Chapter 6 - The Last Thing Michael Hid

Adrian read the note twice.
Marco swore.
Rachel looked horrified.
“What key?”
Adrian closed his fist around the paper.
“Not your concern.”
“A child has been abducted from state custody. Everything is my concern.”
Adrian looked at her.
She did not back down.
Good.
He needed people who did not.
“The key opened a storage unit containing evidence against Vanessa and Graham Vale.”
Rachel’s face changed.
“You still have it?”
“Yes.”
“What do they think is in there?”
“Something we haven’t found.”
Leo was inside, screaming for Mia.
Adrian went to him.
The boy had tried to climb from his wheelchair.
Two staff members were stopping him.
“Let me go!”
“Leo.”
He froze.
Adrian crouched.
“I’m getting her.”
“It’s my fault.”
“No.”
“I told you about the man.”
“No.”
“I should have watched her.”
“You are six.”
Leo sobbed.
“She’s three!”
“And you are six.”
“I’m her big brother!”
“You are her brother. Not her father. Not her bodyguard.”
Leo cried harder.
Adrian put both hands around his face.
“Listen to me.”
The boy looked at him.
“This is not your fault.”
“Mom took her?”
“I don’t know.”
“Yes, you do.”
Adrian hesitated.
Then nodded.
“I think so.”
Leo grabbed his wrists.
“Bring her back.”
“I will.”
“Promise?”
Adrian almost said yes.
Then stopped.
He had learned something about promises.
“I will do everything I can.”
Leo shook his head.
“That’s not enough.”
Adrian’s eyes burned.
“No,” he said. “It isn’t.”
Police established a command center.
Detectives wanted Adrian uninvolved.
That lasted seven minutes.
Then they discovered he had the complete financial files.
They changed their minds.
The note demanded the key.
But Unit 214 had already been searched.
So what had everyone missed?
Adrian returned to the storage facility with detectives.
The burned rows smelled of wet ash.
Unit 214 was blackened around the edges.
Inside, investigators had removed most boxes.
Adrian stood in the empty space.
Michael had hidden something.
Something Vanessa still needed.
He looked at the walls.
Floor.
Ceiling.
Nothing.
Then he remembered Michael’s video.
“The proof is in a storage unit.”
Not boxes.
Not files.
In the unit.
Adrian crouched.
The concrete floor contained a metal drainage cover.
He lifted it.
Beneath was a waterproof tube.
Inside:
A second flash drive.
Marco stared.
“Your brother was paranoid.”
“He had good reason.”
The drive contained final evidence.
Video.
A parking garage.
Michael arguing with Graham Vale.
Vanessa stood beside him.
Audio clear.
Michael: “Stay away from my children.”
Vale: “Then stop digging.”
Vanessa: “Michael, please.”
Michael: “You’re helping him.”
Vanessa: “I’m protecting our future.”
Michael: “By stealing?”
Vale stepped closer.
“You have twenty-four hours.”
Michael: “Or what?”
Vale smiled.
“Ask your brother how expensive accidents can be.”
The recording ended.
Enough to establish threats.
Not murder.
Another file opened.
Michael speaking directly to camera.
“If something happens, the original accounting ledger is not here.”
Adrian muttered, “Michael.”
The video continued.
“I know Adrian will find this. And I know he’ll be furious.”
Correct.
“The ledger is inside the only thing Vanessa will never destroy.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“My wedding ring.”
Adrian frowned.
Michael had been buried with his ring.
Except Vanessa now wore it around her neck.
The ring Adrian had seen in court.
It was not sentiment.
It was evidence.
A micro-storage chip had been hidden inside.
Vanessa had been carrying it unknowingly.
Or perhaps she had discovered it.
And now she wanted the key because she assumed the key opened something containing proof.
She did not know Adrian had already found the second drive.
Maybe Mia was leverage for evidence Vanessa did not understand.
Police traced a phone call.
An abandoned warehouse east of Austin.
Adrian insisted on going.
Detective Reed refused.
Then Leo said something that changed everything.
“Mia hides when she’s scared.”
Rachel leaned toward him.
“Where?”
“Small places.”
“What kind?”
“Closets. Cabinets. Under beds.”
Adrian remembered the warehouse layout.
Old refrigerated storage rooms.
Small steel compartments.
If Mia escaped whoever held her, she might hide.
Police entered first.
Adrian waited outside.
Longest thirteen minutes of his life.
Then shots sounded.
He moved.
Reed tried to stop him.
Adrian ignored him.
Inside, officers had detained two men.
Graham Vale was not there.
Neither was Vanessa.
A child’s cry came from behind a metal door.
Adrian ran.
“Mia!”
“Uncle Ad!”
He opened it.
Mia sat beneath a shelf.
Alive.
Terrified.
No visible serious injuries.
Adrian dropped to his knees.
She launched herself into his arms.
“You came.”
“Yes.”
“I knew.”
He held her tighter.
She whispered, “Mommy said you wouldn’t.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Mommy is wrong about a lot.”
Police searched the warehouse.
Vanessa had fled minutes earlier.
Vale too.
But they had left behind phones.
Documents.
And Michael’s wedding ring.
Vanessa’s necklace lay on the floor.
Adrian picked up the ring using gloves.
The inside band had been altered.
A tiny compartment.
Michael had been right.
The ledger was there.
By morning, prosecutors had enough.
Money laundering.
Fraud.
Child abuse.
Kidnapping conspiracy.
Obstruction.
And evidence supporting murder charges in Michael’s death.
All they needed was Vanessa and Vale.
Mia returned to Leo.
He cried when he saw her.
She crawled into his bed.
“You didn’t watch me.”
Leo sobbed.
“I’m sorry.”
Mia frowned.
“I got snack.”
She held up crackers.
Leo laughed through tears.
Adrian stood in the doorway.
Rachel joined him.
“The judge is reconsidering placement.”
“When?”
“Today.”
“With me?”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What changed?”
She almost smiled.
“You ran into an active police operation to find a three-year-old.”
“That sounds like a reason to deny me.”
“Probably.”
He smiled.
Then Marco approached.
His expression erased it.
“What?”
“Vanessa called.”
Adrian turned.
“To who?”
“You.”
“My phone didn’t ring.”
“Not your current phone.”
Marco held out an old device.
Michael’s recovered backup phone.
The screen showed one missed call.
And one voicemail.
Adrian played it.
Vanessa was crying.
“Adrian, Graham is going to kill me.”
A pause.
“He killed Michael.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
Vanessa continued.
“And I know where he’s going next.”
Another pause.
Then she whispered two words.
May you like
“Your house.”
The estate security alarm began ringing on Adrian’s phone.
