Chapter 8 - The Flight That Never Reached Paradise

The bank was twelve minutes away.
Police reached it in seven.
Ava arrived with Dante and Lorraine moments later.
No gunfire.
No dramatic siege.
Just a locked private-banking floor and terrified employees.
The manager opened it.
Vanessa sat against the wall.
Alive.
She ran to Ava.
For one second, Ava did nothing.
This was her sister.
Her maid of honor.
The woman who kissed Ava’s fiancé and humiliated her publicly.
Then Vanessa broke.
“I’m sorry.”
Ava held her.
Not because everything was forgiven.
It wasn't.
But because Vanessa was alive.
“Where’s Adrian?”
Vanessa pointed toward the vault corridor.
“He went after him.”
“After who?”
“Richard’s lawyer.”
The lawyer had arrived with forged authority to access Thomas Monroe’s box.
Adrian stopped him.
Police found both men in the corridor.
Adrian was sitting on the floor.
His tuxedo jacket was gone.
His face looked exhausted.
When he saw Ava in her wedding gown, shame crossed his expression.
“Ava.”
She stopped several feet away.
No embrace.
No tears.
No reunion.
“You used me.”
“Yes.”
“You stole my credentials.”
“Yes.”
“You used my sister.”
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“Yes.”
Vanessa flinched.
Ava’s voice remained calm.
“Did you ever love me?”
Adrian struggled with the answer.
That told her enough.
“I thought I did.”
Ava nodded once.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For finally telling the truth.”
Adrian looked down.
The bank manager brought the safe-deposit box.
Lorraine inserted Thomas’s key.
Inside was no money.
No jewels.
Just an old microcassette recorder and a stack of documents.
Ava pressed play.
Her father’s voice filled the room.
“If you're hearing this, Richard Hale found out I was investigating him.”
Ava covered her mouth.
She had forgotten the exact sound of his voice.
Now it came back across twenty-three years.
Thomas described the false companies.
The accounts.
The money.
Then another name.
Martin Vale.
Richard’s lawyer.
The man police had just detained.
Thomas explained that Richard designed the system.
Martin moved the funds.
Then Thomas revealed something unexpected.
Dante had not been involved.
Neither had Elena.
Thomas had planned to give them everything.
The recording ended with a message for Lorraine.
“I know you're scared. But one day Ava will understand these numbers better than any of us. If she ever hears this, tell her I was proud of her before she even knew what she was capable of.”
Ava cried then.
Not like she had at the altar.
Those tears had been humiliation.
These were grief.
Twenty-three years delayed.
Dante quietly stepped away.
Vanessa held Lorraine.
Even Adrian turned his face.
Investigators took possession of the evidence.
Combined with E-17, it was enough to expose Richard’s network.
But one problem remained.
The missing $8.4 million.
Ava looked at Adrian.
“Where is it?”
He gave her the account chain.
“I never intended to keep it.”
“Then why move it?”
“To make Richard react.”
“You stole eight million dollars to conduct an investigation?”
“I was desperate.”
“That isn't an excuse.”
“I know.”
“And the twelve million?”
“Richard.”
Adrian explained.
Richard had discovered Adrian was investigating him.
He offered Adrian a deal.
Help destroy Ava’s credibility and Adrian would inherit control of DeLuca Holdings.
Adrian agreed outwardly.
Then tried to create his own trap.
But Richard anticipated it.
Vanessa became collateral.
“And the video?” Ava asked.
Vanessa began crying.
“I agreed to that.”
Ava looked at her.
“I wanted to hurt you.”
The honesty was brutal.
“Why?”
“Because my whole life, everyone compared me to you.”
“I spent my whole life protecting you.”
“I know.”
Vanessa wiped her face.
“That made it worse.”
Ava stared.
Vanessa continued.
“You were always the responsible one. The successful one. The one who fixed everything. And I hated you for making it look easy.”
“It wasn't easy.”
“I know that now.”
Ava felt something loosen.
Not forgiveness.
Understanding.
Sometimes those were different things.
Adrian was taken into custody for his role in the theft and unauthorized access.
He didn't resist.
Before leaving, he looked at Ava.
“I am sorry.”
Ava nodded.
“I believe you.”
Hope flashed across his face.
Then she finished.
“But believing your apology doesn't mean you get me back.”
Adrian lowered his eyes.
He left.
Dante stood beside Ava.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Dante said, “Your wedding dress has had a difficult day.”
Ava looked down.
The hem was gray.
One pearl was missing.
Her veil was gone entirely.
She laughed.
It surprised everyone.
Especially her.
Dante almost smiled.
Police transported Richard away.
Martin followed.
The evidence was secure.
Vanessa was safe.
For the first time, it seemed the worst might actually be over.
Then Elena called Dante.
He answered.
His face changed immediately.
“What?”
Ava watched him.
Dante ended the call.
“The company board is meeting tonight.”
“So?”
“Richard activated an emergency motion before his arrest.”
“To do what?”
Dante looked at Ava.
“To sell DeLuca Holdings.”
Ava stared.
“To whom?”
Dante showed her the buyer’s name.
Ava recognized it instantly.
May you like
It was the same company that had received the stolen $8.4 million.
And the signature approving the sale belonged to someone standing inside the bank.
