Chapter 5 - The Last Debt

"Nobody moves," Dominic ordered.

Claire heard five frightened breaths.

Then Lily cried.

"Claire!"

"I'm here."

Claire moved toward the sound.

Dominic caught her wrist.

"Stay down."

Emergency lights flickered on.

All five children were present.

Gabriel.

Sophie.

Noah.

Ben.

Lily.

Claire counted twice.

Everyone safe.

Dominic checked exits.

Locked.

No intruder.

Then Claire noticed a white envelope beneath the door.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Dominic read it.

His expression changed.

"Whose?"

He handed it to Claire.

A baby girl.

Born twenty-nine years earlier.

Mother: Margaret Donnelly.

Claire's aunt.

Father blank.

Claire frowned.

"Aunt Margaret never had children."

Dominic looked at the name.

"According to this, she did."

On the back someone had written:

ASK CLAIRE WHO HER MOTHER REALLY WAS.

Claire laughed once.

"This is ridiculous."

But Dominic didn't.

"Claire, where's your birth certificate?"

She stared at him.

"My apartment."

They retrieved it.

Mother: Kathleen Donnelly.

Margaret's younger sister.

Claire's mother had died when Claire was eleven.

Dominic compared the documents.

Same hospital.

Same date.

Same time.

Different mothers.

Claire sat down.

"Impossible."

Dominic called an investigator.

By morning, records confirmed something astonishing.

The certificate naming Margaret had been created first.

Kathleen's appeared two days later.

Claire had been Margaret's biological daughter.

Her aunt had raised her as a niece because Margaret was seventeen when Claire was born.

Kathleen had legally adopted her.

Claire felt betrayed by dead women.

"Why wouldn't they tell me?"

Dominic sat beside her.

"Maybe they were protecting you."

"From what?"

The answer arrived through the ledger.

Margaret Donnelly's name appeared once.

Beside it:

Witness—Sloane.

Dominic's investigator uncovered the rest.

At seventeen, Margaret had witnessed Victor Sloane kill a man during a robbery.

She agreed to testify.

Then discovered she was pregnant.

Threats followed.

Dominic's father arranged for her to disappear from the case in exchange for silence.

Margaret gave Claire to Kathleen publicly and spent the rest of her life pretending to be only an aunt.

Victor believed Margaret had left evidence.

And now he believed Claire possessed it.

"The bakery," Claire whispered.

Dominic nodded.

"He didn't burn it because of me."

"Not entirely."

"He was looking for something."

They returned to the damaged bakery.

Claire searched Aunt Margaret's old belongings.

Recipe books.

Boxes.

Photographs.

Then she remembered the brass bell.

The firefighter had recovered it.

Dominic turned it over.

Something rattled inside.

They removed the base.

A tiny key fell out.

Engraved on it:

Greyhaven Station had storage lockers.

Locker 214 contained a metal box.

Inside were photographs, an old cassette recording, and a handwritten statement from Margaret.

Claire read it with shaking hands.

Margaret had recorded Victor confessing to murder.

She had hidden the evidence because Dominic's father threatened Kathleen and baby Claire.

At the bottom Margaret had written:

If Claire ever reads this, tell her I was sorry I let fear choose her childhood for her.

Claire cried.

Dominic held her.

The evidence was enough.

Federal agents prepared another operation.

Victor contacted Claire that night.

"Bring the box."

"No."

Dominic stared at her.

Victor laughed.

"You've grown brave."

"No. I've grown tired."

"Midnight tomorrow."

"You're going to prison."

"Maybe."

His voice lowered.

"But first ask Dominic what his father did to your mother."

The call ended.

Claire turned.

Dominic looked devastated.

"What?"

He said nothing.

"Dominic."

"My father knew Margaret was pregnant."

"So?"

"He used you."

Claire felt cold.

"How?"

"He told Margaret that if she testified, Victor would kill her baby."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Your father helped silence her."

"Yes."

"And you knew?"

"I found out when I read the ledger after Elena died."

Claire stepped backward.

"You knew my history before you ever walked into my bakery."

"No."

"When?"

"After the first photograph appeared."

"And you didn't tell me."

"I was trying to verify it."

"You let me discover it from the man threatening us."

"Claire—"

"Don't."

She left.

For two days, Claire avoided Dominic.

She stayed with Rachel.

The children sent messages.

Sophie: I love you.

Noah: BEN ATE YOUR EMERGENCY COOKIE.

Ben: NO I DIDNT.

Gabriel: They're impossible. Also Dad looks terrible.

Claire almost smiled.

She loved them.

That was the problem.

She loved Dominic too.

But love without truth frightened her.

On the third evening, Gabriel came alone.

"You don't have to forgive Dad."

Claire looked at him.

"That's surprisingly mature."

"He messed up."

"Also mature."

"But Mom used to say Dad thinks protecting people means deciding things for them."

Claire's heart tightened.

"Your mother sounds smart."

"She was."

Gabriel looked down.

"She also said loving somebody means giving them enough truth to choose."

Claire sat beside him.

"Did your dad send you?"

"No."

"Does he know you're here?"

"No."

"Should I be worried?"

"Probably."

Claire laughed.

Then Gabriel became serious.

"He loves you."

"Gabriel—"

"I know because he's scared."

Claire looked at him.

"He was scared after Mom died. But that was different. He was scared of losing us."

"And now?"

"He's scared you'll choose to leave."

Claire closed her eyes.

That night, she returned to Dominic's house.

He stood when she entered.

"I was wrong," he said immediately.

No defense.

No explanation.

"I should have told you."

"Yes."

"I thought information would put you in danger."

"It was my life."

"I know."

"You don't get to choose which truths I can survive."

"I know."

Claire studied him.

"Stop agreeing."

"I don't want to lie again."

That almost broke her anger.

Dominic stepped closer.

"I can't promise my past won't reach us."

"Then promise something you can control."

"What?"

"Never make my choices for me."

"I promise."

Claire nodded.

"Then we finish this together."

The operation was set.

The evidence went to federal custody.

Victor Sloane was located at an abandoned mountain lodge.

Agents moved in.

Victor fled.

A pursuit followed.

By dawn, his vehicle was found empty.

Blood on the driver's seat.

No body.

Greyhaven celebrated anyway.

Claire didn't.

Neither did Dominic.

Three days passed.

The bakery reopened.

Customers filled every table.

The children helped behind the counter.

For the first time in months, Claire felt hope.

At closing, Dominic approached.

"Everyone out."

Ben protested.

Gabriel herded them toward the door.

Claire laughed.

"What are you doing?"

Dominic looked nervous.

Actually nervous.

Then he reached into his coat.

Claire's heart stopped.

Before he could remove whatever he was holding, the brass bell above the door rang.

A man entered.

Older.

Bleeding.

Claire recognized Victor Sloane from photographs.

He held a gun low beside his coat.

Dominic moved in front of Claire.

Victor smiled.

"Go ahead, Vale. Ask her to marry you."

May you like

He raised the weapon.

"Let's see how long this wife survives."
