Chapter 6 - The Secret Claire Tried To Hide

The recording started with silence.
For five seconds, there was nothing.
Just the sound of movement.
A chair being pulled.
A door closing.
Then I heard a voice.
Claire.
"I don't know if I can do this anymore."
My entire body froze.
I sat alone in my office, staring at the screen.
The woman speaking through my speakers sounded exhausted.
Broken.
Not like the Claire who stood silently behind her family while they threw my daughter outside.
Not like the Claire who handed me divorce papers without looking me in the eyes.
This was a different version of her.
A version I had never seen.
Then another voice answered.
Richard.
"You don't have a choice."
My heart sank.
I leaned closer.
The recording continued.
"I told you this was a mistake," Claire whispered.
Richard laughed.
"A mistake?"
There was anger in his voice.
"You think you can walk away now?"
"I never wanted this."
"You wanted the lifestyle."
Silence.
Then Claire said something that made my hands tighten.
"I wanted Daniel."
I stopped breathing.
Richard responded immediately.
"Don't lie to yourself."
The recording ended.
I sat there.
Completely still.
Because suddenly, everything had become more complicated.
Claire had betrayed me.
But maybe she hadn't done it the way I thought.
I replayed the recording three times.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I needed to understand.
The first time, I heard guilt.
The second time, I heard fear.
The third time, I heard something worse.
A person trapped.
Michael entered my office quietly.
He saw my expression.
"You heard it."
I nodded.
"Where did this come from?"
"Internal security found it while reviewing the data breach."
"Why was it recorded?"
Michael hesitated.
"Because someone was monitoring Richard's communications."
I looked at him.
"Who?"
"We don't know yet."
I looked back at the screen.
Claire's voice repeated in my mind.
"I wanted Daniel."
Eight years ago, those words would have meant everything.
Today, they were just another piece of a puzzle.
"Find out everything."
Michael nodded.
"About Claire?"
I looked at him.
"About everyone."
Because I had spent years believing I knew the people around me.
I was wrong.
That afternoon, I went to pick up Emma from school.
She ran toward me as usual.
But this time, she stopped halfway.
"Dad?"
I smiled.
"What's wrong?"
She looked at me carefully.
"Are you sad?"
Children were incredible.
They didn't need explanations.
They saw what adults tried to hide.
"A little."
"Because of Mom?"
I didn't answer immediately.
Emma looked down.
"I miss her."
The words hurt.
But I was glad she said them.
Because missing someone didn't mean forgetting what they did.
"I know."
"Can she come home?"
I looked at my daughter.
That was the hardest question.
Not because I didn't know the answer.
Because I wished it was different.
"I don't know."
Emma nodded.
Then she said:
"I think she misses us too."
I looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because when Grandma called me, she was crying."
I stopped.
"Grandma called you?"
Emma nodded.
"She said she was sorry."
I didn't know that.
And somehow, that hurt even more.
Because while I was building walls to protect myself...
My daughter was still searching for a way to heal.
That evening, Claire arrived.
Not with confidence.
Not with excuses.
Just Claire.
She stood outside my door.
"I know about the recording."
I looked at her.
"How?"
"Richard called me."
Of course he did.
"What did he say?"
She looked away.
"That you knew."
I stepped aside.
"Come in."
She entered slowly.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she said:
"I was going to tell you."
"When?"
She swallowed.
"I don't know."
I laughed quietly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because that answer was painfully familiar.
"That's the problem, Claire."
She looked at me.
"What?"
"You always know the right thing eventually."
I paused.
"But usually after the damage is already done."
She lowered her head.
"I deserve that."
I looked at her.
"Tell me the truth."
She nodded.
"About what?"
"Everything."
She sat down.
And for the first time in years, Claire Whitmore stopped protecting her family.
"My father knew about your company."
I stared at her.
"What?"
She looked ashamed.
"Not from the beginning."
"Then when?"
"About two years ago."
The room became quiet.
Two years.
For two years, they knew.
And they still treated me like I was nothing.
"How?"
"Someone at one of your partner companies mentioned your name during a dinner."
I closed my eyes.
"So Richard knew."
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
"And you?"
"I found out later."
I looked at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Tears appeared in her eyes.
"Because my father told me not to."
I waited.
"He said if you knew we knew, you would leave."
I almost smiled.
The irony was unbelievable.
"Leave?"
I repeated.
"He was afraid I would leave?"
Claire nodded.
"He thought you were testing us."
I looked away.
Maybe Richard had understood more than I realized.
Maybe he knew exactly what I was trying to discover.
And instead of proving he cared...
He proved the opposite.
"What happened after that?"
Claire took a deep breath.
"My father started using the connection."
"What connection?"
"Your company."
I looked at her.
"He told people inside his business that you were family."
My expression changed.
"He used my name?"
"Yes."
"And I didn't know."
"No."
I stood.
Because suddenly I understood.
The Whitmore family's success.
Their expansion.
Their confidence.
It wasn't because they respected me.
They were using me.
Even while insulting me.
"Then why divorce me?"
Claire looked at the floor.
"Because my father forced me."
I didn't respond.
"He said if I didn't leave, he would expose everything."
"What everything?"
She wiped her eyes.
"That you hid your identity."
I shook my head.
"That wasn't his secret to reveal."
"I know."
"No, Claire."
My voice became quieter.
"You don't understand."
She looked at me.
"The worst part wasn't them thinking I was poor."
I paused.
"The worst part was realizing they knew who I was and still treated me that way."
Claire broke down.
"I know."
"No."
I looked at her.
"You know now."
The difference mattered.
Later that night, I sat beside Emma while she slept.
I watched her breathing.
Peaceful.
Safe.
Everything I wanted for her.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Michael.
I opened it.
"Daniel, we found the person who leaked the company information."
I expected another Whitmore name.
Instead, I saw something else.
A name I never expected.
The message continued.
"It wasn't Claire."
I stared.
Then another line appeared.
"It was Richard's son."
I read it again.
Richard's son.
The same person who laughed when Emma was pushed outside.
The same person who stood beside his father believing they were untouchable.
But why?
I called Michael immediately.
"Tell me everything."
His voice was serious.
"He wasn't trying to hurt you."
"Then what was he doing?"
A pause.
"He was trying to expose his father."
I sat back.
"What?"
"Daniel, there's more."
I waited.
"Richard has been hiding financial problems for years."
The room became silent.
"How bad?"
"Bad enough that if people find out, Whitmore Industries collapses."
I looked toward the dark window.
Everything was changing.
The people I thought were enemies.
The people I thought were innocent.
Nothing was simple anymore.
Michael continued.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"He wants to meet you."
"Who?"
"Richard's son."
I looked at Emma sleeping peacefully.
Then at the city outside.
For years, I believed I was fighting against a family that hated me.
Now I realized something else.
May you like
I might have been fighting against a secret they were all trapped inside.
And the truth was about to become much bigger than my divorce.
