Chapter 3 - The Brothers Who Came Before Sunrise

At exactly 5:12 in the morning, the Sterling mansion was still awake.
But the reason had nothing to do with concern.
It was because Mark Sterling believed everything was finally under control.
The divorce papers were signed.
The conversation had happened.
Nora was gone.
And in his mind, the difficult part was over.
He stood in his office overlooking the dark Atlantic waves, holding a glass of whiskey while the storm slowly weakened outside.
The mansion looked exactly the same.
The paintings remained on the walls.
The expensive furniture remained untouched.
The chandelier still illuminated the marble floors.
Nothing had changed.
At least, that was what Mark told himself.
But somewhere deep inside, a small voice kept reminding him of the image he had tried to ignore.
Nora standing outside.
Her hair soaked from the rain.
One hand protecting their unborn child.
The other holding a suitcase.
Looking at him as if she was trying to understand how the man she loved could become someone she no longer recognized.
Mark hated that memory.
Not because he felt guilty.
Because it made him uncomfortable.
He had always believed he was a rational man.
A businessman.
Someone who made difficult decisions without hesitation.
That was what made him successful.
Emotions created weakness.
Attachment created mistakes.
That was what his father had taught him.
And yet, when he saw Nora walk away, something inside him had hesitated.
Only for a moment.
But it was there.
A moment of doubt.
A moment where he almost ran after her.
Almost.
Then Jessica’s voice brought him back.
“You did the right thing.”
Mark turned around.
Jessica stood in the doorway wearing a silk robe that belonged to Patricia’s guest room.
A room Nora had once decorated herself.
The irony did not escape him.
Jessica smiled.
“You look like you’re questioning yourself.”
Mark placed the glass on the desk.
“I’m not.”
She walked closer.
“Good.”
Her fingers touched his shoulder.
“You finally chose someone who belongs beside you.”
Those words should have made him feel better.
Instead, they sounded strange.
Because for years, Nora had been the person standing beside him when nobody else was.
When his company struggled.
When investors doubted him.
When he spent nights buried in paperwork and frustration.
She never asked for luxury.
She never asked for his family’s approval.
She simply stayed.
Mark looked away.
“She’ll receive the settlement.”
Jessica smiled.
“Exactly.”
“She’ll have enough.”
“More than enough.”
Mark nodded.
But neither of them knew that the woman they considered powerless had already made the first call that would change their entire future.
At 5:30 in the morning, a black SUV stopped outside the small roadside café.
The driver immediately stepped out and opened the back door.
A tall man in a dark charcoal suit walked inside.
Alexander Vance.
Thirty-eight years old.
One of the most powerful investors in America.
A man whose name appeared on the front pages of financial newspapers.
A man who could make companies rise or fall with a single decision.
But none of that mattered at that moment.
Because he was not entering as a billionaire.
He was entering as Nora’s older brother.
His eyes immediately found her.
She was sitting near the window.
Small.
Exhausted.
Her face pale from crying.
Her hands wrapped protectively around her stomach.
For a second, Alexander stopped.
The sight hurt more than any business failure ever could.
Because Nora had always been the strongest person he knew.
Even as a child.
After their parents died, she was the one who smiled when everyone else cried.
She was the one who told him and William that everything would be okay.
She was the one who hated being treated differently because of their family name.
And now she was sitting alone in a cheap café because someone had convinced her she had nobody.
Alexander walked toward her.
“Nora.”
She looked up.
The second she saw him, her expression changed.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she was relieved.
She stood carefully.
Alexander reached her before she could take another step.
He wrapped his arms around her.
And for the first time that night, Nora allowed herself to stop being strong.
She cried against her brother’s shoulder.
“I’m sorry.”
Alexander immediately pulled back.
“Why are you apologizing?”
“I didn’t want this.”
His expression softened.
“Nora.”
She looked at him.
“You never have to apologize for being hurt.”
A few seconds later, William entered.
Unlike Alexander, William was quieter.
More reserved.
He was the type of man who rarely showed emotion.
But everyone who knew him understood something important.
William’s silence was never emptiness.
It was control.
And right now, his control was the only thing preventing his anger from exploding.
He looked at Nora.
Then at the suitcase beside her.
