Chapter 6 - The Person Behind The Voice

The hidden video played as I whispered: "That voice... I know that voice."

Emily looked at me with tears in her eyes.

Because she knew the truth was finally coming out.

The hospital room felt colder than before.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't even blink.

The voice coming from the phone wasn't unfamiliar.

That was the worst part.

I knew it.

I had heard it many times.

During family dinners.

During baby shopping.

During the moments when I thought I was surrounded by people who loved me.

Emily watched my face carefully.

"You recognized her."

I didn't answer.

I didn't need to.

My silence was enough.

The video continued playing.

Daniel's voice came first.

"She is getting closer to the truth."

Then the other voice replied.

"She won't remember anything. She never does when she's emotional."

My fingers tightened around the blanket.

That sentence.

That cruel, careless sentence.

It wasn't just about hurting me.

It was about making me doubt myself.

Making me believe I was the problem.

Emily paused the video.

"Say her name."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because you need to hear it."

My heart was already telling me.

But my mind refused to accept it.

"Who is she?"

Emily looked away.

Then she whispered:

"Your mother-in-law."

I froze.

Daniel's mother.

The woman who called me every week during my pregnancy.

The woman who brought me baby clothes.

The woman who held my hands and told me I was like a daughter to her.

Margaret.

I felt sick.

"No."

Emily nodded slowly.

"I wish I was wrong."

I looked at the screen again.

The paused video showed Daniel sitting at his desk.

The date was visible.

Three days before my delivery.

Three days before my entire life changed.

"What were they planning?"

Emily didn't answer immediately.

That scared me.

"What were they planning, Emily?"

She took a deep breath.

"Daniel wanted proof."

"Proof of what?"

She looked at me.

"That you were an unfit mother."

The room went silent.

My daughter's soft breathing was the only sound.

I stared at my baby.

My beautiful little girl.

The child I fought to protect.

The child I delivered alone.

And suddenly everything made sense.

The recordings.

The hidden camera.

The constant criticism.

The way Daniel always made me feel like I was failing.

It wasn't random.

It was preparation.

They weren't documenting my struggles.

They were creating a story.

A story where they could take my daughter away.

I covered my mouth.

"Oh my God."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry."

I looked at her.

"Sorry?"

She nodded.

"I should have seen it sooner."

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to blame her.

But I also saw something in her face.

Regret.

Real regret.

"How long did you know?"

She looked down.

"I knew something was wrong two weeks before you gave birth."

My heart sank.

"What happened?"

Emily took out her phone.

"I found this."

She opened another video.

It showed Daniel and Margaret sitting in their kitchen.

I watched silently.

The quality wasn't great.

But the voices were clear.

Margaret spoke first.

"She is too attached to that baby."

Daniel answered:

"That's exactly why we need to be careful."

I felt a wave of anger.

Too attached?

I was the mother.

The baby was mine.

Margaret continued:

"If everything goes correctly, people will believe she needs help."

Daniel nodded.

"And once everyone thinks she's unstable, custody won't be difficult."

I stopped breathing.

Custody.

They weren't just trying to embarrass me.

They were trying to take my daughter.

Emily stopped the video.

"I found this after I started questioning Daniel."

I looked at her.

"Why did you question him?"

She hesitated.

"Because of what happened that night."

I waited.

Emily looked ashamed.

"When I arrived at your house, I saw the bathroom door."

I remembered.

The locked door.

The fear.

The helplessness.

"What did you see?"

She swallowed.

"The lock was broken from the outside."

My eyes widened.

"What?"

Emily nodded.

"I didn't tell anyone because I was scared."

"Scared of what?"

She looked at me.

"Daniel."

Those two words explained everything.

The next morning, Officer Miller returned.

I showed her the flash drive.

The recordings.

The videos.

The messages.

Everything.

She listened quietly.

Then she looked at me.

"This changes the situation."

I sat up.

"What does that mean?"

"It means we need to investigate further."

I hated that answer.

Because further meant more waiting.

More uncertainty.

More time where Daniel could do something.

"What about my daughter?"

Officer Miller's expression softened.

"Right now, she stays with you."

A small amount of relief entered my chest.

But it disappeared quickly.

Because I knew Daniel.

He wouldn't stop.

Not when he had spent months creating a plan.

"Where is he?"

I asked.

Officer Miller looked at her notes.

"At home."

"Alone?"

She hesitated.

"No."

My stomach tightened.

"Who is with him?"

She looked at me.

"Margaret."

Of course.

The two people behind everything were together.

Planning.

Talking.

Maybe preparing their next move.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I stared at it.

Nobody spoke.

Emily looked nervous.

"Don't answer."

But I did.

I needed to know.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then a woman's voice.

Older.

Calm.

Controlled.

"You're making a mistake."

My entire body went cold.

"Margaret?"

A pause.

Then:

"You don't understand what Daniel has been trying to protect you from."

I almost laughed.

Protect me.

That word again.

"What did you do?"

Her voice became softer.

"I did what any mother would do."

I looked at my baby.

"What does that mean?"

The call ended.

A message arrived seconds later.

One photo.

I opened it.

And my hands started shaking.

It was a picture of my house.

Taken that morning.

The bathroom door.

The same bathroom where I gave birth.

But something was different.

The lock had been replaced.

And written on the door was a note.

Three words.

"She knows everything."

I stared at the photo.

Because someone had just been inside my house.

And they left that message for me...

A second notification appeared.

A security camera alert.

Motion detected inside the bedroom.

The bedroom where the hidden camera was still installed.

I opened the video feed.

And saw someone standing in front of the camera.

May you like

Someone who should not have been there.

Someone who turned toward the lens and whispered my name...
