Chapter 6 - The Empire They Tried To Take

The message stayed on my phone.
"He came back."
I stared at the photograph.
Hunter standing inside Apex Capital Partners.
The company I had spent years protecting.
The company my grandfather built.
The company my father expanded.
The company that represented everything I had tried to escape from.
And now my husband was standing inside it.
Using a keycard connected to my name.
I couldn't breathe for a moment.
Not because I was surprised.
Because deep down, I had already known.
The worst part about betrayal was not discovering the truth.
It was realizing your instincts had warned you long before you were ready to listen.
My father watched my face.
"Tess."
I handed him the phone.
He looked at the image.
His expression changed immediately.
Not shock.
Recognition.
"You know what this means."
I looked at him.
"You know who gave him access."
My father didn't answer.
That was enough.
"Who?"
He looked away.
"Tess."
"Who?"
His silence lasted too long.
Then he said one word.
"Michael."
I froze.
My uncle Daniel's former attorney.
The man standing beside Hunter in the photograph.
The man connected to the years of secrets.
I remembered his face from my childhood.
Always calm.
Always professional.
Always standing near my uncle during important meetings.
He was the person everyone trusted when documents needed to be handled.
When money needed to be protected.
When secrets needed to disappear.
"Michael gave him access?"
My father nodded.
"Apparently."
I looked back at the photograph.
Hunter wasn't there by accident.
People didn't walk into Apex headquarters without authorization.
They didn't get past security.
They didn't enter private executive areas.
Not unless someone wanted them there.
And someone had.
"I need to go there."
My father immediately shook his head.
"No."
I looked at him.
"No?"
"You don't know what you're walking into."
I almost smiled.
"That's exactly why I need to go."
For years, people had made decisions around me.
My father.
My lawyers.
My advisors.
Even Hunter.
Everyone believed they were protecting me.
But protection without honesty was another form of control.
I was done being protected from the truth.
Thirty minutes later, I was standing outside Apex Capital Partners headquarters.
The building reflected the morning sunlight.
Tall.
Powerful.
Untouchable.
The same way people saw me.
But they didn't know the truth.
Inside that building, I wasn't the billionaire heir.
I was the woman who had spent years trying to prove she could exist without that title.
I entered the lobby.
The receptionist immediately stood.
"Ms. Morgan."
I nodded.
"Where is my husband?"
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
She knew.
That hurt more than I expected.
Everyone knew something except me.
"He is in the executive conference room."
I walked toward the elevators.
My father's security team followed behind.
I stopped.
"Wait here."
"Tess."
"I said wait."
They looked at my father.
He nodded.
Because finally, he understood.
This was something I needed to face myself.
The elevator doors closed.
For a moment, I was alone.
And I remembered another elevator.
Three years earlier.
The day Hunter first visited this building.
He looked impressed.
He told me he wanted to build something meaningful.
He told me success wasn't about money.
It was about creating something that lasted.
I believed him.
I believed every word.
The elevator opened.
The executive floor was silent.
Too silent.
I walked toward the conference room.
The door was slightly open.
I heard voices.
Hunter.
And Michael.
"You need to understand the situation."
Michael's voice.
Calm.
Controlled.
"The board will not support this without evidence."
Hunter answered.
"I have evidence."
My heart tightened.
Evidence.
Against me?
I moved closer.
"You have the documents?"
Michael asked.
"Not all of them."
Hunter lowered his voice.
"But enough."
I felt cold.
Documents.
What documents?
Michael spoke again.
"Once the board believes Tess is unstable, they will question her authority."
My entire body froze.
Unstable.
They weren't trying to take money.
They were trying to take control.
Hunter's voice became quieter.
"And the trust?"
Michael answered immediately.
"That will come after."
I stepped away from the door.
Because hearing it was worse than imagining it.
They had planned this.
Not after the wedding.
Before.
The marriage.
The agreement.
The pressure.
The questions about my finances.
Everything.
A strategy.
I pushed the door open.
Both men turned.
Hunter's face went pale.
Michael didn't move.
He simply looked at me.
Like he had expected this moment.
"Tess."
Hunter stood.
I raised my hand.
"Don't."
He stopped.
I looked around the room.
Documents covered the table.
My company documents.
My family's financial records.
Copies of private information.
My life.
Spread across a conference table like a business opportunity.
"What were you planning?"
Nobody answered.
I walked closer.
"What was the end goal?"
Hunter looked at me.
"I can explain."
I laughed softly.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
I picked up one of the documents.
It was a board proposal.
My name was on it.
The title:
"Leadership Transition Review."
My hands tightened.
"You were preparing to remove me."
Hunter immediately shook his head.
"No."
I looked at him.
"Then what is this?"
He didn't answer.
Michael stepped forward.
"This is not personal."
I turned toward him.
"That is the sentence people use when they are about to destroy someone's life."
His expression remained calm.
"You have to understand the company cannot be controlled by emotions."
I stared at him.
"You mean it cannot be controlled by me."
"No."
He paused.
"It cannot be controlled by someone who hides her identity from everyone."
There it was.
The excuse.
The one they had prepared.
They weren't thieves.
They were rescuers.
They weren't betraying me.
They were correcting me.
That was how people justified hurting others.
"I hid my identity because I wanted someone to love me."
I looked at Hunter.
"But you discovered the truth and decided you deserved access."
His face changed.
"I never wanted to hurt you."
"Then what did you want?"
He had no answer.
Because the answer was sitting everywhere around us.
Money.
Power.
Control.
I placed the document back on the table.
"You married me thinking you could eventually become part of my empire."
"No."
Hunter's voice broke.
"I married you because I loved you."
I looked at him.
"Then why are you standing here?"
Silence.
That was all I needed.
My phone rang.
My father's name appeared.
I answered.
"What happened?"
His voice was urgent.
"Tess, you need to leave that building."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"Because the board meeting started ten minutes ago."
My stomach dropped.
"What board meeting?"
A pause.
Then:
"The one where they are presenting evidence that you are unfit to lead Apex Capital."
I looked at Hunter.
He looked away.
That was the confirmation.
They had already moved.
I ended the call.
Michael watched me.
"You should have stayed hidden."
I looked at him.
"No."
I picked up my bag.
"I should have stopped trusting the wrong people sooner."
I walked toward the door.
Hunter followed.
"Tess, please."
I stopped.
Without turning around, I said:
"If you cared about me even once..."
I paused.
"...you would have warned me."
Nothing.
No apology.
No explanation.
Just silence.
I reached the elevator.
The doors opened.
Then my phone received one final notification.
A security alert.
Someone had accessed the private vault containing my grandfather's original ownership documents.
The location appeared on the screen.
May you like
And the person currently inside was not Hunter.
It was my father.
