Chapter 3 - The Name Inside the Envelope

“Leo Barnes.”
David Henderson's recorded voice said the name clearly.
Arthur stopped the recording.
Chloe stared at him.
“No.”
Arthur replayed it.
Same words.
Same name.
But then Chloe grabbed his wrist.
“You stopped it too early.”
Arthur pressed PLAY again.
David's voice continued.
“Leo Barnes is the only person Vincent trusted enough to know where the evidence was hidden.”
Arthur slowly released his breath.
“He wasn't betraying my father.”
“No,” Chloe said.
“He was protecting something.”
The recording continued.
David explained that Vincent Romano had discovered Malcolm Croft was quietly manipulating companies connected to both families.
Vincent wanted out.
Not from business.
From the cycle surrounding it.
He planned to restructure everything legitimate under a protected trust and expose the financial scheme.
David Henderson had helped him.
So had Samuel Reed.
Leo, still a teenager, had unknowingly transported sealed documents between them.
Then Vincent died.
Three days later, David became frightened.
He hid the second key.
Months later, David died too.
Officially, both deaths had been explained.
But David's recording suggested neither man had believed they were safe.
Arthur sat motionless.
Chloe watched the son hear his father's voice through another man's recording.
For the first time, she understood that Arthur had been carrying questions for years.
The recording ended with instructions.
Two keys.
Two boxes.
One ledger.
And evidence hidden somewhere Malcolm could never legally enter without Arthur.
“The Romano trust property,” Arthur said.
Chloe nodded.
“Where?”
Arthur knew.
His father's old lake house.
It had remained locked since Vincent died.
Arthur had never returned.
His phone rang.
Vivien.
He nearly ignored it.
Chloe said, “Answer.”
Arthur put it on speaker.
“Where are you?” Vivien asked.
“Why?”
“My father knows Chloe survived.”
Arthur looked at Chloe.
“So?”
“So you need to leave Chicago.”
Arthur went silent.
Vivien's voice cracked.
“You think I knew about the wine.”
“Didn't you?”
“I knew something was going to happen. I didn't know what.”
“What did you know?”
“My father told me the wedding had to happen today. No delays. No changes.”
“You agreed.”
“I've spent my entire life agreeing with Malcolm Croft.”
“That's not an answer.”
“No. It's an explanation.”
Arthur's anger remained.
“Why did you recognize Chloe?”
Silence.
“Vivien.”
“Because I saw the photographs.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
The photographs Malcolm had used to threaten him.
“He showed you.”
“Yes.”
“You knew why I left her.”
“Yes.”
“And you still stood at the altar.”
Vivien's answer came quietly.
“I was afraid too.”
Then she said something Arthur didn't expect.
“I have the second laboratory report.”
Arthur stood.
“What?”
“Your friend wasn't the only person who tested the wine.”
“Where are you?”
“My father's house.”
“Get out.”
“I can't.”
“Vivien.”
“I found his safe.”
A sound came through the phone.
A door opening.
Vivien whispered, “Someone's coming.”
The call ended.
Arthur grabbed his coat.
Chloe blocked him.
“You can't walk into Malcolm's house.”
“Watch me.”
“That is exactly the kind of thinking that got us here.”
“My almost-wife just told me she's trapped.”
“And you're going to help her by getting trapped too?”
Arthur stared at Chloe.
She was right.
He hated that.
“What do you suggest?”
“We use what Malcolm doesn't know.”
“Which is?”
“That we know about the lake house.”
Arthur looked at the metal box.
They left the diner.
Before sunrise, Arthur, Chloe, and two trusted security staff reached the Romano lake property.
Arthur unlocked the door.
Dust covered everything.
His father's study remained untouched.
Chloe found the second lock behind a bookcase.
Arthur used Samuel's key.
Inside was a narrow safe.
The second key from David's box opened it.
Arthur expected money.
Instead, he found documents.
Corporate records.
Signed statements.
Copies of transfers.
And a sealed envelope addressed to him.
ARTHUR.
He opened it.
His father's handwriting covered three pages.
Arthur read silently.
Vincent had known someone was manipulating the Romano family's finances.
He had also known Malcolm wanted control of the trust.
But the final paragraph changed everything.
Arthur read it twice.
Chloe touched his arm.
“What?”
Arthur handed her the letter.
She read:
If Malcolm cannot control my son through fear, he will try through marriage. Arthur must understand that the Croft daughter is not the architect of this. She is another piece on Malcolm's board.
Chloe looked up.
“Vivien.”
Arthur nodded.
His phone buzzed.
A photograph arrived from Vivien.
A laboratory report.
Then another image.
A page from Malcolm's safe.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
At the bottom:
LEO BARNES — REMOVE BEFORE CEREMONY.
Arthur stared.
“That's why Leo disappeared.”
Another message.
This one wasn't from Vivien.
It was from Leo.
I'M SAFE.
Arthur immediately called.
Leo answered.
“Where are you?”
“Samuel's.”
Arthur swore.
“You could have told me.”
“I couldn't tell who had your phone.”
“Why is Malcolm trying to remove you?”
“Because I remembered something.”
“What?”
“The night your father died.”
Arthur sat down.
Leo explained.
He had been nineteen.
Vincent had sent him to Henderson's Diner with an envelope.
David had taken it.
Leo left.
Later that night, he saw Malcolm's car near Vincent's house.
He told police.
The statement disappeared.
Arthur felt seventeen years of anger reorganize itself.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I did.”
“When?”
“The night after your father's funeral.”
Arthur remembered almost nothing from that week.
“I told your uncle.”
Arthur froze.
“What uncle?”
Leo became silent.
Arthur's father had one younger brother.
Anthony Romano.
Anthony had left Chicago after Vincent's death.
Or so Arthur had believed.
“Leo?”
“Arthur, Anthony never left.”
Chloe looked up.
“What?”
Leo continued.
“He changed his name.”
Arthur's heart began pounding.
“To what?”
Before Leo could answer, headlights appeared outside the lake house.
A car stopped.
Arthur moved toward the window.
One man stepped out.
Gray hair.
Expensive coat.
A face Arthur hadn't seen since his father's funeral.
Arthur whispered, “Uncle Anthony.”
Chloe came beside him.
Anthony Romano looked directly toward the study window.
Then he raised his phone.
Arthur's rang.
He answered.
Anthony said only six words.
May you like
“Your father didn't die by accident.”
Then the front door opened downstairs.
