Chapter 7 - The Man Behind My Father’s Disappearance

The front door unlocked.
Nobody moved.
For one second, the entire house felt frozen.
My mother stood beside me.
Admiral Carter was near the hallway.
Daniel was staring toward the entrance.
Everyone was waiting.
Listening.
Then the door opened slowly.
Not violently.
Not rushed.
Almost calmly.
That scared me more.
Because whoever was outside wasn't trying to break in.
They already knew they belonged there.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Stay behind me."
My mother immediately grabbed my arm.
"No."
I looked at her.
She wasn't afraid for herself.
She was afraid for me.
The person outside stepped inside.
A shadow appeared first.
Then a familiar voice.
"Rachel."
My mother's face changed.
I had seen that expression before.
When she saw Daniel.
When she saw the message.
When she realized the past had returned.
Recognition.
Fear.
Pain.
The man walked into the light.
And my entire world stopped.
Because I knew him.
Not personally.
But I knew his face.
I had seen it every morning.
On my own bathroom mirror.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
The same quiet sadness.
The man standing in front of me looked older.
Different.
But there was no doubt.
My father.
Michael Miller.
Alive.
I couldn't speak.
I couldn't move.
For years, I had imagined what it would be like to meet the father I never knew.
Sometimes I imagined anger.
Sometimes I imagined asking why he left.
Sometimes I imagined not caring.
But I never imagined this.
That he would simply walk through my front door.
Alive.
My mother whispered his name.
"Michael..."
His eyes moved to her.
Then to me.
And I saw tears forming.
"Lucas."
Hearing him say my name felt strange.
Like hearing a song I had forgotten.
I stepped backward.
"No."
Everyone looked at me.
I shook my head.
"No, this isn't real."
Michael looked hurt.
"I know what this looks like."
"You know?"
My voice cracked.
"You know what this looks like?"
I laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
"Do you know what it was like growing up without you?"
My mother looked down.
Michael didn't defend himself.
That somehow made it harder.
"I thought you were gone."
His eyes stayed on mine.
"I know."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"You don't know."
My anger finally came out.
"You don't know what it feels like when everyone else has a father and you have nothing."
The room was silent.
"I didn't even know your name."
Michael closed his eyes.
A painful expression crossed his face.
"I wanted to come back."
"Then why didn't you?"
He looked at my mother.
Then at Admiral Carter.
And I understood.
There was a story they still weren't telling me.
"There were reasons."
I shook my head.
"Everyone has reasons."
The words came out before I could stop them.
"Everyone keeps secrets and says it's to protect me."
My mother looked hurt.
But she didn't argue.
Because she knew I was right.
Michael slowly walked toward the table.
He looked at the photographs.
The documents.
The flash drive.
"You found everything."
Daniel looked at him.
"Not everything."
Michael nodded.
"Good."
I frowned.
"Good?"
He looked at me.
"Because if Lucas found everything already, we were too late."
The sentence made the room colder.
"Too late for what?"
Nobody answered.
I was tired of that.
"Stop."
Everyone looked at me.
"I want the truth."
My voice shook.
"But this time, all of it."
Michael looked at me for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
"Okay."
He sat down.
"My disappearance wasn't planned."
My mother looked at him.
"Michael."
He continued.
"Lucas deserves to know."
Admiral Carter remained silent.
Daniel leaned against the wall.
Listening.
"My last mission was supposed to expose someone inside Phoenix."
I remembered the name.
The program.
The secret.
"The person who was using it."
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
"Who?"
He looked at the floor.
"I never found out."
That surprised me.
"You disappeared and you don't know?"
"I found pieces."
He looked at the flash drive.
"But someone found me first."
"What happened?"
Michael took a breath.
"I was attacked."
My mother closed her eyes.
"I thought you died."
Michael looked at her.
"I know."
The sadness between them was obvious.
"But someone helped me escape."
I looked at Daniel.
"Daniel?"
Michael nodded.
"He risked everything."
Daniel looked away.
"Because Rachel was going to lose both of you."
I looked at my mother.
"Both of us?"
She didn't answer.
Michael did.
"Lucas, your mother wasn't just protecting you from people who wanted information."
He paused.
"She was protecting you from the truth about your family."
My stomach tightened.
"What truth?"
Michael looked at me.
"The person who caused my disappearance knew about you before you were born."
Silence.
"What?"
He nodded.
"They weren't trying to stop me."
"Then what were they trying to do?"
Michael's expression became serious.
"They were trying to erase my family."
The words stayed in the room.
Erase.
I looked at my mother.
She looked like she had been carrying this fear for years.
"Who would do that?"
Michael didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at Admiral Carter.
William Carter looked away.
And that was when I noticed something.
The admiral wasn't surprised.
Not completely.
Like he had expected this moment.
"Admiral."
He looked at me.
"Did you know my father was alive?"
The room became silent.
He didn't answer.
That was enough.
"You knew."
His face changed.
"Lucas..."
"You knew."
I looked at him.
"You let me believe he was dead."
"I was trying to protect you."
I laughed bitterly.
"Everyone says that."
The admiral lowered his eyes.
"I made mistakes."
Michael stood.
"William wasn't the one who betrayed us."
I looked at him.
"Then who was?"
Michael walked toward the laptop.
"The person who created the message."
He pressed a key.
The frozen video returned.
The file that had stopped before revealing the identity.
The screen flickered.
A new section appeared.
The identity reveal began loading.
Everyone gathered around.
A name slowly appeared.
I watched the letters form.
M...
I...
L...
The screen suddenly went black.
Everyone froze.
Then a message appeared.
"ACCESS DENIED."
Michael stepped back.
"No."
My mother looked at him.
"What?"
He stared at the screen.
"Someone just blocked it."
"Who?"
Michael didn't answer.
Then the laptop camera turned on by itself.
A live video appeared.
A person was sitting in a dark room.
Their face was hidden.
But their voice was clear.
"Hello, Lucas."
My blood ran cold.
The person continued.
"I know you've been looking for answers."
My mother whispered:
"No..."
The voice continued.
"But before you find out who your father really is..."
A pause.
"You need to know who your mother was working for."
The screen flickered.
A photograph appeared.
It showed my mother.
Standing beside another person.
A person none of us expected.
Admiral Carter stepped closer.
His face lost all color.
Because the person in the photograph was him.
And beneath the image was one sentence:
"William Carter was never protecting Rachel Miller."
The screen went black.
May you like
Then a final message appeared.
"Ask him what happened the night your father disappeared..."
