Chapter 2 - The Woman Everyone Hated... Until She Spoke

The ballroom remained frozen.
No music.
No applause.
No conversations.
Only the sound of shattered crystal rolling across the marble floor.
Ethan stared at Victoria as if the room had disappeared.
"What... did you just say?" he whispered.
Victoria held the microphone at her side.
"I asked you a simple question."
She looked him straight in the eyes.
"Tell everyone who the father is."
Across the room, Sophia's hands began to tremble.
Several executives exchanged nervous glances.
Someone quietly lowered a phone beneath the table and pressed Record.
Ethan forced a laugh.
"Honey... this isn't funny."
"No," Victoria replied calmly. "It stopped being funny six months ago."
His smile vanished.
"Victoria..."
"Say it."
She handed him the microphone.
"You've spent years giving speeches about integrity."
She took one slow step closer.
"So tonight... tell the truth."
The silence became unbearable.
Finally Ethan grabbed the microphone.
"My wife is emotional."
A few awkward laughs echoed through the room.
"She's misunderstood a business relationship—"
"Business?"
Victoria interrupted.
"Should I describe the kiss in the underground parking garage?"
Every laugh died instantly.
Sophia closed her eyes.
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"You followed me?"
"I forgot my purse."
"You invaded my privacy."
Victoria actually smiled.
"So that's your defense?"
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
She continued.
"I waited three nights."
"I hoped you would come home."
"I hoped you'd tell me yourself."
"I even prayed I was wrong."
Her voice never rose.
That frightened people more than screaming ever could.
Instead of looking at Ethan, she turned toward the audience.
"I've loved this man since I was twenty-four."
"I stood beside him when our company had one office."
"I mortgaged the only house my parents left me so he could save his first business."
"I missed birthdays."
"I buried my mother alone because he was closing a deal overseas."
"I believed every sacrifice meant something."
Several older couples lowered their heads.
An elderly investor quietly removed his glasses to wipe away tears.
Victoria looked back at Ethan.
"And after fifteen years..."
"You couldn't even respect me enough to tell me the truth."
Sophia suddenly stepped forward.
"This isn't her fault."
Every head turned.
She looked terrified.
"I never wanted this."
Ethan snapped.
"Sophia, don't say another word."
"No."
For the first time, she looked directly at him.
"I'm done protecting you."
His face turned pale.
Victoria watched silently.
Sophia swallowed hard.
"When I found out he was married..."
"I tried to resign."
Gasps spread across the ballroom.
Sophia continued, tears filling her eyes.
"He told me they were already separated."
"He promised the divorce papers were being prepared."
Victoria's expression did not change.
She simply asked,
"Did you believe him?"
Sophia nodded once.
"I did."
"And the baby?"
Sophia instinctively placed a trembling hand over her stomach.
"I only found out two weeks ago."
The ballroom erupted.
"What?"
"She's pregnant?"
"Oh my God..."
Phones rose into the air.
Someone whispered,
"This is going to destroy Hawthorne Group."
Ethan finally exploded.
"STOP RECORDING!"
His voice echoed through the ballroom.
Security guards hesitated.
No one moved.
The board of directors remained seated.
None of them wanted to be the first person to defend him.
Victoria looked around the room.
For years she had feared this moment.
Now...
She felt strangely free.
She slipped her wedding ring from her finger.
Fifteen years.
One simple movement.
One small circle of gold.
She held it between two fingers.
Ethan's breathing became uneven.
"Victoria..."
His voice cracked for the first time that night.
"Please."
"Let's go home."
"We can fix this."
She looked at the ring.
Then at the man she had once trusted more than herself.
"You're right."
"We are going home."
Hope flashed across Ethan's face.
Until she finished the sentence.
"...to tell our children why their father won't be living there anymore."
She gently placed the wedding ring on the podium.
The tiny sound of gold touching wood echoed through the silent ballroom.
No shouting.
No drama.
Just one quiet decision...
...that ended fifteen years of marriage.
As Victoria turned toward the exit, Ethan reached out and grabbed her wrist.
"Don't walk away."
She slowly looked down at his hand.
Then back into his eyes.
"Take your hand off me."
He didn't.
The ballroom held its breath.
Victoria spoke only six words.
"If you don't..."
"...I'll tell them everything."
Ethan hesitated.
But before he could let go—
A deep voice came from the entrance.
"Too late."
Everyone turned.
An elderly man in a dark tailored suit stood in the doorway, surrounded by members of the Hawthorne Group's board.
He looked directly at Ethan.
May you like
"We already know everything."
