Chapter 4 - The Family That Betrayed Amelia Faced Their Greatest Mistake

Amelia stood in the middle of Theodore Blackwood’s mansion, staring at the documents spread across the marble table.
For years, she had believed she understood her family.
She believed her father was weak.
She believed Beatrice was cruel.
She believed Kimberly was spoiled.
But she never imagined the truth could be worse.
They had not simply mistreated her.
They had used her.
Every insult.
Every command.
Every moment they made her feel worthless.
It was all part of a calculation.
A way to make her believe she had no choices.
And now she was standing in front of the one person who could destroy everything they built.
"The company..." Amelia whispered.
Theodore watched her carefully.
"Hartwell Manufacturing."
She looked up.
"You bought it?"
"Not exactly."
"What does that mean?"
He walked toward the documents.
"Your father was drowning in debt. The company was already failing before anyone knew."
Amelia looked at the numbers.
The losses were worse than she imagined.
"He never told us."
"No."
"Why?"
"Because Raymond Hart built his entire identity around being powerful."
Theodore picked up one page.
"Admitting failure was impossible for him."
Amelia swallowed.
"So he lied."
"He borrowed money."
"From you?"
"From several investors."
"And when he couldn't repay them?"
Theodore looked at her.
"He made a deal."
"What deal?"
A silence followed.
Then Theodore answered.
"Your family offered something they thought was valuable."
Amelia already knew.
Her face changed.
"Kimberly."
"No."
Theodore's voice was calm.
"Not Kimberly."
The truth hit harder.
"Me."
The room felt colder.
Amelia slowly sat down.
"They traded me."
Theodore did not deny it.
"Your father needed a connection with wealthy investors. When Charles Dane showed interest in Kimberly, Raymond believed he had found his solution."
"And when Charles started noticing me..."
"Your family panicked."
Amelia remembered that night.
Charles following her into the hallway.
His questions.
His curiosity.
The way Beatrice looked at her afterward.
"They blamed me."
"Yes."
"For something I didn't do."
"Yes."
She looked at him.
"And you knew?"
"I knew before the wedding."
Amelia stood suddenly.
"You knew?"
Theodore remained still.
"You knew they were forcing me into this?"
"I knew they were trying to sacrifice you."
"And you still let it happen?"
The question carried more pain than anger.
For the first time, Theodore looked away.
"I needed proof."
Amelia laughed bitterly.
"Proof?"
She shook her head.
"You needed proof while my life was being destroyed."
Theodore accepted the accusation.
Because he knew she was right.
"I should have told you."
"Yes."
"I should have given you a choice."
"Yes."
The honesty surprised her.
He did not defend himself.
He did not explain.
He simply accepted the damage.
That made Amelia even more confused.
Because cruel people always found excuses.
Theodore didn't.
"I am sorry."
The words were quiet.
Simple.
Real.
Amelia looked at him.
Nobody in her family had apologized to her in years.
Not once.
The next morning, Pine Hollow woke up to a shocking rumor.
The beggar had disappeared.
The woman who married him had vanished with him.
And everyone wanted answers.
At Hartwell Manor, Beatrice watched the morning news while drinking coffee.
She smiled.
"Perfect."
Kimberly sat across from her.
"What?"
"The story is already spreading."
The television showed a picture of Amelia and Theodore outside the courthouse.
The headline read:
WEALTHY HEIRESS MARRIES MYSTERY DRIFTER IN SHOCKING COURTHOUSE CEREMONY
Kimberly laughed.
"This is better than I expected."
Raymond looked uncomfortable.
"You think this is funny?"
Both women turned.
Kimberly frowned.
"Daddy?"
Raymond stood near the window.
His expression was troubled.
"You don't know what you've done."
Beatrice rolled her eyes.
"Don't start feeling guilty now."
"I'm not feeling guilty."
"Then what?"
Raymond looked at the television.
"I have a bad feeling."
Kimberly laughed.
"About Amelia?"
"About him."
The room became quiet.
Beatrice stared.
"The drifter?"
"Yes."
She smiled.
"Raymond, please."
"He wasn't afraid."
"What?"
"At the courthouse."
Raymond looked thoughtful.
"When Kimberly recorded them, everyone was uncomfortable."
"Because he was homeless."
"No."
Raymond shook his head.
"Because everyone expected him to be embarrassed."
A pause.
"But he wasn't."
Beatrice ignored him.
"You are overthinking."
Then her phone rang.
She answered.
"Hello?"
The color slowly disappeared from her face.
Raymond noticed.
"What happened?"
Beatrice ended the call.
"The bank."
"What about it?"
"They froze the company's remaining accounts."
Nobody spoke.
Kimberly frowned.
"Why?"
Beatrice looked toward the television.
Toward the image of Theodore standing beside Amelia.
"I don't know."
Raymond slowly walked closer.
"Who did it?"
Beatrice hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"Blackwood International."
The room went silent.
Across town, Amelia sat inside Theodore's private office.
She had barely slept.
Too many questions.
Too many secrets.
"You have a company worth billions," she said.
Theodore looked up from his laptop.
"Yes."
"You could have exposed my family immediately."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because I wanted the truth."
Amelia frowned.
"The truth about what?"
"About whether they would choose money over you."
She looked down.
The answer hurt because she already knew.
"They did."
"Yes."
Theodore closed his laptop.
"But there is something else."
"What?"
He walked to a locked cabinet.
Inside was a file.
He placed it in front of her.
Amelia opened it.
Her mother's name appeared on the first page.
Anna Hart.
Her hands froze.
"My mother?"
Theodore watched her reaction.
"Your mother knew something."
"What?"
"Before she died."
Amelia looked up quickly.
"What are you talking about?"
"Anna Hart discovered what Raymond had been doing with the company."
Her heart raced.
"My mother knew?"
"Yes."
"What did she find?"
Theodore hesitated.
"She found evidence that money was being moved illegally."
Amelia stared.
"No."
"Your mother tried to stop him."
"That's impossible."
"Why?"
"Because my father loved my mother."
Theodore's expression softened.
"People can love someone and still betray them."
The words hurt.
Because they sounded too familiar.
"What happened to her?"
Theodore looked at the file.
"That is the question I have been trying to answer."
Amelia slowly closed the folder.
"You think my mother's death wasn't an accident."
"I think your mother knew too much."
Silence filled the room.
Then Amelia's phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Raymond.
For a moment, she considered ignoring it.
Then she answered.
"Dad."
His voice sounded different.
Not angry.
Not powerful.
Afraid.
"Amelia..."
"What do you want?"
"I need to talk to you."
"No."
"Please."
She froze.
Her father had not said please to her in years.
"What happened?"
A long pause.
Then Raymond whispered:
"Who is your husband?"
Amelia looked at Theodore.
He already knew.
"Why?"
"Because Blackwood International just destroyed our company."
Amelia's eyes narrowed.
"My husband?"
Raymond's breathing changed.
"Amelia..."
"Answer me."
Another pause.
Then Raymond said the words that confirmed everything.
"Your husband is Theodore Blackwood."
Amelia looked at Theodore.
Her voice was quiet.
"He knows."
Theodore nodded.
Raymond continued.
"Do you understand what you have done?"
Amelia almost laughed.
What she had done?
She looked around the room.
At the empire Theodore built.
At the evidence of her family's betrayal.
"No, Dad."
Her voice became stronger.
"What you did."
Silence.
Then Raymond said:
"You don't know who he really is."
Amelia looked at Theodore.
May you like
For the first time, she believed that maybe...
Neither did her father.