Then at the rain outside.
“What exactly happened?”
Nora looked down.
She hated this part.
She hated admitting that she had been wrong.
But she told them everything.
The dinner.
Jessica sitting in her place.
Patricia’s cruelty.
Mark’s coldness.
The divorce papers.
The five thousand dollars.
Every word became harder to say.
By the time she finished, neither brother spoke.
The silence was heavier than shouting.
Finally, William asked:
“He knew you were pregnant?”
Nora nodded.
“He knew.”
Alexander closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he asked:
“And he still put you outside?”
Nora whispered:
“Yes.”
That was the moment something changed.
Not in Nora.
In them.
Because there was a difference between a marriage ending.
And someone abandoning their pregnant sister during a storm.
Alexander looked at William.
No words were needed.
They understood each other.
This was no longer just family pain.
This was betrayal.
A deliberate choice.
A person had looked at Nora and decided she was disposable.
That mistake would have consequences.
At 6:15 in the morning, Mark Sterling received an unexpected phone call.
He almost ignored it.
Unknown numbers usually meant problems.
But something made him answer.
“Mark Sterling speaking.”
A calm voice replied.
“Mr. Sterling.”
Mark frowned.
“Yes?”
“My name is Daniel from Sterling Capital Relations. There has been an urgent request from several major investors.”
Mark immediately became more alert.
“What kind of request?”
A pause.
“An emergency review.”
His expression changed.
“Review of what?”
“Your company’s current leadership and future investment structure.”
Mark stood.
“What?”
The man continued.
“I was instructed to inform you that two primary investors will personally attend today’s meeting.”
“Who?”
Another pause.
Then:
“Alexander Vance and William Vance.”
The glass in Mark’s hand nearly slipped.
The names meant something.
Everyone in the business world knew them.
The Vance brothers.
Billionaire investors.
Strategic owners.
The men who had recently been evaluating several companies for acquisition.
Including his.
Mark’s heartbeat increased.
“Why are they interested in my company?”
The man answered carefully.
“I believe that question will be answered during the meeting.”
The call ended.
Mark stood frozen.
Something about this felt wrong.
The timing.
The names.
The sudden interest.
Then Jessica entered the room.
“What happened?”
Mark slowly looked at her.
“The Vance brothers are reviewing the company.”
Jessica’s confidence disappeared slightly.
“The Vance brothers?”
“Yes.”
She became quiet.
“Why?”
Mark had no answer.
Because neither of them knew.
They did not know the woman they threw away was connected to the very people who could decide their future.
At 7:00 in the morning, Nora arrived at the hospital.
Not because something was wrong.
Because Alexander insisted.
“The baby needs to be checked.”
“I’m fine.”
“No.”
He looked at her firmly.
“You’ve been standing in the rain for hours. You’re exhausted. You’re scared. And you’re pretending you’re okay because that’s what you always do.”
Nora looked away.
Because he was right.
The doctors confirmed the baby was healthy.
But they wanted Nora to rest.
As she lay in the hospital bed, she looked at her brothers sitting nearby.
Two men who controlled billions.
Two men feared by executives around the world.
But to her, they were simply Alex and Will.
The brothers who used to make breakfast when she was little.
The brothers who walked her home from school.
The brothers who promised their parents they would protect her.
A small smile appeared on her face.
“I really messed up.”
Alexander looked confused.
“What?”
“I thought I found a normal life.”
William answered quietly:
“You did.”
Nora looked at him.
“What?”
“You found out who deserved to be part of it.”
Before she could answer, the hospital room door opened.
A nurse stepped inside.
“Ms. Vance?”
Nora froze.
She had not used that name in years.
The nurse smiled.
“Your brothers asked us to update your records.”
The room became silent.
Vance.
The name she had hidden.
The name Mark never knew.
The name that would soon shake his entire world.
Nora looked out the hospital window.
The storm had finally ended.
For the first time in many hours…
The sky was clear.
But across the city, Mark Sterling was walking into the biggest crisis of his life.
Because he still believed he had abandoned a woman with nothing.
He still believed Nora was powerless.
He still believed the story was over.
But he was about to discover the truth.
May you like
The woman he threw away was not the end of his problems.
She was the beginning.
