Chapter 6 - The Past Elliot Tried to Bury

Elliot Grayson had spent years believing the past was something you escaped.
He built his company on that idea.
Every mistake became a lesson.
Every failure became motivation.
Every painful moment became another reason to work harder.
That was how successful people survived.
They moved forward.
They adapted.
They refused to look back.
At least, that was what Elliot told himself.
But the truth was different.
The past was not something he escaped.
It was something he carried.
And no matter how high he climbed, no amount of money could make it disappear.
For the first time in years, Elliot began allowing himself to remember.
Not just the accident.
Not just the hospital calls.
Not just the moment when his world collapsed.
He remembered Maggie before everything went wrong.
The woman who danced barefoot in the kitchen.
The woman who argued with him about taking vacations.
The woman who always noticed when someone needed help before they asked.
The woman who believed Elliot was capable of becoming someone better than the man he was becoming.
And that was the memory that hurt the most.
Because Maggie had believed in him.
Even when he had stopped believing in himself.
A week passed after Elliot began visiting the community center.
He did not announce it.
He did not create a press release.
He did not attach the Grayson name to it.
For once, he simply showed up.
And that confused everyone.
Especially Victoria.
“Mr. Grayson.”
Elliot looked up from the documents on his desk.
“Yes?”
She placed a folder down.
“The board members are asking questions.”
“About what?”
“Your schedule.”
Elliot frowned.
“My schedule?”
“Yes.”
Victoria opened her tablet.
“You canceled three executive dinners.”
“Correct.”
“You postponed two investor meetings.”
“Correct.”
“And you spent your afternoon organizing food donations at a community center.”
Elliot looked at her.
“Is there a problem?”
Victoria hesitated.
“No.”
“But?”
She smiled slightly.
“But it’s unusual.”
Elliot leaned back.
“Unusual doesn’t mean wrong.”
Victoria looked at him.
That sentence alone told her how much he had changed.
The old Elliot would have asked what people thought.
The old Elliot would have worried about appearances.
The old Elliot would have immediately corrected anything that looked inefficient.
But this Elliot seemed different.
Still powerful.
Still intelligent.
Still focused.
But no longer empty.
“I met someone,” Elliot said.
Victoria looked surprised.
“Clara?”
He nodded.
“She reminds me of something I forgot.”
“What?”
“That people are not problems to solve.”
Victoria became quiet.
Because that was the most human thing she had ever heard him say.
But while Elliot was learning how to open his heart again, someone else was watching.
Someone who did not understand the change.
Someone who believed the old Elliot was the only Elliot that mattered.
Richard Vale.
The chief financial officer of Grayson Harbor Group.
Richard had worked beside Elliot for fifteen years.
He was brilliant.
Ambitious.
And very good at hiding his intentions behind polite smiles.
When Maggie was alive, she never trusted him.
Elliot remembered that now.
One evening, after a business dinner, Maggie had looked at him seriously.
“Be careful with Richard.”
Elliot had laughed.
“Richard has been with me for years.”
“That doesn’t mean he cares about you.”
“He’s loyal.”
Maggie had looked away.
“No.”
“What?”
“He’s loyal to what you built.”
At the time, Elliot had defended Richard.
Because that was what he always did.
He believed the best in people.
Until they gave him a reason not to.
Now, three years later, those words returned.
That Friday, Elliot received an unexpected call.
“Mr. Grayson?”
The voice belonged to an investigator he had hired privately.
“Yes.”
“I found something about the photograph.”
Elliot immediately became alert.
The photograph.
Maggie’s photograph.
The one that appeared on his desk.
“What did you find?”
A pause.
“Your wife left several documents before her death.”
Elliot stood.
“What kind of documents?”
“We’re not sure yet.”
“Not sure?”
“The files were hidden.”
His expression changed.
“Hidden?”
“Yes.”
The investigator lowered his voice.
“Mr. Grayson, there’s something else.”
“What?”
“Your wife was looking into financial irregularities inside your company before the accident.”
The room became silent.
Elliot felt like the air disappeared.
“No.”
The word came automatically.
“Maggie wouldn’t…”
He stopped.
Because he knew Maggie.
