Chapter 9 - The Trap at Vance Cybersecurity

The woman was not Clara.
She was close enough to fool a distant camera, but facial analysis confirmed it.
A disguise.
Eleanor was creating evidence.
Within an hour, “Clara” appeared on cameras entering two locations linked to stolen corporate data.
Someone wanted my wife framed.
This time we moved faster.
Maya preserved every feed.
Federal investigators obtained warrants.
Daniel documented the timeline.
And Clara did something Eleanor never expected.
She went public internally.
Not to the press.
To my board.
She appeared by secure video and told them exactly what had happened.
The sleeping closet.
The redirected calls.
The forged documents.
The attempt to frame her.
She showed the bruise.
Then she said, “I am not asking you to believe me because I’m Marcus Vance’s wife. I’m asking you to preserve evidence and let investigators establish the truth.”
I watched the board members.
That sentence changed the room.
My mother’s plan depended on Clara appearing unstable.
Clara appeared anything but.
The board froze all transfers.
Richard resigned his advisory position.
Victoria surrendered her access.
I voluntarily suspended my unilateral signing authority until the investigation ended.
No one would steal the company.
Including me.
That evening, Maya discovered the trap.
The attempted breach at headquarters had not been designed to steal information.
It had planted information.
Files supposedly showing Clara conspiring with Adrian.
Fake.
Good fakes.
But not perfect.
One timestamp used a server clock that had been retired four months earlier.
Eleanor had made a mistake.
A tiny one.
Enough.
Then Adrian contacted me again.
He wanted immunity.
Not mine to give.
He offered the ledger.
“Where?”
“Board meeting tomorrow.”
“You’re insane.”
“Probably.”
“Why there?”
“Because Eleanor will come.”
“How do you know?”
“Because she needs the company vote.”
There was an emergency board meeting scheduled for nine.
Eleanor still controlled proxies through three minor shareholders.
Not enough to take control.
Enough to create chaos.
Adrian said she would appear.
I didn’t trust him.
Investigators did not either.
So we prepared.
At 8:58 the next morning, I entered the boardroom.
Daniel beside me.
Maya behind me.
Evelyn across the table.
Clara attended remotely from the secure residence.
At nine, Richard entered voluntarily with his attorney.
Victoria followed.
At 9:03, the elevator opened.
Eleanor stepped out.
Perfectly dressed.
No fear.
No apology.
Two attorneys walked beside her.
She entered the room and looked at me.
“Marcus.”
“Mom.”
She sat.
“You’ve made a terrible mess.”
I almost admired the audacity.
“You kidnapped Leo.”
“Absurd.”
“You assaulted Clara.”
“Also absurd.”
“We have recordings.”
“Edited.”
“Financial records.”
“Fabricated.”
“Richard’s testimony.”
She smiled.
“Your father is a frightened criminal trying to save himself.”
Richard looked down.
That one was partly true.
Eleanor placed a folder on the table.
“I am calling for Marcus Vance to be removed as CEO.”
Nobody spoke.
“On what grounds?”
“Compromised judgment.”
She presented the forged Clara files.
I let her.
Twenty minutes.
Page after page.
Lie after lie.
Then she finished.
I asked one question.
“Is that everything?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
I pressed a button.
The dining-room recording played.
Victoria’s voice filled the boardroom.
“Let her eat the scraps. A useless woman doesn’t deserve a seat at our table.”
Then Eleanor:
“Tomorrow, once Marcus signs the power of attorney, this nightmare is over.”
My mother’s expression finally changed.
Richard’s voice followed.
“First we clear her and the boy out of the house. Then we transfer the corporate shares.”
The room went silent.
Eleanor stood.
“This meeting is over.”
“No,” Evelyn said.
“It’s beginning.”
Then the boardroom doors opened.
Federal agents entered.
Eleanor froze.
But they walked past her.
Past Richard.
Past Victoria.
They stopped beside me.
“Marcus Vance?”
“Yes?”
“We need you to come with us.”
Clara’s face appeared on the screen.
“Marcus?”
I stared at the agent.
“What is this?”
He placed a document in front of me.
An arrest warrant.

And at the bottom was the accusation that changed everything.
The stolen corporate funds had been transferred into an account bearing my authenticated digital signature...
