Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The closet door opened another inch.
Nobody moved.
Not me.
Not my men.
Not even Victor.
That was the part that bothered me the most.
Victor Hale was a man who had survived things that killed stronger people.
He had walked away from wars.
He had disappeared from enemies who wanted him erased.
But now he stood frozen.
Afraid of whoever was hiding inside that closet.
"Alessandro..."
The voice came again.
Older.
Weaker.
But impossible to forget.
I stepped forward.
My hand remained near my weapon.
"Come out."
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a hand appeared.
A woman's hand.
Thin.
Shaking.
Holding onto the edge of the closet door.
Leo gasped.
"Mom?"
The woman slowly stepped into the room.
And everything I thought I knew collapsed.
Because I knew her.
Not personally.
But from the photographs.
From my father's old files.
From a name I had heard only once, years ago.
A name people stopped mentioning after my father died.
Elena Varela.
Leo's mother.
The woman everyone believed had disappeared.
The woman Victor said they were searching for.
The woman standing in front of me alive.
I stared at her.
She looked exhausted.
Her hair was messy.
Her clothes were worn.
There was a small cut near her forehead.
But she was alive.
"You're dead," I said.
The words came out before I could stop them.
Her eyes met mine.
"I know."
Nobody spoke.
The room felt frozen.
Leo ran forward.
He grabbed her.
She dropped to her knees and held him tightly.
For the first time since I met that boy, he looked like a child.
Not a survivor.
Not someone carrying secrets.
Just a son holding his mother.
I watched them.
And something inside me shifted.
Because I understood something.
Whatever happened here was bigger than money.
Bigger than power.
Someone had spent years trying to erase this family.
And they almost succeeded.
Victor finally moved.
"You weren't supposed to be here."
Elena looked at him.
"I had nowhere else to go."
Victor's face hardened.
"You knew he would find you."
She looked at me.
"Yes."
I stepped closer.
"Start explaining."
Elena didn't answer.
She kept one hand on Leo's shoulder.
"I knew your father."
"I know."
"No."
Her voice became serious.
"You don't."
I hated those words.
Because too many people had said them to me over the years.
You don't know the truth.
You don't understand.
You weren't ready.
Everyone always believed Alessandro Moretti was powerful.
But power meant nothing when everyone around you knew something you didn't.
"What did my father have to do with Leo?"
Elena looked at Victor.
Then back at me.
"He saved him."
I looked at Leo.
"Why?"
"Because Leo was the only thing that could destroy them."
The answer made no sense.
A child.
A seven-year-old boy.
How could a child destroy anyone?
"Who are they?"
Elena looked toward the windows.
Like she expected someone to be watching.
"The people who killed your father."
I felt my expression change.
"My father was killed by Thomas Varela."
Victor interrupted.
"No."
I turned toward him.
"What?"
Victor looked at Elena.
Then at me.
"Thomas didn't kill your father."
The room went silent.
"Then who did?"
Neither of them answered.
That was when I knew.
The truth was worse than the lie.
Because people could lie about simple things.
They stayed silent when the truth could destroy them.
I walked toward the table.
I picked up the documents again.
The hospital records.
The birth certificate.
The photographs.
"You hid a child from me."
Elena lowered her eyes.
"I protected him."
"From me?"
"No."
She looked directly at me.
"From your enemies."
I stared at her.
"Then why didn't my father tell me?"
Her eyes became wet.
"Because he tried."
That stopped me.
"What?"
Elena walked toward the table.
She reached into her coat pocket.
And pulled out something small.
An old key.
Black metal.
With a number engraved on it.
She placed it beside the documents.
"Your father left this for you."
I didn't touch it.
"Why didn't I get it?"
"Because the person who was supposed to give it to you betrayed him."
A cold silence filled the room.
"Who?"
Elena looked at Victor.
Victor didn't look away.
For the first time, I saw guilt on his face.
Not fear.
Not regret.
Guilt.
"Victor."
The old man closed his eyes.
"I made a mistake."
Daniel immediately moved.
My men knew what that meant.
A mistake from someone close to my family could be more dangerous than an enemy.
"What mistake?"
Victor looked at me.
"I trusted the wrong person."
"Who?"
Before Victor could answer, the lights went out.
The entire house fell into darkness.
Leo grabbed his mother's hand.
My men drew their weapons.
I listened.
Nothing.
No footsteps.
No voices.
Just silence.
Then my phone vibrated.
One message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A photograph appeared.
My father.
Standing outside this exact house.
Holding Leo as a baby.
But that wasn't what made me freeze.
It was the person standing beside him.
A person I knew.
A person who had been with me for years.
The message below the picture was short.
"Ask your most loyal man why he helped hide the boy."
I looked up slowly.
Everyone in the room was watching me.
Victor.
Elena.
Leo.
My men.
And one person in particular.
Someone who had followed me for years.
Someone I had trusted with my life.
I turned toward the doorway.
"Marco."
The room went silent.
Because Marco was no longer there.
May you like
His weapon was missing.
And the front door was already open.
