Chapter 3 - The Second Name On The Death Record

The envelope was sitting on the table.

Nobody had touched it.

Nobody had seen anyone place it there.

But it was there.

Right beside the inheritance documents I had almost signed.

My phone was still in my hand.

Claire’s voice was still echoing in my head.

Your son was never the only baby they took.

I stared at the envelope.

My heart was beating so hard it felt like everyone in the room could hear it.

“Ethan,” Michael, my attorney, said quietly. “Don’t open that until we know what we’re dealing with.”

I looked at him.

“Three days ago, I buried my son.”

My voice cracked.

“Someone stole my child from me.”

I picked up the envelope.

“And now I’m done waiting.”

The room watched as I opened it.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

An official hospital document.

At the top was the logo of St. Catherine’s Medical Center.

The same hospital where Lucas was born.

The same hospital where they told me he died.

My fingers tightened around the page.

I read the first line.

Patient: Claire Bennett.

My eyes moved down.

Delivery date.

Time of birth.

Baby identification number.

Everything matched.

Until I reached the bottom.

There was another name.

Another baby.

Another record.

My breathing stopped.

“What is it?” Maria asked.

I couldn’t answer.

Because the paper in my hand didn’t just prove Lucas was alive.

It proved there had been another child involved.

A second newborn.

A second identity.

A second secret.

Michael stepped closer.

“Ethan?”

I handed him the document.

His face changed as he read it.

“This…”

He stopped.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“There were two babies registered that night.”

The room became silent.

“Two?”

Michael nodded slowly.

“One male infant under Claire Bennett’s medical file.”

He pointed at the paper.

“And another infant listed under an unknown mother.”

I stared at him.

“Why would my wife’s file have another baby?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew the answer.

Someone had hidden something.

The nurse covered her mouth.

“I didn’t know about this part.”

I turned toward her.

“You worked there.”

She shook her head quickly.

“No. I only saw the switch.”

“What switch?”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“The moment they removed your baby.”

I stepped closer.

“Tell me exactly what happened.”

She looked at Lucas in my arms.

Then she took a deep breath.

“It was the night after your son was born.”

She paused.

“The maternity floor was unusually quiet.”

I listened.

“I was checking on the newborns when I saw a man enter the restricted area.”

“Adrian?”

She hesitated.

“No.”

That answer surprised me.

“Then who?”

She looked down.

“I never saw his face clearly.”

The room shifted.

“Then how do you know someone was involved?”

She reached into her pocket again.

This time she pulled out a small USB drive.

“I copied the security footage.”

Michael immediately grabbed it.

“Why didn’t you give this to the police?”

Her eyes became darker.

“Because the police report disappeared.”

My stomach turned.

“Disappeared?”

She nodded.

“The officer assigned to investigate closed the case within hours.”

“Why?”

She looked at Adrian.

Nobody needed her to explain.

My brother’s face had lost all confidence.

For the first time since the meeting began, he looked trapped.

“You’re making a mistake,” Adrian said.

I turned toward him.

“You keep saying that.”

I walked closer.

“But you haven’t once asked where my son has been.”

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

That was when I knew.

He wasn’t shocked by the baby.

He was shocked that I found out.

I placed Lucas carefully into Maria’s arms.

Then I looked directly at my brother.

“Where is Claire?”

His eyes moved.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“You know.”

It wasn’t a question.

Adrian looked away.

My anger exploded.

“You know where my wife is.”

“Ethan—”

“No.”

My voice shook the room.

“You don’t get to say my name like we’re brothers.”

Everyone went quiet.

Because something had changed.

The person standing across from me was no longer my brother.

He was someone who had watched me suffer.

Someone who had stood beside my grave.

Someone who had helped create my nightmare.

Michael quickly opened his laptop.

“I’m accessing the hospital records.”

The nurse moved closer.

“Be careful.”

“Why?”

She looked at him.

“Because whoever erased those files knows how to erase people too.”

Nobody spoke.

Then the computer screen changed.

Michael frowned.

“What?”

“What did you find?”

He turned the laptop toward us.

“There’s a hidden entry.”

I looked.

A private medical transfer.

Three days ago.

The same day I buried Lucas.

My eyes followed the details.

Patient transferred.

Location unknown.

Name withheld.

My blood went cold.

Because the transfer wasn’t for Lucas.

It was for Claire.

“She was moved.”

Maria whispered.

“Yes.”

I looked at the nurse.

“Where?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

But then Lily, who had been standing quietly near her mother, spoke.

A child’s voice.

Small.

But clear.

“I know.”

Everyone turned.

Maria looked horrified.

“Lily.”

The girl looked at me.

“I saw the place.”

I walked toward her slowly.

“Where?”

She looked nervous.

“Before Mama brought the baby here, she went somewhere.”

Maria closed her eyes.

“Lily…”

“No, Mama.”

The little girl held back tears.

“He needs to know.”

I knelt down.

“What did you see?”

She whispered.

“A house.”

“What house?”

She looked at Adrian.

And my blood turned cold.

“Uncle Adrian’s house.”

The room exploded.

Adrian stepped backward.

“That’s impossible.”

Lily shook her head.

“I saw a woman inside.”

My heart stopped.

“What woman?”

The little girl looked at me.

“The woman who looked like the lady in the picture.”

“What picture?”

She pointed toward the envelope.

The hospital document.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“The other picture.”

My hands went cold.

“What other picture?”

She whispered:

“The one with the two babies.”

Nobody moved.

Michael immediately searched through the envelope.

There was nothing else inside.

Then the nurse suddenly grabbed the document.

Her eyes widened.

“Wait.”

She turned it over.

On the back.

Hidden beneath the folded edge.

Was a photograph.

A small hospital photograph.

Two newborn babies.

Side by side.

One had a blue bracelet.

One had a white bracelet.

I looked closer.

The white bracelet.

Lucas.

The blue bracelet.

Another baby.

But the thing that made my entire body freeze was not the babies.

It was the handwritten note beneath them.

Three words.

Three words that changed everything.

“Only one survives.”

I looked up at Adrian.

He was already reaching for the door.

“Stop him.”

Nobody moved fast enough.

He grabbed the handle.

May you like

The door opened.

And standing outside was the one person I never expected to see…
