Chapter 6 - The Truth That Exposed Everyone

The message remained on the table.

Five words.

Simple.

Cold.

Terrifying.

He wants the person who saved him.

Marissa stared at the paper as if the letters might change if she looked long enough.

They didn’t.

The reality stayed the same.

Someone had tried to hurt Arthur Ward.

Someone inside his company had betrayed him.

And now that person knew about her.

She looked at Noah.

He was sitting quietly on the sofa, still holding his drawing notebook.

He was too young to understand the danger around him.

Too young to know that his mother’s kindness had brought them into a world where trust was rare and secrets were dangerous.

Marissa stood.

“I’m taking my son home.”

Arthur immediately looked at her.

“Mrs. Hale—”

“No.”

Her voice was not angry.

It was tired.

“I appreciate everything you’re trying to do.”

She looked around the luxurious office.

The security.

The cameras.

The powerful people making decisions around her.

“But this isn’t my world.”

Arthur watched her carefully.

“You think leaving makes you safer?”

Marissa hesitated.

Because she knew the answer.

No.

But admitting it was terrifying.

“I think my son deserves a normal life.”

Arthur’s expression softened.

“So does mine.”

The words stopped her.

For the first time, Arthur Ward didn’t look like a billionaire.

He looked like a father.

A father who understood fear.

A father who had spent years protecting his family.

“You believe I wanted this for you?” Arthur asked.

Marissa didn’t respond.

“I didn’t ask you to become part of this.”

His voice became quieter.

“You became part of it when you chose to save me.”

The truth hurt.

Because she knew he was right.

A knock suddenly interrupted them.

Everyone turned.

A security officer entered.

“Mr. Ward.”

Arthur looked at him.

“Yes?”

“We found something in the archive room.”

Elias immediately stepped forward.

“What?”

The officer handed him a small evidence bag.

Inside was a silver flash drive.

Marissa noticed Arthur’s expression change.

“What is it?”

Elias examined it carefully.

“A backup device.”

“From where?”

“The archive room.”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed.

“Victor left it?”

The officer nodded.

“Possibly.”

Elias looked at Arthur.

“He wanted us to find this.”

Marissa felt uneasy.

“Why would someone trying to hide evidence leave evidence behind?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

It was a trap.

Arthur looked at Elias.

“Can it be opened safely?”

“We’ll check.”

A security specialist arrived minutes later.

The flash drive was connected to a protected computer.

Everyone watched the screen.

Marissa stood near the back of the room with Noah beside her.

She felt like an outsider.

A person who had accidentally walked into a storm.

Then the screen changed.

A folder appeared.

One file.

No name.

No date.

Just one word.

Truth.

The security specialist opened it.

The first thing that appeared was a series of financial records.

Marissa didn’t understand most of it.

Numbers.

Accounts.

Contracts.

But the expressions around her told her everything.

Something was wrong.

Arthur stepped closer.

“What am I looking at?”

Elias moved through the documents.

“Transfers.”

Arthur frowned.

“From where?”

Elias looked at him.

“Your company.”

A silence filled the room.

“How much?”

Elias hesitated.

“Over fifty million dollars.”

Claire covered her mouth.

“No…”

Arthur’s face remained still.

But his eyes changed.

Betrayal.

Pain.

Anger.

“Who authorized them?”

Elias continued searching.

Then stopped.

Everyone noticed.

“Elias.”

He looked uncomfortable.

“Tell me.”

Elias turned the screen.

A name appeared.

Claire Ward.

The room went completely silent.

Marissa looked at Claire.

The woman’s face had lost all color.

Arthur stared at his wife.

Or rather…

The woman he had trusted.

“Claire?”

She looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“No, Arthur. I didn’t do this.”

Nobody moved.

Marissa felt trapped between two realities.

The evidence said one thing.

The woman’s face said another.

Elias quickly examined the records.

“Sir, these files could have been manipulated.”

Arthur looked at him.

“But?”

“But the authorization appears legitimate.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Arthur, listen to me.”

He didn’t answer.

“I would never steal from you.”

Her voice cracked.

“Never.”

Marissa watched carefully.

She had learned something about people.

Lies usually came with anger.

With excuses.

With attacks.

But Claire looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

Then Noah spoke.

Quietly.

“Mom.”

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed at the screen.

“There’s something wrong.”

Marissa immediately knelt beside him.

“What?”

He pointed at the documents.

“The letters.”

Nobody understood.

Noah looked embarrassed.

“My teacher says fake things don’t look exactly like real things.”

Marissa smiled gently.

“What do you mean?”

“The letters.”

He pointed again.

“They’re different.”

The security specialist leaned closer.

Everyone waited.

After several seconds, his expression changed.

“Interesting.”

Arthur looked at him.

“What?”

The specialist enlarged the document.

“The font spacing.”

Elias stepped closer.

“What about it?”

“These files were copied and recreated.”

He looked at Arthur.

“They are designed to look original.”

Claire closed her eyes.

A wave of relief crossed her face.

Arthur looked at Noah.

A small smile appeared.

“Your son has excellent observation skills.”

Noah shrugged.

“My mom says details matter.”

Marissa felt emotional.

Because even in a room full of powerful people, her little boy had noticed something they missed.

Then Elias found another file.

A hidden folder.

Buried deeper.

This time, the name was different.

Victor Lang.

Everyone became silent.

The specialist opened it.

Inside were recordings.

Emails.

Private conversations.

Evidence.

Real evidence.

The first video began.

Victor appeared on screen.

Sitting in a private office.

Talking to someone whose face was hidden.

“I need Arthur removed before the board meeting.”

Marissa felt cold.

The person on the screen continued.

“He trusts too many people.”

The hidden person asked something.

Victor smiled.

“That is exactly why this will work.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Another file opened.

This one showed financial transfers.

Money being moved.

Accounts created under fake names.

Companies connected to Victor.

Then the final file appeared.

A conversation.

Victor’s voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“I don’t need to kill him.”

Everyone froze.

“He has built an empire based on trust.”

Victor continued.

“All I have to do is destroy that trust.”

Arthur stared at the screen.

The betrayal was complete.

Not just an attack.

Not just money.

Victor wanted to destroy everything Arthur created.

His reputation.

His family.

His legacy.

Marissa looked at Arthur.

For the first time, she saw the pain behind his power.

Because losing money was one thing.

Losing trust was another.

Elias immediately called security.

“Find Victor Lang.”

But before anyone moved, every screen in the office suddenly turned black.

Then one message appeared.

Everyone froze.

A text appeared in white letters.

You were always predictable, Arthur.

A second line appeared.

You protected the witness.

Marissa felt her heart stop.

The final line appeared.

Now I know what matters to you.

Arthur immediately turned toward Marissa.

“Take her and Noah out.”

Elias moved.

But before they reached the door, the lights went off.

The room went dark.

Noah grabbed Marissa’s hand.

She pulled him close.

Security alarms began screaming.

Then, somewhere in the darkness…

A voice spoke.

Calm.

Confident.

Too close.

“Mrs. Hale.”

Marissa froze.

Because she recognized it.

The same voice.

The same man.

The stranger from the photograph.

Victor Lang.

“You saved Arthur Ward.”

A pause.

“And now…”

The lights flickered back on.

But Victor was nowhere to be seen.

May you like

Only his voice remained.

“You’re going to help me finish what I started.”
