Chapter 2 - The Truth in the Shadows

Claire stood frozen in the cold storage unit.
The rain hammered against the tin roof above.
Sarah’s recorded words echoed in Claire’s mind.
"Lily did not die in that hospital."
Claire’s hands shook uncontrollably in the dark.
She pressed the play button on the tape again.
Only static came from the tiny speaker.
The tape had reached its violent end.
Claire looked at the laptop on the desk.
Beside the computer lay a black flash drive.
A small label on the drive read: EVIDENCE.
Claire grabbed the flash drive with icy fingers.
She ran back to her idling SUV.
Toby was sleeping quietly in the back seat.
Claire closed her door and locked the vehicle.
She plugged the flash drive into her dashboard port.
A menu appeared on the center display screen.
It contained several digital video files.
The files were dated seven years ago.
Claire clicked on the very first video file.
The screen showed a dark hospital hallway.
A timestamp in the corner read two in the morning.
Doctor Thorne appeared on the camera footage.
He was carrying a small blanketed bundle.
Julian walked close behind Doctor Thorne.
Julian carried a second blanketed bundle in his arms.
They stopped near a rear exit door.
A woman in a raincoat stepped into the frame.
It was Sarah, Claire’s younger sister.
Sarah looked nervous and exhausted on camera.
Julian handed his bundle over to Sarah.
Sarah held the baby against her chest.
Then Sarah handed Julian an envelope of cash.
Julian counted the bills quickly on video.
"This is forty thousand," Julian said on screen.
"You promised fifty thousand dollars, Sarah."
Sarah wiped tears from her red face.
"That is all I could raise on short notice."
"Give me the boy and let me leave."
Julian took the cash and nodded slowly.
"The boy is officially yours now," Julian said.
" Claire thinks he died during delivery."
"She will never ask any questions about him."
Claire watched the screen with tears overflowing.
Her own husband had lied about her son.
He had sold her child to her sister.
Claire clicked on the second video file.
This video was recorded six months ago.
Sarah was sitting in a brightly lit room.
Her face looked thin and pale from illness.
"Claire, I am so sorry," Sarah said on tape.
"I was desperate for a child of my own."
"Julian told me you didn't want the boy."
"He said you only wanted the girl."
"I paid him because I was foolish."
"Then last year, I found out the truth."
"Julian lied to both of us, Claire."
"Lily was not buried in that cemetery."
"Doctor Thorne placed another child’s ashes there."
"Lily was given to a private adoption firm."
"Julian took two hundred thousand dollars for her."
Claire choked back a painful sob in her car.
Her daughter was still alive somewhere out there.
The tombstone she had visited for years was empty.
Suddenly, headlights flashed in her side mirror.
A large black SUV pulled up behind her.
It blocked her vehicle inside the storage lane.
The driver’s side door opened immediately.
Julian stepped out into the pouring rain.
Doctor Thorne stepped out from the passenger side.
Julian walked up to Claire’s driver window.
He knocked hard against the heavy glass.
"Open the door, Claire," Julian shouted.
"We need to talk about this right now."
Claire shifted her vehicle into reverse.
She slammed her foot down on the gas.
Her rear bumper hit Julian’s heavy SUV.
The metal crunched loudly in the quiet lane.
Julian stepped back, cursing into the rain.
Claire turned the wheel and accelerated forward.
She squeezed past Julian’s vehicle with inches to spare.
Her car scraped against the concrete wall.
Sparks flew into the dark rain behind them.
Claire drove wildly out onto the main road.
Toby woke up startled in the back seat.
"What is happening?" Toby cried out.
"It is okay, Toby," Claire said, trying to stay calm.
"We are going somewhere safe right now."
Claire drove straight toward the city center.
She needed to go to the police station.
She picked up her phone to call emergency services.
The screen suddenly flashed a low battery warning.
The phone shut off completely a second later.
Claire slammed her hand against the steering wheel.
She looked in her rearview mirror anxiously.
Headlights were trailing her three cars behind.
Julian was still following her through town.
Claire turned sharply onto a side street.
She pulled into the parking lot of Oakridge Diner.
The diner was bright and busy with customers.
Julian would not cause a scene inside there.
Claire unbuckled Toby and grabbed the flash drive.
They ran through the rain into the diner.
A bell chimed warmly above the glass door.
An elderly waitress greeted them with a smile.
"Table for two tonight, sweetie?"
"I need to use your phone," Claire begged.
"My car broke down and my phone died."
The waitress pointed toward the back hallway.
"Landline phone is right by the restrooms."
Claire took Toby’s hand and walked quickly.
She dialed the local sheriff’s department number.
An officer answered on the second ring.
"Oakridge County Sheriff's office, state your emergency."
"My name is Claire Miller," she said rapidly.
"My husband sold my children seven years ago."
"I have video proof on a flash drive."
The officer paused on the line.
"Ma'am, did you say your husband sold children?"
"Yes!" Claire cried into the receiver.
"Doctor Thorne at the hospital helped him!"
"My daughter is alive and my son is here."
The officer’s voice grew suddenly distant.
"Doctor Thorne?" the officer asked carefully.
"Doctor Thorne is the county medical examiner."
"He is currently in our office right now."
Claire felt her blood run cold instantly.
Doctor Thorne was connected to the local police.
He held authority over official medical records.
"Who am I speaking with?" Claire asked quietly.
"This is Deputy Miller," the voice replied.
