Chapter 6 - The Man Who Never Left

The footsteps stopped outside my office.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

The red emergency lights continued flashing across the executive floor, turning every face into a shadow.

Marcus stood beside the door.

His hand was still holding his phone.

Daniel’s warning echoed in my mind.

Run.

But there was nowhere to run.

Not anymore.

For twenty years, I had believed my greatest challenge was building a company.

I had fought competitors.

Market crashes.

Boardroom battles.

But I had never imagined the biggest threat would come from someone standing beside me every day.

Someone I called a friend.

The door handle moved.

Marcus looked at me.

"Behind me."

I almost laughed.

"You're telling me to hide in my own office?"

His eyes stayed serious.

"Yes."

The door opened.

Slowly.

But nobody entered.

A voice came from the hallway.

"Marcus."

My body froze.

Daniel.

My CFO.

The man who had been with Mercer Holdings longer than almost anyone alive.

The man who helped me make decisions.

The man who sat beside me after my father's funeral.

He was standing outside my office.

"Come out," Daniel said.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Marcus stepped toward the door.

"No."

A short silence.

Then Daniel sighed.

"You always were loyal to Thomas."

Marcus's face changed.

"Don't say his name."

Daniel laughed quietly.

A cold sound.

"You spent twenty years protecting a dead man's secrets."

I felt anger rise.

I walked toward the door.

Marcus grabbed my arm.

"Don't."

But I pulled away.

"Enough."

I opened the door.

Daniel stood alone in the hallway.

No security team.

No weapons.

Nothing.

Just a perfectly tailored suit and the same confident expression I had seen hundreds of times.

But now I saw something different.

The person behind it.

"Evan."

He looked almost disappointed.

"I hoped you wouldn't have to find out this way."

I stared at him.

"You knew."

Daniel didn't deny it.

"Yes."

The answer shocked me more than a lie would have.

"You knew about my father."

"Yes."

"You knew he was alive."

A pause.

Then:

"Yes."

Claire stepped beside me.

"You helped destroy him."

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time, his expression changed.

Recognition.

"You look like your father."

Claire's eyes filled with anger.

"You ruined his life."

Daniel looked away.

"No."

His voice became colder.

"Your father ruined his own life."

I stepped forward.

"Explain."

Daniel looked at me.

"Your father was a brilliant man. But he made one mistake."

"What?"

"He believed honesty was more powerful than control."

The words made my stomach tighten.

"You're saying he deserved this?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I'm saying he never understood the world he created."

I looked at Marcus.

Then Claire.

Then Daniel.

The entire foundation of my life was breaking apart.

"Why?"

The question came out quieter than I expected.

"Why fake my father's death?"

Daniel stared at me.

"Because your father was going to destroy everything."

"Everything?"

"The company."

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"You stole from me."

"No."

Daniel stepped closer.

"I protected the company."

"You moved forty million dollars."

"To protect it."

His answer was immediate.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I expect you to listen."

He looked toward the old photograph still displayed on the monitors.

"You think North Vale was created to steal from Mercer Holdings."

He shook his head.

"It was created because your father was about to lose control."

Claire stepped forward.

"My father was trying to expose corruption."

Daniel looked at her.

"Your father was trying to expose people who were trying to expose him."

The room went silent.

Nobody moved.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Your father wasn't the victim you think he was."

My jaw tightened.

"Careful."

"I'm telling you the truth."

"No."

I pointed toward the screen.

"The video showed you meeting him."

"Yes."

"You betrayed him."

Daniel's face became unreadable.

"No."

He looked at Marcus.

"Ask him."

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

I felt something sink in my chest.

"Marcus?"

He didn't answer.

"Tell me."

Marcus closed his eyes.

"I wasn't going to hide it forever."

"Hide what?"

He looked at me.

"Your father wasn't killed."

I already knew that.

But the next words changed everything.

"He wasn't running from Daniel."

My heartbeat slowed.

"He was running from you."

The room went completely silent.

"What?"

Marcus looked devastated.

"Thomas discovered something about you."

I stared at him.

"About me?"

Daniel stepped back.

Like he already knew what was coming.

Marcus continued.

"When you were nineteen, before your father disappeared, you were involved in an accident."

I frowned.

"I remember."

"Do you?"

The question confused me.

"I was driving home."

Marcus nodded.

"That's what everyone told you."

My hands tightened.

"What actually happened?"

Marcus looked at Claire.

Then at Daniel.

Then finally at me.

"Your father found out someone had manipulated your memories."

The words sounded impossible.

"What are you saying?"

Marcus swallowed.

"That night was not an accident."

The room felt like it was closing around me.

"Someone wanted you to forget something."

"What?"

Marcus looked at the computer screen.

At the image of my father.

"Something you saw."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Something that happened before your father disappeared."

I tried to remember.

The accident.

The hospital.

The weeks afterward.

Everything was blurry.

Pieces missing.

Like pages torn from a book.

Daniel spoke quietly.

"Thomas spent years trying to protect you from the truth."

I looked at him.

"You?"

He nodded.

"Because he knew if you remembered, you would become a target."

Claire looked between us.

"Then why did he let Evan inherit the company?"

Daniel answered.

"Because he believed Evan would eventually discover everything."

A strange silence followed.

My father hadn't abandoned me.

He had hidden something from me.

To protect me.

But from what?

My phone vibrated.

A new message.

I opened it.

Unknown sender.

One sentence.

You are finally ready to remember.

Then another message appeared.

A location.

An old hospital.

The same hospital where my father supposedly died.

My hands went cold.

Claire saw the screen.

"Evan..."

Marcus looked terrified.

"No."

"What?"

He stepped closer.

"That place was destroyed years ago."

I stared at the location.

"It says it's still there."

Daniel's face changed.

For the first time, real fear appeared.

"That's impossible."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

He didn't answer.

Because the truth was already written on his face.

He knew exactly what was waiting there.

The office lights flickered.

Then every monitor displayed a live security feed.

A hospital hallway.

Old.

Empty.

Abandoned.

The camera moved slowly toward a closed door.

A nameplate appeared.

My heart stopped.

Because the name on that door was mine.

Evan Mercer — Patient Room 17.

Then the door opened from the inside.
