Chapter 8 - The Man Who Followed Her Into The Darkness

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

The cave held its breath.

Nolan Mercer stood in the darkness with his flashlight turned off, listening to the footsteps approaching from the tunnel.

Slow.

Controlled.

Confident.

That was the part that bothered him.

A person searching for someone lost in a mountain moved differently.

They called out.

They rushed.

They made mistakes because fear controlled them.

But the person walking toward them was not afraid.

He already knew where he was going.

Evelyn stood behind Nolan, her face pale.

The name she whispered remained between them.

“Daniel.”

Nolan looked at her.

“You’re sure?”

She nodded.

“I know his voice.”

Another step echoed.

Closer.

Then the voice came again.

“Evelyn.”

A calm voice.

Almost gentle.

That made it worse.

Because Nolan had learned something during years in dangerous places.

The most dangerous people were not always the loudest.

Sometimes they were the ones who remained calm while everyone else was afraid.

Nolan slowly reached into his backpack.

Not for a weapon.

He did not carry one.

Instead, he pulled out his small emergency radio.

No signal.

Nothing.

The mountain had cut them off completely.

He placed it back.

Evelyn watched him.

“What are you going to do?”

Nolan looked toward the tunnel.

“Keep you alive.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand who he is.”

“Then explain.”

A pause.

The footsteps stopped.

Daniel was somewhere outside the chamber.

Listening.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Daniel Voss was not just my business partner.”

Nolan waited.

“He was my closest friend.”

The confession surprised him.

“He knew everything about my company. My security. My routines.”

“Which means?”

“Which means if he wanted to make me disappear…”

She swallowed.

“He knew exactly how.”

Nolan looked toward the tunnel.

A person who knew her habits.

A person who knew her weaknesses.

A person who knew where evidence could be hidden.

That was more dangerous than a stranger.

“Why would he come here himself?” Nolan asked.

Evelyn looked at the darkness.

“Because he knows what’s inside this mountain.”

The answer made Nolan think of the hidden room.

The old supplies.

The markings.

The name carved into stone.

Daniel had not discovered this place by accident.

He had used it before.

Maybe for years.

A quiet voice came from the tunnel.

“You always were good at finding things, Evelyn.”

Her face changed.

Daniel.

Closer now.

Nolan raised one finger, telling her to stay silent.

But Daniel continued.

“I knew you would eventually understand.”

His voice echoed through the cave.

“That was always your problem.”

Evelyn looked furious.

“You tried to kill me.”

Silence.

Then a small laugh.

Not nervous.

Not surprised.

Almost disappointed.

“I tried to protect what we built.”

Nolan’s expression hardened.

“We?”

Daniel stepped closer.

The edge of a flashlight beam appeared.

A man emerged from the tunnel.

Early forties.

Clean appearance.

Expensive outdoor clothing.

Unlike Nolan, who looked like he belonged to the wilderness because he respected it, Daniel looked like someone who entered dangerous places believing he owned them.

His eyes moved immediately to Evelyn.

Then to Nolan.

A small smile appeared.

“So this is the person who ruined everything.”

Nolan stood between them.

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You misunderstand.”

“I don’t think I do.”

Daniel tilted his head.

“You’re Nolan Mercer.”

The fact that he knew his name immediately confirmed Nolan’s suspicion.

“You researched me.”

Daniel smiled slightly.

“Anyone investigating Evelyn’s disappearance was worth knowing.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“You were watching me.”

“Yes.”

The honesty was disturbing.

No denial.

No attempt to hide.

“Why?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because you were about to destroy everything.”

“You stole from me.”

“I corrected an imbalance.”

Nolan almost laughed.

Almost.

People who justified betrayal always used different words.

Never theft.

Never greed.

Always something softer.

Correction.

Protection.

Necessity.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You have no idea what you uncovered.”

Evelyn’s voice was cold.

“I uncovered that you were stealing millions.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That was the smallest part.”

The cave became silent.

Nolan noticed Evelyn’s expression.

She did not know.

There was more.

Daniel looked at the memory card container attached to Nolan’s backpack.

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But Nolan saw it.

Recognition.

“You found it.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You know what’s on it.”

