Chapter 5 - The Girl Nobody Knew Existed

Grant turned toward Caleb.

“Your daughter?”

Caleb said nothing.

Nora stared.

“You have a daughter?”

Caleb’s face had lost all color.

“Lily.”

Grant looked at him.

“I have a niece?”

“She’s sixteen.”

Grant’s shock became anger.

“You had a child while hiding from me?”

“I had a life, Grant.”

“Apparently everybody had one except the man you all left holding a funeral program.”

“Not now.”

“Then when?”

Nora stepped between them.

“Where is Lily?”

Caleb looked toward the sealed vault.

“She was supposed to be in Vermont.”

Grant’s anger vanished.

“Call whoever had her.”

“No signal.”

Rafael examined the vault controls.

“We’ve got maybe thirty minutes before they drill emergency access.”

Grant looked at the master ledger.

“What does Dane want erased?”

Caleb opened it.

“Everything.”

Names.

Account numbers.

Payment chains.

Wire transfers.

Photographs.

The ledger connected Victor Dane to decades of bribery, murder, intimidation, and political corruption.

Enough to destroy him.

Enough to destroy Grant too.

Nora noticed.

“Your name is in there.”

Grant nodded.

“So is mine,” Caleb said.

Rafael added, “Mine too.”

Nora looked at them.

“If this goes public, all of you could go to prison.”

Grant closed the book.

“Good.”

Caleb stared.

“What?”

Grant looked at his brother.

“Dad said destroy Dane with truth.”

“That doesn’t mean hand prosecutors twenty years of our own crimes.”

“It means exactly that.”

Rafael laughed quietly.

“I waited two decades for you to figure that out.”

Grant looked at him.

“You could have mentioned it.”

“You were busy setting warehouses on fire.”

Fair.

Nora studied Grant.

“You’d really turn this over?”

“If it ends this.”

“And your empire?”

Grant looked at her.

“Maybe it should end too.”

Something shifted between them.

Nora had expected arrogance.

Violence.

Excuses.

Instead, Grant Callahan was standing inside a locked bank vault deciding whether to destroy the very power that defined him.

Caleb paced.

“We still have Samuel and Lily.”

Nora said, “Dane wants the ledger. So he needs us alive.”

“Until midnight.”

Grant looked at the microfilm reel.

“Is everything duplicated?”

Caleb nodded slowly.

“Samuel made three copies.”

“Where?”

“One is this reel. One is with Samuel.”

“And the third?”

Caleb smiled faintly.

“I don’t know.”

Nora understood.

“Your father made sure nobody knew everything.”

“Exactly.”

Rafael checked his watch.

“We need a plan.”

Grant looked at the bank manager.

“Can this vault connect to the internet?”

The manager blinked.

“It’s a vault.”

“Computer terminal?”

“Security office outside.”

Grant smiled.

“Then we let them open the door.”

Twenty-two minutes later the drill stopped.

An emergency override engaged.

The vault door moved.

Dane’s men expected surrender.

They got smoke.

The bank’s fire-suppression system erupted the instant the door cracked open.

Rafael and Caleb hit the first two men.

Grant took the third.

Nora swung the heavy document box into another man’s wrist.

His gun skidded across the marble.

She looked at Grant.

“I cut meat.”

Grant almost laughed.

They reached the security office.

Caleb locked the door.

Grant handed the microfilm to the manager.

“Can you digitize it?”

“There’s an archival scanner.”

“Do it.”

Nora asked, “Then what?”

Grant looked at her.

“We send it everywhere.”

Caleb hesitated.

“That puts Lily at risk.”

“Dane will kill her if we surrender too.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know men like him.”

Nora interrupted.

“No.”

Both brothers looked at her.

“Samuel warned us not to give Dane the ledger. That means he believes Lily has a better chance if Dane doesn’t get what he wants.”

Caleb stared at the floor.

Nora touched his arm.

“He kept me alive for sixteen years. Trust him one more night.”

The manager scanned the microfilm.

Files appeared.

Hundreds.

Grant found one labeled INSURANCE.

Inside was a list of journalists, federal prosecutors, and attorneys.

Samuel had built a release network.

Grant smiled.

“He planned this.”

Caleb nodded.

“Dad always said Samuel was the smartest man in the room.”

Nora whispered, “He could have tried being the smartest man in my living room.”

Grant glanced at her.

“You’re going to hit him when we find him, aren’t you?”

“With something soft.”

“That’s considerate.”

The computer chimed.

UPLOAD READY.

Grant moved the cursor toward SEND.

Caleb grabbed his wrist.

“Wait.”

Grant looked at him.

Caleb stared at one file.

LILY_CALLAHAN_LOCATION.

His daughter’s name.

He opened it.

A live tracker appeared.

The location was moving.

Nora leaned closer.

“She’s in a car.”

Rafael checked the map.

“Heading east.”

Grant recognized the route.

“Dane Tower.”

Caleb’s face tightened.

“Why take her there?”

Grant looked at him.

“Because midnight isn’t a trade.”

“What is it?”

“A show.”

Victor Dane wanted Grant, Caleb, Samuel, the ledger, and every surviving piece of Gideon Callahan’s rebellion in one place.

Grant clicked SEND.

The files began uploading.

12%.

19%.

Then the screen went black.

A message appeared.

THANK YOU FOR SHOWING ME THE THIRD COPY.

Caleb whispered, “No.”

Grant tried the keyboard.

Nothing.

Dane had been watching.

The building lights died again.

Nora looked toward the security monitor.

A camera feed activated.

Not the bank.

Her butcher shop.

The shop was dark.

Someone sat in the chair behind her register.

Samuel.

Untied.

Alive.

Nora stepped toward the screen.

“Dad?”

Samuel looked directly into the hidden camera.

He held up a handwritten sign.

DO NOT COME TO DANE TOWER.

Grant frowned.

Samuel lowered the sign.

Then somebody walked into frame behind him.

A teenage girl.

Dark hair.

Terrified eyes.

Caleb stopped breathing.

“Lily.”

Lily looked toward the camera.

Samuel handed her another sign.

Caleb read it aloud.

YOUR DAUGHTER ESCAPED.

Relief crossed his face.

Then Samuel lifted a third sign.

Grant read the words.

DANE DOESN’T HAVE US.

Nora whispered, “Then who does?”

The camera widened.

Another person was standing in the butcher shop.

Dominic.

Grant’s young enforcer.

He held a gun against Samuel’s back.

Dominic looked directly into the camera and smiled.

Then he raised a fourth sign.

VICTOR DANE ISN’T THE ONE YOU SHOULD FEAR.

The feed cut to black.

Grant’s phone rang.

Dominic’s name appeared.

Grant answered.

Dominic spoke only six words.

“Ask Caleb who really killed Gideon.”

May you like

Then the bank security door unlocked by itself.

Someone began walking toward them.