"Julian Miller’s cousin."
Claire hung up the phone immediately.
She could not trust the local department.
Julian’s family was woven into the town’s power.
Claire looked around the diner hallway nervously.
There was a rear exit door leading to an alley.
Claire pushed the push-bar door open gently.
Cold air rushed into the warm hallway.
She led Toby out into the dark alleyway.
Rain poured down onto the wet asphalt.
A black car was parked near the trash bins.
A woman stepped out from the driver’s seat.
She wore a dark coat and carried an umbrella.
Claire stepped back, bracing for a fight.
The woman raised her hands in a peaceful gesture.
"Claire, stop," the woman said softly.
"I am not here with Julian."
The woman pulled down her wet umbrella.
Claire recognized her face from the news.
It was Detective Evelyn Reed from the state police.
"Your sister Sarah contacted me two weeks ago," Evelyn said.
"She gave me copies of those financial records."
"We have been building a federal case against Thorne."
Claire stared at the detective in disbelief.
"Is my daughter really alive?" Claire asked.
Evelyn walked closer with a gentle look.
"Yes, Claire," Evelyn confirmed softly.
"Lily was adopted by a family in Vermont."
"They had no idea the adoption was illegal."
"They believed her biological mother had passed away."
Toby held onto Claire’s jacket tightly.
"Is Sarah really dead?" Toby asked Detective Reed.
Evelyn looked down at the little boy sorrowfully.
"Sarah passed away three days ago in Chicago."
"She made sure Toby was sent to Claire first."
"She wanted to right her wrong before dying."
Claire wrapped her arm tightly around Toby.
"Where is Julian right now?" Claire asked.
"He is searching for you at your home," Evelyn said.
"We need your flash drive to secure the arrest."
Claire held out the black flash drive.
"Everything is on this drive," Claire said.
"The money transfer, the videos, the hospital logs."
Evelyn reached out to take the drive.
A loud gun click echoed in the quiet alley.
Julian stepped out from behind the large dumpster.
He held a small black pistol in his hand.
"Hand over that drive, Detective," Julian ordered.
His eyes were wild and full of desperation.
"You are not ruining my life over this," Julian snarled.
Doctor Thorne stepped out right behind him.
"Julian, keep your voice down," Thorne warned.
"We can fix this quietly right now."
Julian pointed the gun directly at Claire.
"Give me the drive, Claire!"
"You were always too weak to handle reality!"
"I did what was necessary for our future!"
"We were deeply in debt seven years ago!"
Claire looked Julian directly in his eyes.
"You sold our children for money," she said clearly.
"You made me grieve at an empty grave for years."
"You are a monster, Julian."
Julian raised the barrel of the gun higher.
"I don't care what you think of me!"
"Give me the drive or nobody leaves this alley!"
Toby suddenly stepped in front of Claire.
He held up the wooden music box in his hands.
"Stop hurting my mom!" Toby shouted bravely.
Julian looked down at the child in shock.
His hand shook slightly on the gun grip.
"Get out of the way, kid," Julian muttered.
"You were never supposed to be here."
In that moment of hesitation, Evelyn acted.
She pulled her service weapon from her jacket.
"State Police! Drop your weapon now!" Evelyn shouted.
Doctor Thorne turned around to run away.
Two state trooper cars sped into the alleyway.
Red and blue lights illuminated the wet brick walls.
Sirens wailed loudly in the tight space.
Troopers jumped out with weapons drawn.
"Drop the gun! Hands in the air!"
Julian looked around at the rising lights.
He realized his entire world was collapsing.
The gun slipped from his wet fingers.
It clattered loudly against the wet pavement.
A trooper tackled Julian to the ground instantly.
Doctor Thorne was pinned against the brick wall.
Handcuffs clicked securely around Julian’s wrists.
Julian looked up at Claire from the pavement.
"Claire, please help me!" Julian begged.
"I did it for us! I loved you!"
Claire looked down at him with total coldness.
"You never loved anyone but yourself," Claire said.
They dragged Julian away into the police cruiser.
Doctor Thorne was placed in the second car.
Detective Evelyn put her gun back into her holster.
She turned to Claire with a warm smile.
"It is over, Claire," Evelyn said gently.
"They will never hurt you or Toby again."
Claire dropped to her knees in the rain.
She pulled Toby into a long, tight embrace.
She wept tears of relief against his shoulder.
Toby hugged her back with his small arms.
"Am I going to stay with you now?" Toby asked.
Claire pulled back and looked into his eyes.
"Yes, Toby," Claire promised him.
"You are coming home with me forever."
Evelyn walked over to the police vehicle.
She opened the door and retrieved a file.
She handed a paper document to Claire.
"This is the location of your daughter in Vermont," Evelyn said.
"Her name is Maya there."
"Her adoptive parents are waiting for your call."
"They were lied to just like you were."
Claire took the paper with trembling hands.
She saw a small photograph attached to the top.
A seven-year-old girl smiled at the camera.
She had Claire’s green eyes and dark curls.
Claire touched the photograph gently with her thumb.
Suddenly, Evelyn’s radio buzzed with a message.
"Detective Reed, we have a problem at headquarters."
Evelyn raised the radio to her mouth.
"What is the issue, officer?"
"The adoption firm in Vermont just called us."
May you like
"Maya’s adoptive parents fled their house an hour ago."
"They took the girl and crossed the border."
