Chapter 3 - The Billionaire Who Found Me When I Had Nothing

The name written on the back of the photograph kept repeating in my mind.
Ethan Blackwell.
I stared at those two words for almost an hour.
I had heard that name before.
Everyone in Austin had.
Ethan Blackwell wasn't just wealthy.
He was the kind of person whose name appeared in business magazines, charity events, and financial news.
A billionaire.
The founder of Blackwell Global Holdings.
A man known for buying struggling companies and turning them into billion-dollar businesses.
But why would his name be connected to Trevor?
Why would a billionaire have a photograph of the worst day of my life?
And why did someone write that Trevor was never the mastermind?
I looked down at Lily sleeping peacefully in my arms.
She had no idea that her mother was sitting on the edge of a mystery that could change everything.
For months, I had convinced myself that Trevor and Jessica were the only people who hurt me.
I thought they were selfish.
Cruel.
Heartless.
But the note suggested something else.
Someone had been watching.
Someone had known.
Someone had allowed it to happen.
And that scared me more than the betrayal itself.
The next morning, I searched Ethan Blackwell’s name online.
The first thing I saw was a picture of him standing beside a group of children at a charity event.
He looked nothing like Trevor.
Trevor always wanted people to notice him.
Every photo of him was carefully planned.
Every appearance was about power.
Ethan looked different.
Older.
More reserved.
His silver hair was neatly combed.
His expression was serious.
But there was something in his eyes that surprised me.
Kindness.
I hated myself for noticing that.
Because after everything I had been through, I didn't want to trust another powerful man.
I had trusted Trevor.
Look where that got me.
I closed my laptop.
I picked up Lily.
"No more trusting people too easily," I whispered.
She smiled at me.
As if she didn't believe my promise.
Two days later, I received another envelope.
This time, it wasn't anonymous.
The name was printed clearly.
Blackwell Global Holdings.
My first instinct was fear.
I almost threw it away.
But then I saw what was inside.
A letter.
And a business card.
The letter contained only three sentences.
Amanda Hayes,
You deserve to know the truth about what happened to you.
Meet me tomorrow at 2 PM.
— Ethan Blackwell
I read it again.
Then again.
I didn't know why, but my hands started shaking.
I had spent months trying to rebuild my life.
Trying to forget Trevor.
Trying to move forward.
Now a billionaire was telling me the past wasn't finished.
I didn't want answers.
Answers meant opening doors I had worked hard to close.
But another part of me needed to know.
Because if someone had been involved in destroying my family, I had the right to find out who.
The next day, I arrived at Blackwell Tower.
I almost turned around three times before entering.
The building was enormous.
Glass walls.
Marble floors.
People in expensive suits moving quickly through the lobby.
I felt completely out of place.
I was wearing a simple blouse and black pants.
My old designer clothes were gone.
My expensive handbags were gone.
My life had become much smaller.
But somehow, walking into that building, I didn't feel embarrassed.
I felt determined.
The receptionist looked up.
"Can I help you?"
"I'm here to see Ethan Blackwell."
Her expression changed slightly.
"Ms. Hayes?"
I nodded.
She immediately stood.
"Mr. Blackwell is expecting you."
That surprised me.
Not because he knew my name.
Because she knew who I was.
I followed her into a private elevator.
When the doors opened, I stepped into an office that looked nothing like Trevor's.
Trevor's office was designed to impress people.
This one was designed to work.
Books lined the walls.
Documents covered the desk.
There were pictures of charity projects, schools, and hospitals.
Then I saw him.
Ethan Blackwell.
He stood near the window.
Exactly like the picture.
Silver hair.
Dark suit.
Calm expression.
But when he turned toward me, his face softened.
"Amanda Hayes."
I didn't sit.
"Why do you know me?"
He studied me for a moment.
"Because I've been trying to find the right time to talk to you."
"Trying?"
I laughed quietly.
"You mean after my husband left me? After my best friend betrayed me? After I lost everything?"
His expression changed.
Not anger.
Guilt.
"I know what happened."
"Then you know you were too late."
The words came out sharper than I intended.
But I didn't regret them.
Ethan nodded slowly.
"You're right."
That answer surprised me.
Most wealthy men weren't used to admitting mistakes.
"I should have come sooner."
I crossed my arms.
"Why didn't you?"
He walked toward his desk and picked up a folder.
"Because I needed proof."
He placed it in front of me.
I didn't touch it.
"What is that?"
"Information about Trevor Hayes."
My heart tightened.
"I don't want money."
"I know."
"I don't want revenge."
"I know that too."
"Then what do you think I want?"
Ethan looked directly at me.
"The truth."
Silence filled the room.
Finally, I opened the folder.
The first page was a financial record.
The second was a company document.
The third was a photograph.
I recognized Trevor immediately.
But the person standing beside him wasn't Jessica.
It was someone else.
Someone I had never seen.
"What is this?"
Ethan sat down.
"Trevor wasn't just cheating on you."
I looked at him.
"He was being controlled."
I almost laughed.
"Controlled?"
"Amanda, Trevor's real estate empire was built on investments from a private group."
"Okay."
"And that group wasn't supposed to exist."
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
"It means someone was using Trevor."
I looked back at the photograph.
"Who?"
Ethan didn't answer immediately.
That scared me.
Because powerful people didn't hesitate unless the answer was dangerous.
Finally, he said:
"The person who wanted your marriage destroyed."
My breathing slowed.
"And why?"
Ethan looked at Lily's photo sitting on my phone.
Then back at me.
"Because your child was never part of Trevor's plan."
My stomach tightened.
"What are you saying?"
Before he could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
The color disappeared from his face.
"What?"
A pause.
Then another.
"Are you sure?"
I watched his expression change.
The calm billionaire disappeared.
For the first time, Ethan Blackwell looked afraid.
He ended the call.
I stood up.
"What happened?"
He didn't answer.
He walked toward the window.
"Amanda..."
His voice was quieter.
"You need to leave."
I froze.
"Why?"
Because the next words he said changed everything.
"Because the person who sent you that photograph just entered this building."
My heart stopped.
"Who?"
Ethan looked toward the office door.
The handle moved slowly.
Someone was outside.
Someone who shouldn't have been there.
May you like
Then the door opened.
And I heard Trevor's voice say my name...
