Chapter 9 - The Choice Between Power and Love

The day everything changed began with a message.

Not a phone call.

Not a warning.

Just three words appearing on Nathaniel's screen.

Come alone.

I watched his expression change as he read it.

That was how I knew.

Whatever Adrian Vale had planned...

It had finally begun.

For a few seconds, Nathaniel simply stood there.

Silent.

Still.

The same way he stood before making a difficult business decision.

But I knew him better now.

I knew the difference between his calm and his fear.

And this was fear.

"Nathaniel."

He looked at me.

"I need you to stay here."

The words immediately made me angry.

Not because he wanted to protect me.

Because he still believed protecting me meant leaving me behind.

"No."

His jaw tightened.

"Emily."

"No."

I stepped closer.

"You don't get to disappear every time something becomes dangerous."

"This is different."

"You always say that."

"It is."

"Why?"

His expression hardened.

"Because this time, I might not come back."

The honesty stopped me.

For a moment, I saw the man behind everything.

Not the billionaire.

Not the businessman.

Not the person everyone feared.

Just Nathaniel.

Someone who had spent his entire life preparing to lose people.

I lowered my voice.

"Don't say that."

He looked away.

"Emily."

"No."

I shook my head.

"Don't make your decision before the fight even starts."

The silence between us was heavy.

Then Nathaniel did something I never expected.

He reached for my hand.

Not because someone was watching.

Not because cameras were nearby.

Not because we needed to pretend.

Because he wanted to.

"I need you to understand something."

His voice was quiet.

"If something happens to me, you leave."

My heart tightened.

"No."

"You take the money."

"No."

"You protect yourself."

"Nathaniel."

"Emily."

The way he said my name stopped me.

Because there was something in his voice.

Something close to desperation.

"I spent my whole life building something nobody could take away from me."

He looked at me.

"And then you came along."

I held my breath.

"You became the one thing I couldn't replace."

The words were almost a confession.

Almost.

But Nathaniel still struggled with saying things that mattered.

"I don't want to lose you."

For the first time...

Nathaniel Crane admitted exactly what he was afraid of.

The meeting was scheduled for midnight.

An abandoned warehouse near the harbor.

A place that matched Adrian perfectly.

Old.

Forgotten.

Full of secrets.

Nathaniel wanted to go alone.

Of course he did.

But this time, I didn't let him.

"I am coming with you."

"No."

"Yes."

"This is not a discussion."

I looked at him.

"Funny."

"What?"

"You said that before."

A brief silence.

Then, unexpectedly...

He smiled.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But real.

"You are impossible."

"Maybe."

I grabbed my coat.

"But you married me."

For a second, Nathaniel just looked at me.

And I saw something different.

Not fear.

Not control.

Acceptance.

Like he was finally realizing I wasn't someone he needed to protect from life.

I was someone willing to stand beside him through it.

The warehouse smelled like old metal and rain.

Nathaniel walked ahead.

I stayed close.

Not behind him.

Beside him.

That mattered.

The moment we entered, Adrian appeared.

He stood near the center of the room.

Calm.

Relaxed.

Almost amused.

"I was wondering when you would finally bring her."

Nathaniel's expression changed.

"Leave her out of this."

Adrian laughed softly.

"Still pretending you have control."

His eyes moved toward me.

"You really are different."

I said nothing.

Adrian smiled.

"You know what is interesting about Nathaniel?"

I looked at him.

"He spent years becoming exactly like the people he hated."

Nathaniel's voice became cold.

"Enough."

"No."

Adrian stepped closer.

"He wants you to believe he is different."

He looked at me.

"But the truth is, he built his empire the same way his father did."

I felt Nathaniel tense.

That was the first time I realized...

Adrian wasn't just trying to hurt him.

He was trying to expose him.

"Don't listen to him."

Nathaniel said quietly.

But I noticed something.

He wasn't angry.

He was afraid.

Because maybe part of Adrian's words contained truth.

"What are you talking about?"

I asked.

Nathaniel remained silent.

Adrian smiled.

"Ask your husband about the accounts."

The room became quiet.

"What accounts?"

Nathaniel looked away.

That was enough.

My heart sank.

"Nathaniel."

"I was going to tell you."

"When?"

He didn't answer.

Adrian laughed.

"Of course he was."

His voice became colder.

"He always tells people the truth when it's too late."

I looked at Nathaniel.

Not with anger.

With disappointment.

