Chapter 6 - The Heir Hidden In The Shadows

"You're not Esperanza Mendoza's grandson."
Don Mateo Vargas's words stayed in my mind.
I wanted to reject them.
I wanted to laugh.
I wanted to tell him he was wrong.
But the expression on his face stopped me.
Don Vargas was a man who controlled an empire.
A man who could make entire rooms go silent with a single look.
Yet now he looked like someone who had just watched his entire world collapse.
"Explain."
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
Don Vargas looked at the black screen where Victor Salazar's message had disappeared.
Then he looked at the old folder on the table.
"I need to show you something."
I didn't move.
"No more secrets."
He nodded.
"No more secrets."
The guards slowly stepped away.
Even they seemed to understand that whatever was coming next was not something they were supposed to interrupt.
Don Vargas opened the folder again.
This time, he pulled out documents hidden beneath the old photographs.
Medical records.
Birth certificates.
Reports.
Everything was aged.
Everything had been carefully preserved.
My eyes moved across the pages.
Then I saw my name.
Aurelio.
But the surname was different.
Not Mendoza.
Another name.
A name I had never seen before.
I looked up.
"What is this?"
Don Vargas took a deep breath.
"Before Esperanza became your grandmother, she was part of another family."
I frowned.
"That doesn't explain anything."
He pointed at the document.
"Your biological parents were not who you were told they were."
The room felt colder.
"My parents..."
I swallowed.
"They're alive?"
Nobody answered immediately.
And that silence told me more than words could.
My hands tightened.
"Are they alive?"
Don Vargas looked at Sofia.
The older woman closed her eyes.
Then she whispered.
"Your father was."
I froze.
"Was?"
Don Vargas continued.
"Your father discovered the same thing your grandmother discovered."
"The list?"
He nodded.
"The people controlling the city."
I looked at the papers again.
"Why would they hide my identity?"
Don Vargas walked toward the window.
"Because your father was not just someone who found a secret."
He looked back at me.
"He was the person who could expose it."
I shook my head.
"I don't understand."
Don Vargas placed another photograph on the table.
It showed a young man.
A woman.
And a baby.
The baby was me.
The young man was holding me.
My chest tightened.
I had no memory of that moment.
But somehow, looking at the picture felt familiar.
"This is your father."
I stared.
"Who was he?"
Don Vargas hesitated.
Then he said:
"Adrian Valdez."
The name meant nothing to me.
But Sofia reacted immediately.
She stepped back.
"Adrian Valdez?"
Don Vargas nodded.
She covered her mouth.
"I thought he was gone."
"He was."
Don Vargas looked at me.
"But before he disappeared, he trusted Esperanza with the one thing he cared about most."
My voice became a whisper.
"Me."
Nobody answered.
Because it was true.
My grandmother didn't take me in because she had no choice.
She took me because someone asked her to protect me.
I thought about all the years I spent wondering why she never told me about my parents.
Why she always looked worried.
Why she kept moving.
She wasn't hiding from the world.
She was hiding me from it.
A sound came from outside.
A loud crash.
Everyone immediately reacted.
Guards moved toward the doors.
Don Vargas looked toward the windows.
"What happened?"
A guard checked his radio.
Then his face changed.
"Someone breached the east side."
Don Vargas's expression hardened.
"Victor."
The guards moved quickly.
I watched them prepare.
But something felt wrong.
Victor had been standing outside the gate.
He had wanted us to see him.
He wanted us to know he was there.
This wasn't a surprise attack.
It was a message.
"He's not here to kill us."
Everyone looked at me.
I didn't know why I said it.
But I knew.
Victor could have attacked from the shadows.
Instead, he sent videos.
Photographs.
Warnings.
He wanted us to discover something.
Don Vargas studied me.
"You sound like Esperanza."
I ignored the comment.
"He's trying to make you find the truth."
Don Vargas looked uncomfortable.
"Sometimes the truth is more dangerous than a bullet."
Before I could answer, the mansion lights flickered again.
The security system activated.
But this time, the screen didn't show Victor.
It showed my grandmother.
Another recording.
Everyone froze.
A new video.
Different from the first.
Don Vargas slowly approached.
"No..."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He didn't answer.
The video started.
My grandmother appeared sitting in the same dark room.
But this time, she looked scared.
Not nervous.
Terrified.
"Aurelio..."
She looked directly into the camera.
"If you are seeing this message, then the truth has already reached you."
I stepped closer.
"I need you to listen carefully."
Her voice shook.
"There is someone inside Mateo's organization who has been helping the people hunting you."
Don Vargas's face changed.
"What?"
My grandmother continued.
"Someone close to him."
The room became silent.
Every person looked at each other.
Everyone became a suspect.
Guards.
Advisers.
Friends.
Family.
My grandmother looked down.
"I couldn't tell Mateo because I didn't know who I could trust."
Don Vargas clenched his fists.
"Esperanza..."
The video continued.
"The person who betrayed your father is still alive."
My heart stopped.
"My father?"
My grandmother nodded slightly.
"He wasn't killed because of what he knew."
A pause.
"He was killed because of what he was going to reveal."
The video suddenly glitched.
Static covered the screen.
Then one final message appeared.
A location.
An old abandoned warehouse near the docks.
And underneath it...
A name.
ADRIAN VALDEZ.
My father's name.
Don Vargas immediately grabbed the table.
"That place..."
He looked terrified.
"What?"
He stared at the address.
"That's where your father disappeared."
Nobody spoke.
The room filled with tension.
After twenty years, the answer was waiting somewhere.
I looked at Don Vargas.
"We're going there."
He shook his head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because if someone left that message for you..."
He looked toward the dark hallway.
"...they want you to go there."
I stepped forward.
"Maybe."
I looked at the picture of my father holding me.
"But maybe they also know I deserve the truth."
Don Vargas stared at me.
For a moment, I saw something different in his eyes.
Not fear.
Not doubt.
Pride.
He nodded.
"Prepare the cars."
The guards moved.
Minutes later, the mansion was in motion.
Everyone was preparing.
Everyone except one person.
Sofia.
She stood near the table, staring at the old documents.
I noticed something.
She was crying.
"Sofia?"
She quickly wiped her face.
"What happened?"
She looked at me.
"I should have told your grandmother the truth before she disappeared."
"What truth?"
She hesitated.
Then reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Yellow.
Sealed.
My name was written on it.
Again.
Aurelio Mendoza.
"I was supposed to give this to you only if Mateo found you."
I took the envelope.
My hands shook.
"What is inside?"
Sofia looked toward Don Vargas.
Then back at me.
"Something your grandmother was afraid even Mateo would discover."
I opened my mouth to ask more.
But the mansion suddenly went dark.
The power failed.
Again.
This time, nobody moved.
Because everyone knew.
This wasn't a coincidence.
A single sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Someone was inside.
Don Vargas reached for his weapon.
The guards surrounded me.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
A voice I had never heard before.
But everyone else recognized.
"Mateo..."
Don Vargas froze.
The person stepped closer.
May you like
And Sofia whispered the name she had been afraid to say.
"Rafael..."
