Chapter 6 - The Story Lily Never Finished
Evan's scream brought the house alive.
Security locked every gate.
Grace ran through the halls calling Lily's name.
Then a guard reported the east service door had been opened seven minutes earlier.
Camera footage showed Lily walking outside.
Alone.
Then a man appeared.
Samuel Voss.
Grace collapsed.
Evan caught her.
“We're getting her back.”
Police and federal teams mobilized.
A vehicle was identified.
Voss drove north.
Evan remembered Caroline's crash site.
The route matched.
Reed realized Voss was heading toward an abandoned Mercer medical retreat once owned by Charles.
Teams converged.
Evan insisted on going.
At the retreat, Voss held Lily inside a treatment room.
He wasn't interested in ransom.
He wanted Caroline's evidence.
Evan brought copies.
Voss demanded the originals.
Lily sat quietly in a chair, clutching her pajama sleeve.
When Evan saw her through the doorway, rage nearly overwhelmed him.
But Lily looked at him.
“Mr. Mercer?”
“Yes, sweetheart.”
“You forgot Rabbit.”
The absurd sentence almost broke him.
Voss ordered Evan inside.
Evan obeyed.
He placed the case on the floor.
Voss reached for it.
Lily suddenly slid from the chair and ran.
Voss grabbed at her.
Evan moved between them.
Federal agents stormed the room.
Seconds later Voss was on the floor in handcuffs.
Grace reached Lily first.
Mother and daughter collapsed into each other's arms.
Evan stood nearby, shaking.
Then Lily escaped Grace's embrace and ran to him.
He lifted her.
This time he knew exactly where his hands belonged.
“You came,” she whispered.
“Always.”
Voss was charged.
Victor cooperated.
Thomas was cleared.
Aaron Pike surrendered and agreed to testify about his role in suppressing evidence.
Caroline's death investigation reopened.
Daniel Pike's death did too.
Months passed.
Evan's insomnia disappeared.
Not immediately.
Some nights were still difficult.
But he stopped fearing them.
Grace remained at the estate, though her relationship with Evan changed.
She was no longer invisible staff.
They talked.
They ate together sometimes.
Lily continued bedtime stories.
One evening she fell asleep halfway through one herself.
Evan carried her to Grace.
Grace smiled.
“You're getting good at this.”
“At carrying sleeping children?”
“At letting people need you.”
Their eyes held.
Something quiet passed between them.
Neither named it.
Not yet.
Six months after Voss's arrest, Rebecca arrived with news.
Daniel Pike's case had been reopened.
Investigators found evidence that his death was staged.
Grace would finally learn what happened to her husband.
But Rebecca carried another envelope.
This one had been discovered in a safe-deposit box registered to Caroline.
It was addressed to Grace Bennett.
Grace stared at it.
“She didn't know me.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“Apparently she did.”
Grace opened the envelope.
A photograph slipped out.
Caroline.
Daniel.
And Grace.
All three were standing together.
Grace went completely still.
“I don't remember this.”
On the back, Caroline had written a date.
Five years earlier.
Before Lily was born.
Grace turned the photograph over again.

Then she whispered a name Evan had never heard before.
And Rebecca's face changed.