If she believed something was wrong, she investigated.
She never accused people without proof.
She never caused damage without reason.
“What kind of irregularities?”
“Money transfers. Internal accounts. Several transactions connected to senior executives.”
Elliot closed his eyes.
Richard.
The name appeared instantly.
But he refused to believe it.
Because believing it meant accepting something worse.
That while he was working late.
While he was missing dinners.
While he was chasing another achievement.
Someone close to him may have been hurting the people he loved.
“Where are the documents?”
“We’re trying to locate them.”
“No.”
Elliot grabbed his coat.
“Find them.”
“Mr. Grayson—”
“Whatever it costs.”
He paused.
“And don’t tell anyone.”
That night, Elliot went to Maggie’s room again.
This time, he was not searching for memories.
He was searching for answers.
He opened drawers.
Checked shelves.
Looked through old files.
Then he noticed something.
A small mark behind a bookshelf.
Something slightly different.
He moved the shelf.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
His heart began beating faster.
Inside was a small box.
He opened it.
A collection of documents.
Photographs.
Notes.
And one envelope.
His name was written on the front.
Elliot.
His hands shook.
He opened it.
Inside was a letter.
His wife’s handwriting.
The first line nearly broke him.
“My love, if you are reading this, it means I was right to be worried.”
Elliot sat down.
He continued reading.
“I don’t know what happened yet. I don’t want to believe the worst. I know you trust the people around you. Sometimes too much.”
His eyes moved across the page.
“But I need you to understand something.”
“Maggie’s handwriting became slightly uneven.”
“You built Grayson Harbor with your own hands. But somewhere along the way, people started protecting the company more than they protected you.”
Elliot swallowed.
The words felt like a conversation.
Like she was sitting beside him.
“I know you blame yourself for everything.”
A tear fell.
“But please don’t.”
He stopped.
Because that was exactly what he had done.
Every day.
Every hour.
Every moment.
“I need you to promise me one thing.”
Elliot held the letter tighter.
“Don’t let losing me make you lose yourself.”
The room became completely silent.
Outside, the city lights continued shining.
But Elliot did not see them.
He saw Maggie.
The woman who knew him better than anyone.
The woman who knew he would turn pain into punishment.
The woman who tried to protect him even after she was gone.
The next morning, Elliot arrived at the community center.
Clara immediately noticed something was different.
“You look tired.”
Elliot smiled faintly.
“That obvious?”
“Yes.”
He looked at her.
“You’re honest.”
“You need honest people.”
The words reminded him of Maggie.
Elliot looked away.
Clara noticed.
“What happened?”
For a moment, he considered lying.
The old Elliot would have.
He would have said everything was fine.
He would have changed the subject.
But he was tired of pretending.
“My wife knew something was wrong before she died.”
Clara became quiet.
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t know yet.”
He looked at the children playing nearby.
“But I think she was trying to protect me.”
Clara listened.
“She spent her last days worried about something happening to me.”
His voice became lower.
“And I wasn’t there.”
Clara stepped closer.
“Elliot.”
He looked at her.
“You can’t change what happened.”
“I know.”
“But you can decide what happens next.”
Those words sounded familiar.
Almost like Maggie.
But coming from Clara, they felt different.
Not like a reminder of the past.
Like permission to build a future.
Elliot looked at her.
“Why do you do that?”
“Do what?”
“Say the exact thing someone needs to hear.”
Clara smiled.
“I don’t.”
“Yes, you do.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I just listen.”
And Elliot realized something.
That was what he had been missing.
Not advice.
Not solutions.
Someone willing to listen.
Someone willing to sit beside him.
Someone who saw the man behind the fortune.
That evening, Elliot returned to Grayson Harbor Tower.
He walked into his office.
The same office where he had spent thousands of hours.
But this time, he was not thinking about expansion.
Not profits.
Not reputation.
He opened the documents Maggie had hidden.
And he began reading.
Because the past he tried to bury was finally coming back.
But this time, Elliot was not running from it.
This time, he was ready to face the truth.
No matter who it hurt.
No matter what it cost.
Because Maggie had spent her final days protecting him.
May you like
And now…
He was going to protect everything she loved.
