Chapter 2 - THE TWISTED TRUTH

Visual Hook (0-15s): A shadowy, high-tech interrogation room. Maya is crying hysterically while handcuffed to a metal table. Ethan slams a thick manila folder full of medical documents and bank statements onto the table right in front of her face. He leans down, his face inches from hers, and growls: "You told my son I was a monster for seven years... but you're the one who kidnapped him from his dead mother's arms!" Maya looks up, her eyes wide with psychotic fury, and sneers: "I saved his life from your twisted family!"

The media storm outside the Manhattan precinct was a circus of flashing blue lights, shouting journalists, and thousands of confused fans following the live updates on their phones. Inside the windowless interrogation room, the air was cold and smelled of stale coffee and industrial disinfectant.

Maya sat handcuffed to the heavy steel table. Her polished demeanor from the courtroom had completely disintegrated. Her hair was frantic, her clothes rumpled, and her eyes darted nervously toward the two-way mirror.

The door clicked open. Ethan walked in alone. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket anymore; his sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, revealing the strain in his muscles. He carried a heavy yellow folder and set it down with a loud, metallic thud.

"Where is Leo?" Maya demanded immediately, her voice shrill and desperate. "What did you do with my son?"

"He's in a private room down the hall with a child psychologist and a warm meal," Ethan said calmly, taking the chair opposite her. "And he's not your son, Maya. The DNA results came back twenty minutes ago."

Maya went rigid. "Tests can be faked. You have billions! You bought off the lab!"

"The DNA proved I am Leo's father with a 99.9% match," Ethan continued, ignoring her outburst. "And it proved that you have zero biological relation to him. None."

Ethan opened the folder, spreading out black-and-white printouts, financial ledgers, and old police reports.

"Seven years ago, my wife Clara was pregnant with our first child," Ethan said, his voice lowering to a somber, painful pitch. "She had a high-risk heart condition. We checked her into St. Jude's Private Clinic under total secrecy because my uncle—who was fighting me for control of Vance Enterprises—was looking for any weakness to remove me from the board."

Maya swallowed hard, her jaw tightening, but she remained silent.

"Clara died on the delivery table during an emergency C-section," Ethan said, pain flickering in his eyes before he forced it back down. "I was destroyed. I was in the waiting room, completely broken. But when the doctor went to bring me my newborn baby boy, the nursery was empty. A fire broke out in the records room five minutes later. The hospital was evacuated, and my son vanished."

Ethan leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table, staring directly into Maya’s soul.

"I thought my son died in that fire, Maya. I spent three years in deep depression, searching every human trafficking database on earth, thinking someone stole him to sell him. I never imagined that the quiet receptionist who worked in my own office building had taken him."

Maya suddenly burst into a bitter, high-pitched laugh. "You think you're the victim here, Ethan? You think you're a saint?" She leaned against her handcuffs, the metal clinking sharply against the table. "I took that baby because of you!"

"Explain," Ethan snapped.

"Your wife didn't die of a heart attack!" Maya screamed, her eyes widening with a terrifying, unhinged intensity. "Your uncle paid the chief of surgery fifty thousand dollars to alter her medication during labor! I heard them talking in the hallway outside the delivery room! They were going to let Clara die, and then they were going to make sure the baby 'didn't survive' either so your uncle could inherit the family trust!"

Ethan froze. The air in his lungs felt like ice. "What did you say?"

"I was just a nurse's assistant back then," Maya sobbed, real tears finally spilling over her cheeks, mixing with her messy mascara. "I was terrified! I knew if I went to the police, your powerful uncle would have me killed. So when the doctor walked out to tell you Clara was dead, I grabbed little Leo from the incubator, set fire to the filing cabinet to destroy the security footage, and ran out the back door!"

"If you were trying to save him," Ethan whispered, his voice trembling, "why didn't you bring him to me? Why did you disappear for seven years? Why did you teach him to hate me?"

Maya’s expression shifted instantly from desperate victim to cold, calculating hatred.

"Because I raised him!" she hissed. "I lived in filthy motels! I worked three cleaning jobs a day to buy his formula! I sacrificed my youth, my identity, my entire life to keep him alive while you sat in your gold penthouse playing billionaire! He became my son!"

"You brainwashed him!" Ethan shouted, slamming his hand down on the table. "You told him I was a monster who paid doctors to steal him! You made a seven-year-old boy carry the burden of your insane lie!"

"Because I knew eventually you'd find us!" Maya screamed back. "I knew your investigators were closing in! I knew if I brought this to court and made you look like a monster in front of the whole world, the judge would keep him away from you! The public would protect me! I did what any real mother would do!"

"You're sick," Ethan breathed, looking at her with genuine horror. "You didn't do this for Leo. You did it because you became obsessed with the fantasy that you were his savior. And when you ran out of money six months ago, you decided to use him as a weapon to blackmail my company."

Ethan stood up and pulled a digital voice recorder from his pocket. He pressed the stop button. A small red light blinked out.

Maya stared at the device, her face draining of color for the second time that day. "You... you recorded me?"

"This room is monitored by the District Attorney," Ethan said quietly. "Your confession about the kidnapping, the arson, and the extortion attempt is all on tape. You're going to prison for a very long time, Maya."

"No! No, please!" Maya shrieked, throw-ing herself forward against the table, her handcuffs rattling violently. "Ethan, please! Leo loves me! He doesn't know you! If you lock me up, you'll break his heart! He will hate you forever!"

Ethan paused at the door. He turned his head, looking back at the hysterical woman who had stolen seven years of his life, seven years of his son's smiles, steps, and words.

"He might hate me today," Ethan said softly. "But I will spend the rest of my life earning his love. Something you could never do with a lie."

Ethan stepped out into the hallway, leaving Maya’s echoing screams behind him. But as he walked down the dimly lit corridor toward the room where his son was waiting, his heart sank.

Through the small glass window of the child protection office, Ethan saw Leo sitting alone on a sofa. The boy was clutching a faded blue teddy bear—the only toy Maya had ever bought him—and crying hysterically, flinching every time a police officer walked by.

Ethan realized the hardest battle wasn't over. Winning in court was easy. Winning the heart of a traumatized boy who believed Ethan was the villain was going to be the hardest fight of his life.
