Chapter 7 - The Secret That My Mother Sacrificed Everything To Protect

The lights went out.

For one second, nobody moved.

The entire office disappeared into darkness.

I heard someone gasp.

I heard footsteps.

Then I felt a hand grab mine.

Nathaniel.

"Ruby."

His voice was close.

Calm.

But I could hear the fear underneath.

"Stay with me."

I held onto his hand.

Not because I trusted him completely.

Not because I understood what was happening.

But because in that moment, the dark room felt like the only place in the world where someone was trying to keep me safe.

Emergency lights turned on seconds later.

The office was covered in a dim red glow.

Nathaniel immediately looked toward the security cameras.

The screens were black.

The woman with the tablet checked the system.

"Someone disabled the network."

Nathaniel's face hardened.

"From where?"

She typed quickly.

Then stopped.

Her expression changed.

"Mr. Graves..."

"What?"

"The shutdown command came from inside the archive room."

Everyone became silent.

Because the archive room was supposed to be locked.

And someone was inside.

Nathaniel looked at the security guards.

"Get there now."

The guards moved immediately.

But before they reached the door, the elevator outside made a sound.

A soft chime.

Everyone turned.

The doors opened.

Nobody was there.

Only a small package sitting on the floor.

Nathaniel stared at it.

"No."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He didn't answer.

Because he recognized the handwriting on top.

I could see it from where I stood.

Three words.

For Ruby Parker.

My heart stopped.

Nathaniel walked toward it slowly.

"Don't touch it," the security guard said.

But Nathaniel ignored him.

He picked it up.

Not quickly.

Not carelessly.

Like he was afraid of what he would find.

He opened the package.

Inside was a small silver bracelet.

I froze.

Because I knew that bracelet.

I was wearing the same one.

The bracelet my mother gave me when I was little.

The bracelet she told me never to remove.

Nathaniel stared at it.

His hands shook.

Then he found the letter beneath it.

He opened it.

The paper looked old.

Like it had been written years ago.

He read the first line.

And his expression broke.

"What does it say?"

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Nathaniel."

For the first time, I called him by his name.

Not Mr. Graves.

Not the billionaire.

Just Nathaniel.

He looked at me.

Then handed me the letter.

My hands trembled as I unfolded it.

The handwriting was familiar.

Because I had seen it thousands of times.

My mother's handwriting.

Ruby,

If you are reading this, it means the truth finally found you.

I stopped.

My eyes blurred.

The room disappeared.

There was only my mother's handwriting.

I kept reading.

I wanted to tell you everything.

I wanted you to know where you came from.

I wanted you to know who your father was.

But every time I tried, someone reminded me what would happen if I spoke.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

Nathaniel stood beside me.

Silent.

The letter continued.

Nathaniel never abandoned us.

He never forgot you.

He never stopped searching.

The tears came before I could stop them.

Because all my life, I thought I had been missing something.

A father.

A piece of myself.

A reason why my mother always looked sad when she thought I wasn't watching.

And now I knew.

There had been someone looking for us.

Someone who never found us.

The next sentence made Nathaniel close his eyes.

The person who separated us was someone we trusted.

Someone close enough to destroy everything.

Someone who knew every weakness we had.

I looked at Nathaniel.

"Richard."

He nodded.

Slowly.

The letter continued.

I discovered what Richard Vale had done before anyone else.

He knew Nathaniel survived.

He knew about Ruby.

He knew everything.

But he wanted control of Graves Energy.

He wanted Nathaniel gone.

And he wanted Ruby hidden because she was the only person who could inherit what Nathaniel built.

I looked up.

"Inherit?"

Nathaniel took the letter.

He read the next part.

His face changed.

Because he found something he didn't expect.

The letter said:

Ruby was the reason Richard couldn't win.

Because legally, she was the only person who could expose what happened.

She was proof that Nathaniel Graves had a family.

She was proof that Richard's plan failed.

I stared at Nathaniel.

"So he tried to hide me?"

Nathaniel looked angry.

"No."

His voice was firm.

"He tried to erase you."

The words were terrifying.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The eviction notice.

The wallet.

The cameras.

The strange messages.

Someone hadn't wanted me to discover the truth.

Someone had wanted the truth to discover me.

A security alarm suddenly sounded.

The woman with the tablet looked at the screen.

"He's moving."

Nathaniel turned.

"Who?"

Her face became pale.

"Richard."

The security cameras returned.

A hallway appeared.

The archive room.

The door was open.

Richard Vale stood inside.

Holding a folder.

Nathaniel walked toward the screen.

"Richard."

The camera microphone picked up his voice.

Richard smiled.

Even through the screen, I could see it.

A calm smile.

A person who believed he had already won.

"You finally found her."

Nathaniel stared.

"Where is Emily?"

Richard tilted his head.

"Still protecting you after all these years."

My heart jumped.

"She's alive?"

Richard looked toward the camera.

Then smiled.

"Of course she is."

Everyone froze.

Nathaniel stepped closer.

"Where?"

Richard lifted the folder.

"You want the truth?"

Nathaniel didn't answer.

Richard continued.

"The truth is that Emily knew exactly what would happen."

He opened the folder.

"She knew you would come looking."

Nathaniel's expression changed.

"Why are you showing me this?"

Richard smiled.

"Because I want you to understand something."

He looked directly into the camera.

"I didn't take Emily away from you."

A pause.

"I saved her from you."

Nathaniel's face hardened.

"You're lying."

Richard laughed softly.

"Then ask her yourself."

The screen changed.

Another camera appeared.

A small room.

A chair.

And someone sitting inside.

My breath stopped.

Because I recognized the person immediately.

My mother.

Emily Parker.

She looked older.

Tired.

But alive.

Nathaniel moved closer to the screen.

"Emily..."

My mother slowly lifted her head.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Ruby."

I covered my mouth.

"Mom."

For the first time in twelve years, Nathaniel and Emily saw each other.

But there was no happiness.

No celebration.

Only pain.

Because Richard stood behind her.

And he placed a hand on the chair.

"Before you say anything..."

He looked at Nathaniel.

"There is one thing you need to know."

Nathaniel stared at him.

"What?"

Richard smiled.

"The reason Emily hid Ruby wasn't because she was afraid of me."

The room went silent.

My mother looked terrified.

Richard leaned closer to the camera.

"She was afraid of what Nathaniel would do when he learned the truth about Ruby's birth."

Nathaniel froze.

I froze.

My mother whispered:

"Richard, don't."

But he smiled.

Because he knew he had found the final secret.

The secret my mother had protected for twelve years.

Then Richard pressed a button on the desk beside him.

A file appeared on the screen.

A file with my name.

RUBY PARKER.

May you like

And underneath it...

A different last name.
