Chapter 6 - The Trial That Divided a City

The Hale house stood dark beneath the rain.
Police vehicles waited three blocks away with their lights off. Tactical officers surrounded the neighborhood.
Ryker wore a hidden microphone beneath his shirt.
The flash drive in his pocket was a replica.
Lily was not with him.
Despite Vanessa’s demand, Ryker refused to bring her anywhere near the house.
Instead, a small transmitter hidden in the replica drive broadcast the engraving from Lily’s bow.
The real child remained inside an armored command vehicle with Dana and Dr. Cole.
Ryker approached the front door alone.
It opened before he knocked.
Vanessa stood inside.
She looked different from the woman at the airport. Her hair was tangled. Dark circles surrounded her eyes. A pistol rested in her hand.
“Where is Lily?”
“Where is Owen?”
She raised the weapon.
“You don’t negotiate here.”
“Then shoot me.”
Vanessa blinked.
Ryker continued.
“But if I die, you never get the key.”
She looked past him into the rain.
“You brought police.”
“No one followed me.”
“You’re lying.”
“You asked for the drive.”
He held it up.
“Show me Owen.”
Vanessa stepped aside.
The boy sat tied to a chair in the dining room. Tape covered his mouth. His face was wet with tears.
He saw Ryker and began struggling.
“I’m here,” Ryker said. “You’re going home.”
Vanessa pressed the gun against his back.
“Move.”
She led him into Daniel’s old office.
Charles Voss waited beside a laptop.
He was older than Ryker remembered, with silver hair and a face softened by luxury.
“Ryker,” Voss said. “Still collecting debts no one asked you to pay.”
“You had Daniel killed.”
Voss shrugged.
“Daniel was sentimental. He mistook access for power.”
Vanessa slammed the office door.
“The drive.”
Ryker placed it on the desk.
Voss connected it to the laptop.
“Password?”
Ryker recited the code from Lily’s bow.
The encrypted files opened.
Voss smiled.
He did not know the laptop screen was being mirrored to police.
Folders appeared containing transfer records, private accounts, bribery ledgers, and recordings of Voss ordering Vanessa to increase Daniel’s poison dosage.
There was enough evidence to convict them both.
Voss began deleting files.
Ryker watched the progress bar.
“You killed Daniel for money you had already stolen.”
“I killed no one.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“You told me what to use.”
Voss’s smile vanished.
Ryker saw the division and pushed it.
“He’s going to blame you.”
Vanessa tightened her grip on the gun.
Voss said, “Do not listen to him.”
“You bought the poison,” Ryker continued. “You put it in Daniel’s tea. Voss never touched the cup.”
“He promised me protection.”
“He is deleting the evidence and preparing to leave you behind.”
Vanessa looked at the laptop.
Voss reached toward his jacket.
Ryker moved first.
He struck Voss’s wrist as the older man drew a gun.
A shot exploded into the ceiling.
Vanessa screamed.
Ryker drove Voss into the desk.
The office door opened.
Owen stood there.
He had freed one hand by rubbing the rope against a broken chair edge.
“Run!” Ryker shouted.
Vanessa grabbed Owen.
The gun pressed against his head.
Everything stopped.
Voss lay bleeding beside the desk.
Ryker raised his hands.
“Let him go.”
“Give me the real key,” Vanessa said.
“You already opened the files.”
“There’s another account.”
Voss laughed weakly from the floor.
“She still thinks there’s money for her.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“You promised.”
“There was never an account in your name.”
Her face collapsed.
Voss had used her.
She had poisoned Daniel, abused his children, and abandoned them for wealth that did not exist.
“You liar,” she whispered.
She turned the weapon toward Voss.
Ryker lunged.
The gun fired.
Glass shattered.
Tactical officers stormed the room.
Ryker hit the floor with Owen beneath him, shielding the child.
Vanessa was restrained.
Voss was arrested.
The bullet had missed everyone.
For several seconds, Owen did not move.
Then he wrapped both arms around Ryker’s neck.
“You came.”
“I promised.”
Police carried Owen outside.
Lily ran from the command vehicle before anyone could stop her.
The twins collided in the rain and held each other so tightly they fell to their knees.
Ryker stood over them, soaked and shaking.
That image spread across the country the next morning.
Not because Ryker released it.
A nearby homeowner recorded the reunion through a window.
Public opinion changed overnight.
The trial began four months later.
Vanessa faced charges of murder, attempted kidnapping, child endangerment, fraud, poisoning, and conspiracy.
Charles Voss faced murder conspiracy, financial crimes, kidnapping, bribery, and attempted destruction of evidence.
The courtroom was packed every day.
Vanessa’s defense claimed coercion.
Her attorney argued that Voss manipulated her and that Daniel’s illness caused paranoia.
Then prosecutors played the recordings.
Vanessa’s voice filled the courtroom.
“He’s getting suspicious.”
Voss answered, “Increase the dose.”
“What about the children?”
“They inherit unless you control them.”
“And if I don’t want them?”
“Then solve the problem.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
But the most devastating testimony came from Lily.
The judge allowed her to speak through closed-circuit video with Dr. Cole beside her.
Lily described the pantry.
She explained how Vanessa locked them inside when Daniel asked too many questions.
She recalled seeing Vanessa put drops into her father’s tea.
“Daddy told me not to tell,” Lily said. “He said Vanessa would hurt Owen.”
Vanessa began crying.
Lily looked at the courtroom screen.
“You cried at Daddy’s funeral too. But you weren’t sad.”
The courtroom went silent.
Owen did not testify in person.
Instead, prosecutors played a recorded interview.
He held Benny throughout it.
“What did your father tell you about the bear?” the interviewer asked.
“He said Benny would take us to the man from the picture.”
“Who was the man?”
“Ryker.”
“Why?”
“Because Daddy said Ryker keeps promises.”
The jury deliberated for less than six hours.
Vanessa was found guilty on every major count.
Voss was convicted as well.
At sentencing, Vanessa asked to speak.
She turned toward Ryker.
“You stole my children.”
Ryker looked at Lily and Owen sitting beside Dana.
“They were never yours to throw away.”
Vanessa received life imprisonment without parole for Daniel’s murder, plus additional consecutive sentences.
Voss received life imprisonment and forfeiture of his assets.
The stolen funds were recovered and placed into the twins’ trust.
After the courtroom emptied, Ryker found Lily and Owen near the windows.
“Is it over?” Owen asked.
“The trial is.”
“Can Vanessa come back?”
“No.”
Lily looked relieved, but uncertainty remained.
“What happens to us now?”
The final custody hearing had been scheduled for the following week.
Ryker’s foster certification was complete.
He had also filed a petition to adopt them.
But the decision belonged to the judge.
“We go home,” he said.
Lily looked up.
“Your home?”
Ryker crouched in front of them.
“Our home, if you still want it to be.”
Owen smiled.
May you like
Lily wrapped her arms around him.
For the first time, she did not ask whether he would leave.
