Chapter 2 - The Trial of Blood and Betrayal

The three months following our eviction were a living nightmare, but they were also the months that forged a fire inside me I never knew I possessed.
Julian and I moved into his modest, sunlit apartment in town. While Brandon spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of my business capital throwing lavish galas at Montgomery Manor to cement his status among the local elite, Julian and I spent our nights eating cold takeout over piles of financial audits and legal records.
The public perception on social media was brutal. Victoria had launched a ruthless smear campaign online, posting edited video clips of our Thanksgiving argument and claiming that Julian had brainwashed me into abandoning my sick grandson. Local townspeople gossiped at grocery stores. Longtime friends stopped answering my phone calls. I was portrayed as a senile, selfish woman who traded her family for a younger husband.
But behind the scenes, Brandon’s greed was leading him straight into a trap.
Through Julian’s father—a retired forensic accountant who volunteered to analyze the Montgomery corporate tax filings—we discovered something alarming. Brandon wasn't just managing the business; he was burning through cash at a terrifying speed. He had accumulated over two million dollars in illegal offshore gambling debts to a high-stakes syndicate in Atlantic City. To cover his tracks, he had begun liquidating the assets in my grandson Leo’s medical trust fund, canceling the boy's upcoming life-saving gene therapy treatment in Boston.
When I found out about Leo's medical fund, my heartbreak turned into righteous, unyielding fury. A mother might forgive a son for betraying her, but a grandmother will tear down heaven and earth to protect her grandchild.
"We strike now," I told our legal counsel, Sarah Sterling, a formidable trial attorney who took my case after reviewing my father's leather ledger.
"Clara, the emergency hearing for the permanent conservatorship is in three days," Sarah warned us in her office. "Brandon’s lawyers are going to drag Julian through the mud. They’ll portray him as a con artist and you as incapacitated."
"Let them try," Julian said firmly, taking my hand. "Because they don't know what we found in the vault."
The morning of the court hearing, the county courthouse was packed with reporters, local influencers, and curious onlookers eager to watch the fall of the Montgomery empire. Brandon and Victoria arrived flanked by a team of high-priced corporate attorneys, wearing tailored designer suits and broadcasting smug confidence to the news cameras outside.
Inside the courtroom, Brandon took the stand first. Under oath, he wept tears that belonged in an Oscar-winning movie, describing how "painful" it was to strip his elderly mother of her freedom to "protect her from a fortune hunter."
"My mother is a fragile woman," Brandon testified, looking at the judge with practiced sorrow. "She is being manipulated by Julian Vance. I am doing this only out of love for her and to protect my son’s future."
Then, it was my turn to take the stand.
I wore a simple navy blue dress, my hair pinned back neatly, walking with my head held high. I didn't look like a victim. I looked like a matriarch ready to reclaim her throne.
"Mrs. Montgomery," Brandon's lawyer began, stepping forward with an arrogant smile. "Isn't it true that within six weeks of meeting Mr. Vance, you transferred thirty percent of your personal checking account to his personal credit line?"
"It is true," I replied calmly into the microphone. "Because Mr. Vance was purchasing specialized medical equipment to convert his guest room into a sterile care space for my grandson, Leo—equipment that my son, Brandon, refused to buy after he froze Leo's medical trust."
A murmur rippled through the gallery. The judge leaned forward, knitting her brows. "Explain that statement, Mrs. Montgomery."
Sarah Sterling stepped forward, delivering a thick stack of certified bank records to the bench. "Your Honor, we submit Exhibit A: bank statements proving that over the last ninety days, Brandon Montgomery has embezzled $1.4 million from Leo Montgomery's medical fund to pay off illegal gambling debts in New Jersey."
Brandon’s face instantly drained of color. His lead attorney jumped up. "Objection! This is irrelevant to the conservatorship motion!"
"It is entirely relevant to the executor's fitness, Your Honor," Sarah snapped back. "And it gets worse. We also submit Exhibit B: the original, unamended Montgomery Family Deed and Birth Trust sealed in 1988."
Sarah turned around, looking directly at Brandon.
"Brandon claims to be the sole rightful heir to the Montgomery estate through his legal father, Richard Montgomery. However, DNA testing ordered through sealed probate records—along with the recorded ledger of Clara's late father—proves conclusively that Brandon is not Richard Montgomery's biological son, but was adopted in secret after a private family arrangement."
The courtroom exploded into chaos. Gavel bangs echoed off the walls as journalists rushed to text their editors. Victoria turned to Brandon, her eyes wide with shock and terror, whispering frantically while Brandon stared at me in horror, his hands shaking violently.
"Furthermore," Sarah continued above the noise, "the original deed created by Clara's father explicitly states that the Montgomery Manor estate was bequeathed solely to Clara and her biological lineage. Because Brandon lied on his executor filings and committed corporate fraud, his transfer of the estate is legally null and void!"
Brandon lunged toward the microphone, his polished composure completely shattering. "She's lying! She's crazy! I am a Montgomery! That house is mine!"

The judge slammed her gavel down with thunderous force. "Order in the court! Mr. Montgomery, sit down immediately or I will have you removed in handcuffs!"
Looking at my son's panicked, furious face across the aisle, I realized the boy I had raised had been consumed by greed. But the story was far from over—because as Brandon realized he was about to lose everything, he did something that threatened to destroy our entire family forever.
