Chapter 7 - The Deal

Julian moved before Richard could react.

He knocked the gun sideways.

Ava ducked.

The shot struck the ceiling.

Security rushed in seconds later.

Richard was arrested.

But the damage had already been done.

The investigation revealed years of financial fraud.

West Briar wasn't being cleared for redevelopment.

Richard wanted the land for a private consortium.

He had falsified tenant records.

Deleted complaints.

Threatened residents.

And used Julian's company as a shield.

But one question remained.

Why had Julian's father hidden Ava?

The answer came from Thomas Monroe.

Ava's father finally told her everything.

He had promised Elena to protect her daughter.

He had accepted money only because Julian's father had begged him to keep Ava safe.

Thomas had raised her as his own.

He had never stopped loving her.

But he had also lived with guilt.

“I should have told you,” he whispered.

Ava sat beside him.

“You were trying to protect me.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was Mom.”

He nodded.

“I think she knew she'd never see you grow up.”

Ava cried.

Julian stood quietly by the window.

Thomas looked at him.

“Your father wasn't a good man.”

Julian didn't argue.

“But he tried to fix what he had broken.”

Julian looked down.

“That doesn't erase what he did.”

“No.”

Thomas shook his head.

“But sometimes people spend the rest of their lives paying for one mistake.”

Ava looked at Julian.

He met her eyes.

For the first time, she saw the loneliness behind his coldness.

His father had left him an empire.

And a mountain of secrets.

Julian stepped closer.

“I don't want to be him.”

Ava answered softly.

“Then don't.”

That night, Julian announced an internal investigation.

He froze the West Briar redevelopment.

He ordered every tenant record restored.

He also offered legal assistance to the residents.

But Ava refused special treatment.

“I want a job.”

Julian looked at her.

“You still want to work here?”

“Yes.”

“After everything?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because someone has to make sure people like Richard don't get to write the truth.”

Julian smiled.

A real smile.

Small.

But unmistakable.

Noah saw it from the doorway.

He nearly dropped his tablet.

Three weeks later, Ava began working at Crosswell.

She and Julian became closer.

Not quickly.

Not easily.

But honestly.

He learned to ask instead of command.

She learned that his silence didn't always mean anger.

And slowly, the CEO who hadn't smiled in seven years began smiling again.

Then one afternoon, Ava received an anonymous email.

There was no subject.

Only one sentence.

You found Richard. You haven't found the person who ordered him.

Attached was a photograph.

Julian was standing beside Ava outside Crosswell.

Someone had taken it from across the street.

May you like

And beneath the photograph was a message:

Your mother's story isn't finished.
