Chapter 6 - The Man at the Lake House

Adrian refused to let Lena go alone.
This time she did not argue.
They drove to Wisconsin with federal agents following several miles behind.
The lake house looked exactly as Lena remembered.
Small porch.
Green shutters.
Stone chimney.
The same wooden swing where Evelyn once read her stories.
One light burned upstairs.
Lena stepped from the car.
Adrian touched her arm.
“Stay behind me.”
“This is my past.”
“That doesn’t make bullets less real.”
She almost smiled.
Almost.
They entered.
The house smelled like cedar and dust.
On the living-room wall hung photographs.
Dozens.
Lena as a child.
Evelyn.
Daniel Reed.
Adrian stopped beside one image.
Daniel stood with a man Adrian recognized.
Michael Vale.
Lena whispered, “They knew each other.”
A voice answered from the hallway.
“Better than anyone realized.”
A man stepped into view.
Late sixties.
Thin.
Gray beard.
Walking cane.
Adrian stared.
“Uncle Michael.”
Michael Vale smiled.
“You grew up.”
Adrian looked like he had seen the dead.
“You’re alive.”
“Obviously.”
Lena stepped forward.
“You sent the message.”
“Yes.”
“You said my father was waiting.”
“He is.”
Lena looked around.
“Where?”
Michael touched his chest.
“Here.”
Silence.
Adrian’s face hardened.
“You’re claiming you’re Lena’s father?”
Michael nodded.
Lena felt dizzy.
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
“Daniel Reed was my father.”
“Daniel believed he was.”
Lena recoiled.
Michael continued.
“Evelyn wanted him to believe it.”
“Why?”
“To protect you.”
“That excuse is getting old.”
Michael almost smiled.
“You sound like her.”
Adrian stepped between them.
“Explain everything.”
Michael sat.
Twenty-nine years earlier, he had met Evelyn while working for Harrison.
He fell in love.
Evelyn did not.
One night, after Harrison discovered Evelyn had copied financial records, Michael warned her.
They grew close during the crisis.
According to Michael, their relationship lasted briefly.
Then Evelyn left.
Weeks later, she began seeing Daniel.
“She never told me she was pregnant,” Michael said.
Lena stared.
“When did you learn?”
“After you were born.”
“Did you take a DNA test?”
“No.”
“Then you don’t know.”
Michael nodded.
“Fair.”
Adrian asked, “What happened to Daniel?”
Michael’s expression darkened.
“Harrison ordered me to retrieve the evidence.”
“Did you kill him?”
“No.”
“Did you find him at the motel?”
“Yes.”
Celeste had been telling the truth.
Michael arrived after Daniel had been beaten.
Daniel was dying.
Michael claimed he tried to help.
“Why didn’t you call an ambulance?” Lena demanded.
“Because Daniel begged me not to.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No.”
Michael looked exhausted.
“But it’s true.”
Daniel gave Michael a package containing copies of the financial evidence and the safe-deposit key.
Then he died.
“What did you do with his body?” Lena asked.
“I buried him.”
Lena slapped him.
The sound cracked through the room.
Michael did not react.
“You stole my father’s grave.”
“Yes.”
“You stole twenty years from my mother.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
He gave the location.
Federal agents outside immediately called local authorities.
Adrian asked, “Why disappear?”
“Because Harrison planned to kill Evelyn next.”
Michael had staged the plane crash.
He created a false identity.
He stayed hidden.
“Coward,” Adrian said.
Michael nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why come back now?”
“Because Evelyn died.”
Lena’s eyes narrowed.
“You knew?”
“I watched from a distance.”
“You watched her die?”
Michael looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
“And did nothing?”
“I paid medical bills anonymously.”
Lena laughed bitterly.
“She still had debt.”
“Harrison’s old network intercepted some transfers.”
“Who?”
Michael looked toward Chicago.
“People who benefited from the stolen pension funds.”
Adrian understood.
“Laurent executives?”
“Some.”
“Celeste?”
“No.”
“Victor?”
“No.”
“Who?”
Michael gave him three names.
One was a Vale Meridian board member.
Adrian went pale.
“Richard Sloan.”
Michael nodded.
Adrian’s oldest advisor.
The man who had helped him build Vale Meridian.
The man Adrian trusted more than anyone outside his family.
Michael continued.
“Sloan worked for Harrison first.”
Adrian sat slowly.
“He funded me.”
“He monitored you.”
“He helped me expose my father.”
“He helped you expose enough to remove Harrison without exposing himself.”
Lena remembered the stolen trust.
“Did Sloan forge my mother’s signature?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He needed Evelyn’s investment in Adrian’s first company hidden.”
Adrian frowned.
“Why?”
Michael looked at him.
“Because Evelyn’s twelve thousand dollars wasn’t the real value.”
He opened a safe beneath the stairs.
Inside were original company documents.
Adrian read them.
His hands began shaking.
Evelyn had not merely loaned Adrian money.
She had been issued a forty-percent founding stake in his first business.
That company later became the foundation of Vale Meridian.
Her shares had been secretly diluted, transferred, and hidden through shell entities.
Forty-seven million dollars was only a fraction.
Michael looked at Lena.
“Your mother’s estate is entitled to approximately one point six billion dollars.”
Lena stared.
Adrian did not hesitate.
“Then that’s what she gets.”
Michael looked surprised.
Adrian continued.
“Every dollar.”
Lena shook her head.
“I don’t want your money.”
“It isn’t mine.”
“It became yours.”
“It was stolen before it became mine.”
She stared at him.
He meant it.
Michael said softly, “Evelyn was right about you.”
Adrian turned.
“Don’t.”
Michael fell silent.
Lena asked the question that mattered most.
“The key.”
Michael reached beneath his shirt.
A chain hung around his neck.
On it was a brass key.
“The safe-deposit box contains Daniel’s original evidence.”
He handed it to Lena.
“And a letter.”
“From Mom?”
“No.”
“Daniel?”
Michael nodded.
Lena took the key.
Michael continued.
“There is also a DNA report.”
Lena froze.
“What?”
“Evelyn tested your paternity when you were two.”
Her hands shook.
“You know who my father is.”
Michael looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Tell me.”
He did not.
“Tell me!”
Michael’s eyes filled.
“The answer is in the box.”
Suddenly headlights flooded the windows.
Adrian’s security radio erupted.
“Movement outside.”
A gunshot shattered the front window.
Adrian pulled Lena to the floor.
Federal agents shouted.
More shots.
Michael collapsed beside the stairs.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Lena screamed.
Adrian dragged her behind the fireplace.
Outside, agents surrounded a black SUV.
Its driver tried to escape.
He was pulled from the vehicle.
Adrian looked through the broken window.
His face changed.
Lena followed his gaze.
The arrested man was Richard Sloan.
Adrian’s trusted advisor.
Sloan looked toward the house.
Then smiled.
Even in handcuffs.
And shouted one sentence.
“Ask Michael what really happened to Daniel Reed!”
Inside the house, Michael opened his eyes.
May you like
He looked at Lena.
And whispered, “Daniel didn’t die at the motel.”
