Chapter 6 - The Sister in the Shadows

Sofia Vale was forty-one years old.
Eight years older than Adrian.
Three years younger than Julian.
And according to every official record Adrian had ever seen, she had never existed.
Julian told the story during the drive.
Their mother had been nineteen when Sofia was born.
Thomas was twenty-three.
They were not married.
Thomas’s father considered the pregnancy a scandal and forced the baby into a private adoption.
Years later, after Thomas controlled the family, he secretly found Sofia.
“She came back when she was sixteen,” Julian said.
“Why don't I remember her?”
“You were six.”
“I remember being six.”
“She didn't live with us.”
“Why?”
Julian stared through the windshield.
“Because Dad didn't trust what she had become.”
Adrian looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
“Smart. Angry. Obsessed with everything she believed had been stolen from her.”
“The family?”
“The name. The money. Us.”
“And Mother?”
“Hated herself for agreeing to the adoption.”
Adrian thought of his mother.
Elegant.
Quiet.
Often sad in ways he had never understood.
“She kept seeing Sofia?”
“Yes.”
“Even after Dad stopped?”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at Julian.
“You knew all of this.”
“I was seventeen.”
“You still knew.”
“I thought she left the country.”
“She didn't.”
“No.”
Sofia’s address led to a mansion outside Greenwich.
Not hidden.
Not modest.
A property worth at least thirty million dollars.
Adrian almost admired the audacity.
Marcus positioned teams outside.
Thomas, pale but mobile, insisted on coming.
Grace stayed with Mia at the secure house.
Before Adrian left, Mia had handed him her drawing.
“For luck.”
He folded it into his coat pocket.
Now Thomas stood beside him at Sofia's front entrance.
“What are you going to say to her?” Adrian asked.
Thomas looked old.
“I'm sorry.”
“That usually fixes organized crime.”
Thomas almost smiled.
The door opened before they knocked.
Sofia stood there.
Tall.
Dark hair streaked with silver.
Sharp green eyes.
She looked more like Thomas than either son did.
“Adrian.”
He studied her.
“Sofia.”
She smiled.
“You have Mother’s eyes.”
“Apparently I have a sister.”
“You sound disappointed.”
“I've had a complicated week.”
She looked at Julian.
“The ghost.”
“Hello, Sofia.”
Then Thomas.
Her expression hardened.
“Father.”
“Sofia.”
She stepped aside.
“Come in.”
Adrian stayed outside.
“Where's Victor?”
Her eyebrow rose.
“Do you think I keep him in the foyer?”
“Do you?”
She laughed.
“Come inside.”
The mansion contained no visible guards.
That worried Marcus.
Sofia led them to a library.
On one wall hung photographs.
Their mother.
Thomas.
Julian as a boy.
Adrian at graduation.
Images taken from a distance.
Adrian's stomach tightened.
“You've been watching us.”
“For years.”
“Why?”
“Because family is interesting when it doesn't know you're family.”
Thomas spoke.
“You funded Victor.”
Sofia poured tea.
“I funded many people.”
“Children were trafficked.”
Sofia’s hand paused.
“I know.”
“And you continued.”
“No.”
Adrian watched her carefully.
She set the pot down.
“Victor took what I built and changed it.”
“What did you build?”
“A private intelligence network.”
Julian scoffed.
“With traffickers?”
“With informants. Customs officials. Police officers. Judges.”
Sofia looked at Thomas.
“People Father couldn't reach because everyone knew his name.”
Thomas whispered, “You built the corruption.”
“I bought corrupt people who were already for sale.”
“And Victor used them to move human beings.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you stop him?”
“I tried.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“People keep telling me they tried.”
Sofia met his gaze.
“And people keep underestimating Victor.”
She opened a drawer.
Removed a phone.
Played a video.
Elena Serrano sat in a room.
Alive.
Terrified.
Victor stood behind her with a gun.
“Father,” Elena said into the camera, “please.”
Victor smiled.
Then the video ended.
Adrian frowned.
“Elena was working against him?”
“For the last six months.”
Thomas stared.
Sofia continued.
“Elena agreed to marry you because she believed being inside the Vale estate would let her steal the ledger.”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“She kidnapped Mia.”
“Yes.”
“That's not the behavior of an ally.”
“No.”
Sofia looked at him.
“Elena panicked. Victor discovered she was helping me and ordered her to bring Mia.”
“So she obeyed.”
“To protect her younger brother.”
Adrian was tired of hostages.
Tired of families using love as leverage.
“Where's Victor now?”
Sofia looked toward Thomas.
“He has the final archive.”
Thomas said, “Impossible.”
“He reconstructed most of Daniel’s access key.”
“Most?”
“He needs Mia.”
Adrian went still.
Sofia nodded.
“Not to hurt her. For a biometric scan.”