Daniel did not answer.

That was enough.

Nolan moved subtly, placing himself closer to the backpack.

Daniel noticed.

“You’re careful.”

“I try.”

“That’s why you’re still alive.”

The sentence made Evelyn freeze.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Ask him.”

Nolan frowned.

“Ask who?”

Daniel smiled.

“Ask why your search friend here was the only person who found you.”

The words created a strange tension.

Evelyn looked at Nolan.

Confusion appeared.

Nolan immediately understood what Daniel was doing.

Creating doubt.

Separating them.

A classic tactic.

“Don’t listen to him,” Nolan said.

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Of course you would say that.”

He looked at Evelyn.

“You really don’t know, do you?”

“Know what?”

Daniel took another step.

“Your disappearance was supposed to be permanent.”

Nolan’s eyes narrowed.

“But?”

“But someone changed the plan.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Who?”

Daniel looked directly at Nolan.

The silence answered before the words did.

Evelyn turned slowly.

“Nolan?”

“No.”

His voice was firm.

But Daniel continued.

“He found you because he was looking.”

“That doesn’t prove anything.”

“No.”

Daniel smiled.

“But it raises the question.”

The cave felt smaller.

Darker.

Evelyn looked between them.

Nolan hated that Daniel had managed to create even a moment of uncertainty.

Because uncertainty was dangerous.

Especially after trauma.

Especially after being alone.

“Nolan,” Evelyn said quietly.

He looked at her.

“I found you because I believed you were alive.”

The answer was simple.

But Daniel interrupted.

“And why did you believe that?”

Nolan did not answer.

Because the real answer was complicated.

Because of Aaron.

Because of the search.

Because of the mile.

Because he had spent years refusing to accept endings that were written too quickly.

Daniel smiled.

“Exactly.”

Evelyn looked away.

Only for a second.

But Nolan noticed.

That second hurt more than he expected.

Not because she doubted him.

Because he understood.

She had spent six days trapped.

She had been betrayed by someone she trusted.

Her entire reality had changed.

Trust was not easy anymore.

Nolan lowered his voice.

“Evelyn.”

She looked at him.

“I don’t know what Daniel told you.”

Daniel interrupted.

“I’m telling her the truth.”

Nolan ignored him.

“But I know one thing.”

“What?”

“I walked into this mountain alone.”

Silence.

“I had no idea you would find a hidden case. I had no idea about Daniel. I had no idea about the memory card.”

He looked at her.

“I came because someone was missing.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“Why are you here?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

The calm mask disappeared slightly.

“Because I need what you found.”

“The documents?”

“The memory card.”

Nolan understood.

That was the real reason.

Daniel did not come for Evelyn.

He came for evidence.

The truth.

The thing that could destroy him.

Evelyn looked at him.

“You’re afraid.”

Daniel smiled.

“No.”

But his eyes said something different.

He was.

For the first time, Nolan saw it.

Not confidence.

Not control.

Fear.

Daniel Voss had spent years planning.

He had manipulated situations.

He had hidden evidence.

He had buried a woman inside a mountain.

But now the one thing he could not control was standing in front of him.

A witness.

Alive.

A voice he could not silence.

The mountain shook suddenly.

A violent crack echoed above them.

Everyone froze.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Daniel looked upward.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared on his face.

Nolan noticed.

“You know this place.”

Daniel said nothing.

Nolan stepped closer.

“You know what happens next.”

The silence was the answer.

The mountain was becoming unstable.

And Daniel Voss had just revealed the one thing he never intended anyone to know.

He was not just the man who hid Evelyn’s secret.

He was also the man who knew the mountain could kill them all.

Nolan grabbed Evelyn’s arm.

“We leave.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You won’t make it.”

Nolan stared back.

“Maybe.”

A pause.

“But neither will you.”

For the first time, Daniel had no response.

Because Nolan was right.

The mountain did not care who was guilty.

It did not care who was innocent.

It only cared who was prepared.

And Nolan Mercer had spent his entire life preparing for this exact moment.

As the cave trembled around them, three people began running toward the same exit.

One searching for survival.

May you like

One searching for the truth.

And one trying to escape the consequences of everything he had done.
