Chapter 7 - The Second Phone

Police reached Evelyn before Mark could force anything from her.

She had been staying at a motel under another name.

Mark found her because he had access to an old emergency contact account she forgot existed.

When officers arrived, he fled through a rear stairwell.

Evelyn was shaken but unharmed.

Now there was no ambiguity.

Mark wasn't simply defending himself.

He was actively interfering with witnesses and evidence.

The warehouse became the focus.

Victor finally admitted he had hidden the original ledger there.

But the warehouse was enormous.

Decades of abandoned offices, storage rooms, and industrial equipment.

He claimed Evelyn knew the exact location.

She did.

An old accounting office on the second floor.

Inside a wall safe.

Investigators recovered it.

The ledger was devastating.

Dates.

Accounts.

Payments.

Initials.

Signatures.

Mark's name appeared repeatedly.

Travis's appeared later.

Victor's too.

The scheme had existed before either of them joined.

Mark had built it.

Daniel read only enough to understand.

Then he handed it back.

"I spent seventeen years trusting him."

Lena sat beside him.

"I spent eighteen months trusting Travis."

Daniel looked at her.

They understood each other in a way neither wanted.

Betrayal had different scales.

The wound felt strangely similar.

But the ledger contained another surprise.

One payment had gone to someone identified only as D.R.

Derek Reynolds.

Daniel stared.

"No."

Mercer said nothing.

Derek was called in.

He looked at the entry.

Twenty-five thousand dollars.

Seven years earlier.

"I never got this."

"Your name is here."

"I can see that."

"Do you have records from that period?"

Derek nodded.

"Probably."

He retrieved old bank statements.

No $25,000 payment.

But another account existed in his name.

One he hadn't opened.

Identity theft.

The account had been created using information from an old gym membership database.

The same gym Victor attended.

Someone had used Derek as camouflage.

Victor admitted it.

He had stolen Derek's information at Mark's direction.

Derek looked at him through the interview-room glass.

"Why me?"

Victor lowered his head.

"Because you were Daniel's brother. If anyone ever found the payment, Mark wanted suspicion inside the family."

Daniel remembered the photograph sent anonymously.

Derek and Victor.

Seven years earlier.

The manipulation had started long before any of them realized.

Mark didn't just steal money.

He created escape routes.

People to blame.

Stories to tell.

But there was still one mystery.

Who had been sending the anonymous messages?

Travis denied it.

Mark couldn't be located.

Victor denied it.

Then Lena remembered her second phone.

The missing one.

Investigators still hadn't found it.

"What if the messages came from my phone?"

Mercer checked.

The technical team analyzed metadata.

Lena was right.

The messages had been routed through an account linked to her hidden device.

Someone had taken it.

That someone had access to the recordings.

And possibly everything Lena had stored.

Travis was questioned again.

This time, he admitted taking the phone.

He found it the afternoon of the assault after noticing Lena recording him.

But he claimed he didn't send the messages.

"Where is the phone?"

He hesitated.

Then answered.

"I gave it to Mark."

Lena closed her eyes.

Of course.

Mark had used her own secret device to frighten her family.

To divide them.

To suggest Derek was involved.

To direct them toward evidence when it benefited him and away when it didn't.

But why direct them toward the hidden room?

Mercer had a theory.

Mark wanted investigators focused on Travis.

He expected the room to contain evidence incriminating Travis and Victor.

He didn't know Travis had stored material connecting Mark too.

Two conspirators had quietly begun building insurance against each other.

Their paranoia destroyed their own scheme.

Then came the break.

Mark's phone activated for seventeen seconds.

Location data placed him near Daniel's office.

Police responded.

He wasn't there.

But a security guard reported seeing a man matching Mark's description enter the parking structure.

Daniel was told to stay home.

He did.

For three hours.

Then his office security system alerted him remotely.

Someone had entered his private suite using an old executive override.

Mark.

Mercer called.

"We know."

"What's he looking for?"

"Probably something he thinks you have."

Daniel thought about the ledger.

Mark didn't know police had recovered it.

He might believe Daniel possessed it.

Then Lena said, "Dad, your desk."

"What?"

"The photograph."

Daniel understood.

Years earlier, he and Mark had taken a photograph when they bought the warehouse.

On the back, Daniel had written the combination to the warehouse's old office safe as a joke because Mark always forgot it.

He later framed the photograph.

If Mark remembered, he might believe the combination still mattered.

But the safe was already empty.

Police surrounded the building.

Mark was inside.

Daniel watched through a secure video feed.

Mark entered Daniel's office.

He searched drawers.

Then stopped.

He saw the framed photograph.

He removed it.

Turned it over.

His face changed.

He knew.

The camera had no audio.

But Mark's lips moved.

Then he looked directly at the security camera.

Almost as if he knew Daniel was watching.

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a phone.

Lena's hidden phone.

Daniel's own phone rang.

Unknown number.

Mercer told him to answer.

"Hello?"

Mark's voice.

"You finally figured it out."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"It's over."

"No."

"Police are outside."

"I know."

"Then surrender."

Mark laughed quietly.

"You still think this is about money."

Daniel looked at Mercer.

"What is it about?"

"Ask your daughter."

Daniel turned toward Lena.

Her face went pale.

Mark continued.

"Ask Lena what Travis told her the night before the wedding."

Lena stood abruptly.

"I don't know what he's talking about."

Mark heard her.

"Oh, yes, you do."

Lena's hand went to her mouth.

A memory surfaced.

Travis.

The rehearsal dinner.

A strange sentence after too much champagne.

If anything happens to Daniel, don't trust the person standing closest to him.

At the time, Lena thought he meant business rivals.

Now she understood.

"Dad."

Daniel looked at her.

Before she could explain, the video feed changed.

Mark walked toward Daniel's private records room.

He opened the door.

Then stopped.

Someone was already inside.

A figure stepped into view.

May you like

Daniel stared at the screen.

It was the last person any of them expected to see.
