Chapter 5 - The Letter My Brother Left Behind

The envelope was old.
Too old.
The edges were damaged.
The paper had yellowed from time.
But my name was written clearly across the front.
Arthur Hayes.
My hands didn't move.
I just stared.
Because there was only one person who wrote my name like that.
Michael.
My brother.
The man standing in front of me was Victor Kane's brother.
The man everyone trusted.
The man who had just told me he carried a message from the person I buried three years ago.
Nobody spoke.
Even the highway seemed quiet.
The man looked at Michael.
Then at me.
"You deserve to know the truth."
Michael stepped forward.
"No."
The man's eyes moved toward him.
"You don't get to decide that anymore."
Something changed in Michael's face.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For me.
The officer immediately stepped between us.
"Nobody is moving until I understand what's happening."
The man smiled slightly.
"I expected that."
He reached slowly into his jacket.
The officer reacted instantly.
"Hands where I can see them."
The man stopped.
Then slowly pulled out a small identification card.
Not a weapon.
A badge.
Not police.
Not military.
Something else.
The officer looked at it.
His expression changed.
"You work for Kane?"
The man nodded.
"I used to."
That answer created more questions than it answered.
I looked at him.
"Who are you?"
He looked directly at me.
"My name is Daniel Kane."
The last name hit me.
Kane.
Victor Kane's brother.
The person connected to everything.
"Why do you have my brother's letter?"
Daniel looked down.
"Because Michael trusted me."
Michael laughed quietly.
No humor.
Only disbelief.
"You expect him to believe that?"
Daniel didn't look away.
"I don't expect anyone to believe anything anymore."
That sentence felt familiar.
Because it sounded like something my brother would say.
The officer moved everyone farther away from the road.
The baby was still being examined by paramedics.
Elena remained unconscious inside the ambulance.
And somehow...
The center of everything was still a small envelope.
A piece of paper.
A message from a dead man.
I held it.
But I couldn't open it.
Not yet.
Because opening it meant accepting something I wasn't ready for.
Michael was alive.
Victor Kane was real.
And the life I thought I understood was built on missing pieces.
Daniel noticed.
"You should read it."
I looked at him.
"You don't get to tell me what to do."
He nodded.
"You're right."
A pause.
"But Michael wrote it because he knew you would be angry."
I looked at my brother.
Michael looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
Because it meant Daniel was telling the truth.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Michael's handwriting.
My chest tightened.
Arthur,
If you are reading this, then something went wrong.
I stopped.
Because even the first sentence felt like him.
Always preparing for disaster.
Always expecting the worst.
I continued.
I didn't disappear because I wanted to leave you.
I disappeared because I learned someone was willing to destroy anyone connected to me.
You were the first person I thought about.
Not because you were weak.
Because you were the strongest person I knew.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
The words blurred for a moment.
I kept reading.
You always believed saving someone meant being fast enough.
Strong enough.
Perfect enough.
It doesn't.
Sometimes saving someone means surviving long enough to try again.
I looked down.
Because those words were too close.
Too personal.
Three years.
I had blamed myself for that night.
For the child I couldn't save.
For the moment I wasn't enough.
Michael knew.
He always knew.
The letter continued.
The baby you found is not an accident.
Her name is Lily.
She is the reason Victor Kane is afraid.
But she is not the only reason.
Arthur...
You need to find the file before they do.
The file that proves what Victor has been hiding.
The file connected to you.
I stopped.
Connected to me.
I looked at Michael.
"What file?"
Nobody answered.
That silence was becoming unbearable.
I folded the letter.
"Someone explain."
Michael looked exhausted.
"There was an investigation."
"Into Victor."
"No."
He shook his head.
"Into something bigger."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Victor wasn't just collecting information."
I looked at him.
"Then what was he doing?"
Daniel's expression hardened.
"He was changing lives."
The words sounded impossible.
But I had already learned impossible things could be true.
"Explain."
Daniel looked toward the highway.
"Victor found ways to manipulate records."
"Medical."
"Financial."
"Government."
"Personal histories."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"Control."
A simple answer.
A terrifying one.
"He could make someone disappear on paper."
Michael nodded.
"Or make someone look guilty."
I remembered the man filming me.
The accusations.
How quickly people believed the worst.
Because a story could be created in seconds.
And once enough people believed it...
Truth became harder to find.
I looked at the baby.
At Lily.
"Why her?"
Michael answered quietly.
"Because Elena discovered what Victor was doing."
"And?"
"She copied everything."
Daniel finished.
"Everything Victor wanted hidden."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"The file."
Michael nodded.
"The file is inside Lily's medical records."
I stared.
"That's impossible."
"No."
Michael looked at me.
"That's why they are hunting her."
The police wanted everyone to leave the highway.
The situation was becoming too public.
Too dangerous.
Michael wanted to move Elena and Lily somewhere secure.
The officer wanted explanations.
Nobody trusted anyone.
Honestly...
Neither did I.
Because every person standing around me had lied.
Michael lied.
Daniel hid things.
Sarah knew more than she admitted.
And somehow I was expected to believe they were protecting me.
I walked away from them.
Just a few steps.
But enough to breathe.
Three years.
I had built my entire life around one truth.
My brother was dead.
Now that truth was gone.
And I didn't know what to replace it with.
Michael approached slowly.
"I know you're angry."
I looked at him.
"You have no idea."
He nodded.
"You're right."
That stopped me.
Because I expected an excuse.
Not agreement.
"I should have trusted you."
I looked away.
"Yes."
"I was trying to protect you."
"And you failed."
The words hurt both of us.
But they were true.
Michael lowered his head.
"I know."
A long silence passed.
Then he said something I didn't expect.
"There is one thing I never lied about."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"You were the only person I trusted."
Before I could answer...
A paramedic shouted.
"Someone get over here!"
Everyone turned.
The ambulance doors opened.
Elena was awake.
But she wasn't looking at the doctors.
She was looking directly at me.
Fear filled her eyes.
She grabbed the paramedic's arm.
"Where is Arthur?"
The paramedic pointed.
She saw me.
And her face changed.
Like she recognized me.
Like she had been waiting for me.
Then she said four words.
May you like
The four words that made Michael go completely still.
"Your father was right."
