Chapter 12 - The Croft Family’s Last Move

The cathedral looked different without a wedding.
Chloe carried Grace.
Arthur walked beside her.
Vivian followed.
The key opened a small archive room behind the sacristy.
Inside was a safe.
Arthur inserted the key.
It opened.
Thomas Henderson had left letters.
Dozens.
Some for Chloe.
Some for Arthur.
One for Elena.
One for Daniel.
A final envelope was labeled:
FOR THE DAY THE FAMILIES CHOOSE PEACE.
Chloe opened it.
Thomas had anticipated almost everything.
He knew Daniel’s evidence might destroy both families.
He also knew destruction alone would not create anything better.
So he left instructions for a trust funded from money he had quietly removed from Salvatore’s hidden accounts.
The money was meant for victims of Romano and Croft violence.
Arthur sat down.
“How much?”
Vivian checked the records.
“Thirty-eight million.”
Arthur stared.
Chloe smiled through tears.
“Dad stole from the mafia.”
Arthur almost laughed.
“My father.”
“Our father, in different ways.”
Arthur looked at her.
“Yes.”
They created the Thomas Henderson Foundation.
Vivian contributed Croft assets.
Arthur matched them.
The first grants went to families harmed by both organizations.
Months passed.
Grace learned to roll over.
Then crawl.
Arthur learned diapers.
Badly.
Chloe photographed the first attempt.
“If that picture ever leaves your phone—”
“What?”
“I know people.”
“You retired.”
“I know retired people.”
Their life became strangely ordinary.
Which was exactly what Chloe wanted.
But peace still required truth.
Arthur visited Harrison in prison.
“Why did you hate Thomas?”
Harrison looked older.
“Because he could walk away.”
“From what?”
“Power.”
Harrison laughed bitterly.
“We spent our lives trying to own everything. Thomas had nothing, and somehow he was freer than all of us.”
Arthur understood.
Before leaving, Harrison said, “There’s one thing you don’t know.”
Arthur stopped.
“Michael wasn’t the last person loyal to Salvatore.”
Arthur turned.
“Who?”
Harrison smiled.
“Someone close to your mother.”
Arthur drove home immediately.
Elena was gone.
Her room had been searched.
A message waited on the mirror.
ARTHUR, DON’T LOOK FOR ME.
He called Chloe.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
He opened the home security feed.
Chloe’s car was still outside.
Grace was with the nanny.
But Chloe wasn’t there.
Then the front camera showed Elena leaving.
Chloe was following her.
Arthur enlarged the image.
Elena appeared frightened.
Chloe appeared determined.
May you like
And in the passenger seat of Elena’s car sat a man Arthur had believed dead since childhood.
Salvatore Romano.
