Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Marble

The storm hit the city three days later, matching the chaotic storm raging through the local news. Victoria’s live stream had gone viral just as she wanted, but things weren't going according to her plan. Instead of ruining me, it brought out people who remembered Arthur’s last years—nurses, neighbors, and old business partners who knew the truth about how cold his family had been.

I was staying at a small, rented cottage on the edge of town, surrounded by cardboard boxes filled with Arthur’s personal papers. I wasn't resting; I was working around the clock, organizing financial statements, bank transfers, and old medical records.

Around midnight, my front door was rattled by heavy knocking. Bang! Bang! Bang!

I walked over cautiously and looked through the peephole. Standing out in the pouring rain, soaked to the bone and shivering, was Victoria. The arrogance she had worn like armor three days ago was completely gone. Her eyes were wide with panic, her hands shaking violently as she gripped her designer purse.

I unlocked the door and opened it just a few inches. "It's late, Victoria."

"Let me in, Eleanor! Please, you have to let me in!" she sobbed, her voice cracking.

I stepped back, allowing her to stumble inside. She collapsed onto the small sofa in the living room, leaving a trail of rainwater on the wooden floor. She looked broken.

"What happened?" I asked calmly, folding my arms.

"The red file..." Victoria gasped, catching her breath. "We opened the safe. Brandon brought a locksmith... we read what was inside."

"And?"

"Arthur didn't leave us bankrupt because he was mean," she whispered, looking up at me with terror in her eyes. "He was paying off our father’s secret debts! All those luxury houses, the cars, the high-society lifestyle my family lived for twenty years... it was all funded by dirty loans from people who don't care about the law!"

She grabbed my hands, her fingers ice-cold. "They came to the house tonight, Eleanor! Men in dark suits! They said Arthur’s death meant the debt was now due immediately! $5 million dollars! They said if we don't pay by Friday, they will take everything—my house, Brandon’s business, everything! Why didn't you warn us?!"

I slowly pulled my hands away from hers.

"Because Arthur wanted you to finally face reality," I said sternly. "For twenty years, you treated Arthur like an endless bank account. You called him a fool behind his back, but you took his money to fund your fake, glamorous lives. When he got sick, you abandoned him because you thought the money was already guaranteed in his will."

"We were wrong! I was wrong!" Victoria wept, covering her face. "Please, Eleanor! Arthur gave you control of his remaining assets! The land in the valley, the offshore account—you have enough to clear the debt! Help us! Don't let them destroy my children!"

I stared down at her. Part of me wanted to let her suffer the consequences of her own greed. But I remembered Arthur’s face on his final night. He was weak, his hand trembling in mine, but his words were clear: “Don't let them ruin themselves, Eleanor. Teach them a lesson, but save them from the fire.”

"I won't pay a single cent of that debt for free," I told her, my voice turning like steel. "If I step in, you hand over every legal right to the family company. Brandon resigns from the board. You publically admit on camera that you lied about me. You give up the vanity, and you start working for your own bread."

Victoria stared at me, paralyzed by the choice. She was forced to choose between her pride and her survival.

"You have until tomorrow morning at eight," I added, walking toward the door. "Make your decision."
