Chapter 6 - The Truth Eleanor Buried

The hidden door remained open.

Nobody spoke.

The light from beneath the mansion stretched across the marble floor like a warning.

Nathaniel stood in front of it.

The man who had never hesitated before.

The man who had walked into hostile boardrooms, faced enemies, and made impossible decisions without blinking.

But now he was frozen.

Because behind that door was everything he had spent two years trying to forget.

Eleanor.

The truth.

And possibly the reason his entire life had been built on a lie.

"Mr. Reed."

Marcus's voice was low.

"You shouldn't go alone."

Nathaniel didn't look back.

"She asked me to."

Richard Hale stood near the hallway entrance, watching silently.

That bothered me.

A person who had been hiding for years should have been nervous.

Desperate.

Afraid.

But Richard looked comfortable.

Like he had been waiting for this exact moment.

I held Lily's hand tighter.

Something about him made my instincts scream.

Nathaniel noticed.

He turned slightly.

"Mia."

I looked at him.

"Take the children upstairs."

I shook my head.

"No."

Everyone looked surprised.

Even Nathaniel.

But I didn't move.

"I won't let Lily be separated from whatever this is."

Nathaniel studied me.

For a moment, I thought he would order me to leave.

Instead, he looked at my daughter.

Then nodded.

"Stay close."

I followed him.

Marcus followed too.

Richard smiled.

"Still protecting strangers, Nathaniel?"

Nathaniel stopped.

"Still hiding behind dead people, Richard?"

The smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Nathaniel saw it too.

Then he stepped into the hidden room.

The air changed immediately.

It didn't feel like a secret room.

It felt like a place where someone had been waiting.

The walls were covered with photographs.

Documents.

Security files.

Old newspaper articles.

Eleanor had built an entire archive beneath the house.

And everything inside was connected.

Nathaniel walked slowly.

His eyes moved across the walls.

Then he stopped.

A photograph.

Eleanor.

Oliver.

And another baby.

Nathaniel reached for it.

His hand shook.

"Who is that?"

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus looked closer.

His face changed.

"Sir..."

Nathaniel turned.

"What?"

Marcus pointed at the picture.

"The bracelet."

Nathaniel looked down.

The baby in the photograph was wearing a hospital bracelet.

The same bracelet from the photograph upstairs.

The same date.

The same hospital.

My heart started racing.

Because I remembered.

That night.

The hospital hallway.

The nurse.

The crying baby.

The woman who came into my room.

Eleanor.

I had always thought she came because she needed help.

But maybe...

She came because she knew.

Nathaniel turned toward me.

"Mia."

I looked away.

He noticed.

"You remember something."

I swallowed.

"I remember Eleanor coming to my hospital room."

The room went silent.

"What did she say?"

I closed my eyes.

Trying to return to that night.

"I had just given birth to Lily."

My voice became quieter.

"I was exhausted. Scared. I didn't know what I was going to do."

Nathaniel listened.

"Then Eleanor came in."

"What did she want?"

I looked at the photograph.

"She asked me if I would protect someone."

Nathaniel's expression changed.

"Who?"

I looked at Oliver.

"I thought she meant Lily."

A pause.

"But now I think..."

I couldn't finish.

Because the answer felt impossible.

Nathaniel looked at Oliver.

His son.

The child he had raised.

The child he loved.

The child he would do anything for.

Then Eleanor's voice came from a hidden speaker.

Everyone jumped.

"You're finally remembering, Mia."

Nathaniel immediately looked around.

"Where is she?"

The speaker crackled.

"Not where you think."

Nathaniel grabbed the microphone attached to the wall.

"Eleanor, where are you?"

Silence.

Then:

"Somewhere I had to hide."

His breathing changed.

"You are alive."

A long pause.

"Yes."

Nobody moved.

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

A thousand emotions crossed his face.

Anger.

Relief.

Pain.

Confusion.

"Why didn't you come back?"

The speaker stayed silent.

Then Eleanor answered.

"Because someone wanted me dead."

Richard looked away.

Nathaniel noticed.

His eyes narrowed.

"Richard."

Richard said nothing.

Nathaniel turned toward him.

"You were involved."

Richard smiled slightly.

"You always were intelligent."

Marcus stepped forward.

"You're admitting it?"

Richard looked at him.

"I am admitting that Nathaniel never understood the game he was playing."

Nathaniel's voice became cold.

"What game?"

Richard looked around the room.

"This company. This family. This entire empire."

He pointed toward the documents.

"Eleanor discovered the truth before you did."

Nathaniel walked toward him.

"What truth?"

Richard smiled.

"The truth about who was controlling Reed Holdings."

Nathaniel looked confused.

"You?"

Richard laughed.

"No."

A pause.

"Someone much closer."

The room went quiet.

I felt Lily move closer to me.

Nathaniel looked at the documents again.

Then he noticed something.

A file.

With his name.

Nathaniel Reed.

He opened it.

Inside were financial records.

Messages.

Photographs.

Then his expression changed.

"What is this?"

Nobody answered.

He turned the pages faster.

His face became colder.

"This can't be real."

Marcus looked over his shoulder.

Then stopped.

Because the final page showed a signature.

A signature everyone recognized.

Nathaniel's.

But he had never signed it.

"Someone forged my name."

Richard looked at him.

"Exactly."

Nathaniel looked up.

"Who?"

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Lily.

And that made my blood freeze.

"Ask the little girl."

Nathaniel immediately stepped between Richard and Lily.

"Don't look at her."

Richard smiled.

"Why not?"

"Because she's a child."

"No."

Richard's voice became serious.

"She's the reason Eleanor risked everything."

I looked down at Lily.

My daughter looked scared now.

For the first time that night, she looked like a three-year-old.

Not someone carrying secrets.

Not someone connected to impossible things.

Just my little girl.

Nathaniel knelt beside her.

"Lily."

She looked at him.

"Do you remember the man who hurt your mommy?"

My heart stopped.

Nathaniel looked shocked.

"Mia?"

I shook my head.

"I didn't know."

Lily looked down.

Her small fingers twisted together.

Then she whispered:

"He wasn't trying to hurt Mommy."

Everyone froze.

"What do you mean?" Nathaniel asked.

Lily looked toward the hidden room.

"He was trying to take the baby."

Silence.

Nathaniel slowly stood.

"The baby?"

Lily nodded.

"Oliver."

The room went completely still.

Nathaniel looked at Oliver.

Then at Eleanor's files.

Then at Richard.

Richard's expression changed.

A small crack of fear appeared.

Nathaniel saw it.

"What did you do?"

Richard stepped back.

For the first time, he looked nervous.

"I was protecting the family."

"You kidnapped a child?"

"No."

Richard's voice became sharper.

"I protected him from the person who couldn't protect him."

Nathaniel's face hardened.

"Who?"

Richard looked at the speaker.

Then at the ceiling.

Like he was waiting.

Then Eleanor's voice came through one last time.

"Nathaniel."

Everyone looked up.

"Don't listen to Richard."

A pause.

Then her voice broke.

"Because the person who betrayed us is standing in this room."

Nathaniel looked around.

Marcus.

Richard.

Me.

Everyone.

Then the hidden computer screen beside the files suddenly turned on.

A live video appeared.

A woman was sitting in a dark room.

Her face slowly came into view.

And Nathaniel stepped back.

Because he recognized her.

It was someone he had trusted for years.

Someone who had been beside his family since before Oliver was born.

Someone who had just arrived at the mansion minutes earlier.

The screen cleared.

May you like

And Eleanor whispered:

"She was the one who ordered my death."