Because after everything...

I thought we were past secrets.

"I didn't tell you because I wanted to protect you."

His voice was low.

"From what?"

"The truth."

I shook my head.

"You still don't understand."

Nathaniel looked at me.

"Understanding what?"

"That keeping me away from the truth doesn't protect me."

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because they were exactly what he needed to hear.

Adrian revealed everything.

Years ago, Nathaniel's father had built a hidden financial network.

Some legal.

Some not.

When Nathaniel inherited the company, he spent years cleaning it.

Destroying the illegal connections.

Cutting ties.

But Adrian had kept records.

Enough to damage Nathaniel.

Enough to destroy everything he built.

"You could have controlled everything," Adrian said.

"But you chose to be honorable."

He smiled.

"What a waste."

Nathaniel stepped forward.

"You are done."

Adrian laughed.

"Am I?"

He looked at me.

"Your wife doesn't know the best part."

My eyes narrowed.

"What?"

Adrian smiled.

"Nathaniel didn't marry you only because of your brother's debt."

The room went silent.

I turned toward Nathaniel.

"What does that mean?"

Nathaniel's expression changed.

Adrian continued.

"He knew about you before he approached you."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

Nathaniel finally spoke.

"Emily."

But I stepped back.

"You knew me?"

"Not personally."

"Then how?"

He hesitated.

And that hesitation hurt.

"I saw your work."

My voice became quieter.

"Before the debt?"

"Yes."

"How long?"

Nathaniel looked at me.

"Months."

The truth felt heavier than I expected.

"Then this was never just a business decision."

"No."

His answer was immediate.

And that somehow hurt more.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I thought you would believe I manipulated you."

"And did you?"

"No."

His voice became firm.

"Never."

I looked at him.

The man I had slowly fallen for.

The man who had hidden parts of himself because he was afraid.

"You should have trusted me."

His expression broke slightly.

"I know."

For the first time, Nathaniel Crane had no plan.

No strategy.

No calculated response.

Only honesty.

And that was exactly what defeated Adrian.

Because Adrian expected Nathaniel to choose power.

To choose control.

To choose the empire.

But he didn't understand something.

Nathaniel had already changed.

The man who once believed everything could be bought had learned something money couldn't create.

Trust.

Love.

Family.

Nathaniel turned toward Adrian.

"You want the company?"

Adrian smiled.

"Finally."

"Take it."

Everyone became silent.

I looked at Nathaniel.

"What?"

He continued.

"Take the assets. Take the accounts. Take everything."

Adrian frowned.

"What are you doing?"

"Choosing."

Nathaniel looked at me.

Not at the empire.

Not at the documents.

At me.

"I'm choosing the one thing I cannot rebuild."

Adrian's expression changed.

Because he finally understood.

The man who had spent years chasing power...

No longer cared about losing it.

Security moved in moments later.

Nathaniel had planned for this.

Evidence.

Recordings.

Everything.

Adrian's mistake was believing Nathaniel was still the same man he used to be.

He wasn't.

The old Nathaniel Crane protected his empire.

The new Nathaniel Crane protected the people he loved.

Outside the warehouse, rain began falling.

The same kind of rain as the night on our honeymoon.

Nathaniel stood beside me.

Exhausted.

Finally honest.

"I should have told you everything."

I looked at him.

"Yes."

A small, sad smile appeared.

"I know."

I looked at the man who had once been a stranger.

The man I married because I had no choice.

The man who became the one person I didn't want to lose.

"I was angry."

"I know."

"But I also know why you did it."

His eyes lifted.

"Why?"

"Because you were afraid."

Nathaniel said nothing.

Because it was true.

"I spent my life thinking needing someone was weakness."

His voice was quiet.

"You changed that."

I smiled slightly.

"No."

I looked at him.

"You changed it yourself."

For a moment, we just stood there.

No cameras.

No contract.

No pretending.

Just us.

And I realized something.

The contract that brought us together had almost destroyed us.

But it had also given us something neither of us expected.

A reason to stay.

Nathaniel reached for my hand.

This time, he didn't hesitate.

And I didn't pull away.

Because somewhere between the beginning and the end of our agreement...

The contract had stopped being the reason we were together.

Love had taken its place.

But neither of us knew the final challenge was still waiting.

Because winning against Adrian was only the beginning.

The hardest choice was still ahead.

May you like

The choice between the life Nathaniel built...

And the life we could build together.
