looked at the memory card.

"Why did Henry hide it?"

Linda's expression softened.

"Because he knew you would never run."

I felt tears forming.

"That doesn't answer my question."

Linda looked toward the hallway.

"Because he knew someone close to you would eventually betray you."

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

Emily looked down.

I saw the guilt return.

But before I could speak, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Ryan.

I opened it.

One sentence.

Ask Linda why Henry trusted her before he trusted you.

I felt my blood turn cold.

Linda saw the message.

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"He knows."

Emily looked at her.

"Knows what?"

Linda didn't answer.

She walked toward the window.

Then she whispered:

"He knows I have the second recording."

My eyes widened.

"Second recording?"

Linda turned around.

"The one Henry made after he discovered who was really behind everything."

The room went silent.

"Where is it?"

Linda looked at me.

Then at Emily.

Then toward the basement.

"I hid it somewhere Ryan would never think to look."

I took a step forward.

"Where?"

Linda opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, every light in the house went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Emily grabbed my hand.

A second later, my phone lit up.

One new message.

Unknown number.

May you like

Only four words.

The basement door is open.
