Chapter 6 - The Man Behind The Photograph

The door opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Not Ronan.
Not Sadie.
Not even the person standing outside.
For a few seconds, the only sound inside the hidden office was the quiet hum of the building's security system.
Then the figure stepped into the light.
Sadie's breath disappeared.
"Thomas?"
Her manager stood in the doorway.
The same man who had handed her the tray.
The same man who had told her to stay invisible.
The same man who had always looked away when she came to work with pain hidden beneath her clothes.
But he wasn't looking nervous anymore.
He wasn't looking confused.
He looked like someone who had finally stopped pretending.
Ronan immediately moved in front of Sadie.
"Close the door."
Thomas didn't move.
"I didn't come here to fight."
Ronan's expression hardened.
"That's not what I asked."
Thomas slowly looked at Sadie.
And that was the moment she noticed something.
Fear.
Not in herself.
In him.
Thomas was afraid.
But not of Ronan.
Of what he was about to say.
"You shouldn't have opened that file."
Sadie's fingers tightened.
"You knew about it."
Thomas looked away.
"Yes."
The answer was simple.
Too simple.
Sadie felt something inside her collapse.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another piece of her life that everyone else understood except her.
"How long?"
Thomas swallowed.
"Sadie..."
"How long did you know?"
He didn't answer.
She stepped forward.
"How long?"
"Since before you started working at the Continental."
The words hurt more than she expected.
She laughed quietly.
A tired, broken sound.
"Of course."
Ronan looked at Thomas.
"Who sent you?"
Thomas looked at him.
"Nobody."
"Wrong answer."
Thomas shook his head.
"You still don't understand."
Ronan's eyes narrowed.
"Then explain."
Thomas looked at Sadie.
"Your mother trusted me."
The room became silent.
Sadie stared.
"My mother?"
Thomas nodded.
"I knew your mother before you did."
The words made no sense.
"You knew her?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Thomas looked down.
"Because she asked me not to."
Sadie felt anger rising.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
Her voice became louder.
"Everyone keeps saying my mother wanted this. My mother wanted that. My mother asked them to protect me."
She pointed at the letter.
"But nobody ever asks what I wanted."
Nobody answered.
Because there was no answer.
Thomas walked slowly into the room.
Ronan watched every movement.
"You have one minute."
Thomas nodded.
"Fair."
He looked at Sadie.
"Your mother wasn't just running from someone."
Sadie waited.
"She was trying to protect you from something."
"What?"
Thomas looked at Ronan.
And Sadie noticed.
That look.
The hesitation.
The guilt.
Everyone always looked at Ronan before saying the truth.
Like the truth belonged to him.
"She found out what Ronan's father was doing."
Sadie turned.
"Ronan's father?"
Ronan's face became cold.
"Thomas."
"No."
Thomas shook his head.
"She deserves to know."
Sadie looked between them.
"What was he doing?"
Thomas took a breath.
"Your mother discovered a network."
"What kind of network?"
"One that involved powerful people."
"That doesn't explain anything."
"No."
Thomas looked at her.
"But this will."
He reached into his coat.
Ronan immediately reacted.
"Don't."
Thomas stopped.
Slowly, he pulled out a small device.
A flash drive.
Sadie's eyes moved to it.
"What is that?"
"The reason your mother disappeared."
Ronan's expression changed.
"What?"
Thomas looked at him.
"You thought it was destroyed."
Ronan stepped forward.
"Where did you get that?"
Thomas smiled sadly.
"Your mother gave it to me."
The room froze.
Sadie looked at Ronan.
"You didn't know?"
For the first time, Ronan had no answer.
That terrified her.
Because Ronan Hayes always knew something.
Thomas placed the flash drive on the desk.
"She recorded everything."
Sadie stared.
"My mother?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't she give it to the police?"
Thomas looked at her.
"Because she didn't know who she could trust."
The answer felt painfully familiar.
Sadie looked at the flash drive.
"What's on it?"
Thomas hesitated.
Then:
"The names of the people who wanted her silent."
A cold feeling moved through the room.
Ronan looked at the device.
"Where is the original?"
Thomas looked away.
"Hidden."
"Where?"
Thomas didn't answer.
Sadie noticed.
"You know."
Thomas nodded.
"I do."
"Tell me."
"I can't."
"Why?"
His eyes met hers.
"Because if I tell you, they will know you have it."
Sadie stepped closer.
"They already know."
Silence.
Because she was right.
Someone had taken photos of them.
Someone had accessed Ronan's private office.
Someone had left messages.
The question wasn't whether they were watching.
The question was how close they already were.
Ronan picked up the flash drive.
"Why now?"
Thomas looked at him.
"Because she found the letter."
Ronan's face darkened.
"Who sent the letter?"
Thomas didn't answer.
Sadie looked at him.
"You don't know?"
Thomas shook his head.
"No."
Then his expression changed.
"But I know who wanted her to find it."
"Who?"
Thomas looked at Ronan.
And Sadie felt the answer before he spoke.
"Someone who believed Ronan was the reason your mother died."
Nobody spoke.
The words stayed in the air.
Sadie looked at Ronan.
"Is that true?"
Ronan didn't answer immediately.
That was enough.
Her heart sank.
"Ronan."
He looked at her.
"I didn't kill your mother."
She wanted to believe him.
She did.
But there was something in his eyes.
Something he wasn't saying.
"What aren't you telling me?"
Before he could answer, every screen inside the office suddenly turned on.
The monitors.
The security display.
The computer.
All of them.
A single video file appeared.
No one touched anything.
No one moved.
The file name appeared in white letters.
SADIE.
Thomas stepped backward.
"No."
Ronan looked at the screen.
"Who opened that?"
Then the video started.
A woman appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Sadie stopped breathing.
Because she knew that face.
She had seen it in photographs.
She had spent years trying to remember it.
Her mother's voice filled the room.
"Sadie..."
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
The woman on the screen looked directly at the camera.
"If you're watching this, it means they failed to keep you away from the truth."
Sadie covered her mouth.
Ronan stood completely still.
May you like
Then her mother's next words made the entire room go silent.
"Before you trust Ronan Hayes... you need to know what he did the night I disappeared."