“That distinction won't save him.”
“No.”
Sofia seemed to agree.
“He'll come for her before dawn.”
Adrian's phone rang.
Grace.
He answered immediately.
“Adrian.”
Her voice sounded wrong.
“What happened?”
“There’s someone outside.”
“Marcus's team?”
“No.”
He turned toward Marcus.
“Security house breach.”
Marcus was already moving.
Grace whispered, “The lights just went out.”
Adrian felt ice enter his veins.
“Take Mia to the panic room.”
“I am.”
A crash sounded through the phone.
Mia screamed.
Adrian ran for the door.
“Grace!”
“I’m here.”
Gunshots.
Then Grace shouted.
“Get away from her!”
The line disconnected.
Adrian called back.
Nothing.
Marcus contacted the safe-house team.
No response.
Sofia stood in the hallway.
“You're too late.”
Adrian turned on her.
“If you knew—”
“I knew Victor would try. I didn't know where you hid them.”
Thomas grabbed Adrian’s arm.
“Go.”
The drive took sixteen minutes.
It felt like sixteen years.
The front gate was open.
Two guards unconscious.
One wounded.
Marcus entered first.
Adrian followed.
Broken glass.
Blood.
Overturned furniture.
“Mia!”
No answer.
They reached the panic room.
Door open.
Empty.
Adrian's stomach dropped.
Then a noise came from the laundry closet.
Marcus opened it.
Grace emerged holding Mia.
Both alive.
Adrian closed his eyes once.
Grace looked at him.
“They took Rachel.”
Adrian’s relief vanished.
“Who?”
“One man.”
“Victor?”
“No.”
She was shaking.
“He said Rachel was the wrong sister.”
Adrian understood.
Victor had meant to take Grace.
He had grabbed Rachel in darkness.
Mia hugged Adrian’s leg suddenly.
He looked down.
“They want my finger,” she whispered.
Adrian crouched.
“What?”
“The man said they need my finger.”
Grace covered her mouth.
Biometric scan.
Sofia had been right.
Marcus searched the property.
On the kitchen table he found a phone.
Video call waiting.
Adrian accepted.
Victor appeared.
Rachel sat beside him.
This time she was not bound.
She held a gun.
Pointed at Victor.
Adrian blinked.
Victor smiled.
“You look confused.”
Rachel's hand trembled.
“I'm sorry, Grace.”
Grace stepped toward the screen.
“Rachel?”
Tears filled Rachel’s eyes.
“I didn't have a choice.”
Victor leaned closer.
“Everyone has a choice.”
He turned the camera.
Elena sat across the room.
Beside her was a teenage boy.
Her brother.
Victor looked back.
“Bring Mia to Pier 7.”
Adrian’s face went cold.
“No.”
“Then Rachel shoots me.”
Adrian almost laughed.
“That sounds convenient.”
Victor smiled wider.
“And if I die, the heart monitor strapped to my chest triggers explosives beneath Elena and her brother.”
Rachel began crying.
Grace whispered, “No.”
Victor continued.
“Mia gives me the biometric scan. Everyone walks away.”
“You expect me to believe you?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Adrian was about to end the call.
Then Victor said, “Ask your sister why Daniel Holloway really died.”
Adrian looked toward Sofia.
She went still.
Grace stared.
“What?”
Victor laughed.
“Oh, Sofia never told you?”
Grace faced her.
“Tell me what?”
Sofia said nothing.
Victor answered for her.
“Daniel discovered Sofia was the one who recruited me.”
Grace's expression broke.
“And when Daniel threatened to expose the entire network…”
Victor paused.
Sofia closed her eyes.
Grace whispered, “What did you do?”
Victor smiled into the camera.
“Sofia gave the order that got your husband killed.”
Grace turned toward Sofia.
Sofia whispered, “It wasn’t supposed to happen that way.”
Grace slapped her.
Hard.
Nobody stopped her.
The phone chimed.
Victor sent coordinates.
Then one final message.
COME BEFORE 4:00 A.M.
Adrian looked at the clock.
3:16.
Mia took his hand.
“No more hiding.”
Adrian looked down.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I’m coming.”
Grace immediately said, “Absolutely not.”
Mia looked at her mother.
“If I don't, Aunt Rachel dies.”
Grace began crying.
Adrian crouched.
“You’re not going near Victor.”
“But—”
“We're going to make him think you are.”
Sofia looked toward him.
“What are you planning?”
Adrian stood.
For the first time all night, he smiled.
“I'm going to give Victor exactly what he thinks he wants.”
At 3:58 a.m., a black sedan rolled onto Pier 7.
Victor watched from the warehouse.
The rear door opened.
A small figure stepped out holding Grace’s hand.
Victor smiled.
Then the child lifted her face.
May you like
And Victor's smile vanished.
Because the little girl was not Mia.
