Chapter 5 - The Daughter Hidden in the Shadows

The address was written beneath the warning.
"Come alone, or your daughter disappears again."
I arrived at the abandoned apartment building before midnight.
The door was already open.
Inside was a photograph of my daughter.
And beneath it was a message written in my father's handwriting.
I stood outside the building for almost a full minute.
Not because I was afraid.
Fear was something I had learned to control a long time ago.
I was calculating.
The message could have been a trap.
The location could have been chosen to isolate me.
The person who sent it knew exactly what would make me move.
My daughter.
My weakness.
My blood.
That was what made it dangerous.
A man could survive an attack against himself.
But when someone touched his family, survival became something else.
It became revenge.
Thomas stood beside me.
"You said you were coming alone."
I looked at him.
"I said they wanted me to come alone."
He understood immediately.
There was a difference.
I had spent my life surrounded by people who followed orders.
Thomas was one of the few who understood my decisions before I explained them.
"We have men positioned three blocks away," he said.
"Good."
"If this is Adrian..."
I looked at the dark building.
"It is."
Thomas was silent.
Because we both knew what that meant.
My entire family history had been rewritten by a man I had never known existed.
A brother.
A shadow.
Someone who had watched my life from a distance while stealing pieces of it.
I entered the building.
The hallway smelled like dust and old concrete.
No cameras.
No guards.
No obvious signs of danger.
That bothered me.
People like Adrian didn't create empty spaces.
They created controlled spaces.
Every detail meant something.
The apartment door at the end of the hallway was open.
I walked inside.
The room was almost empty.
A table.
A chair.
A photograph.
Nothing else.
The photograph was facing down.
I picked it up.
My hand stopped.
It was Isabella.
Holding a baby.
Not one.
Two.
Twins.
My children.
My entire body went still.
On the back of the photograph were four words.
Words written by a hand I recognized.
"My children survived."
My father's handwriting.
I looked around the room.
"Show yourself."
Nothing.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
"You always were impatient, Rocco."
I turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
Calm expression.
But the eyes.
Those were familiar.
The same eyes from the photograph.
The same eyes from my father's old records.
Adrian Moretti.
My brother.
The man my entire family erased.
"You knew I would come."
He smiled slightly.
"I knew you would come the moment you saw your daughter's face."
I stepped forward.
"Where is she?"
Adrian looked at me.
Not afraid.
Almost disappointed.
"That is the first thing you ask?"
"Where is my daughter?"
A quiet laugh escaped him.
"Nine years ago, you lost two children."
His expression hardened.
"And you only started searching when someone handed you proof."
My jaw tightened.
"You are the reason they disappeared."
"No."
His answer was immediate.
"I am the reason they survived."
I stared at him.
Every instinct told me he was lying.
But something about his words bothered me.
Because he didn't sound like a man protecting himself.
He sounded like a man protecting a secret.
"You expect me to believe that?"
Adrian walked into the room.
Slowly.
"I expect you to remember something."
He placed a folder on the table.
"Your father didn't trust anyone."
I looked at the folder.
"He trusted you."
"No."
Adrian shook his head.
"He trusted no one."
He opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Medical reports.
Everything connected to my children.
"The night your son was born, someone entered St. Helena."
I looked down.
"Who?"
Adrian stared at me.
"Your father's closest adviser."
I frowned.
"Thomas?"
"No."
A pause.
"Someone closer."
The room became quiet.
I thought of Valentina.
But Adrian noticed.
"You still think it's your wife."
"She lied to me."
"Yes."
He nodded.
"But she was afraid."
"Of whom?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Instead, he pushed another document toward me.
It was a hospital security report.
A name was circled.
Dr. Adrian Vale.
But beneath it was another name.
Someone I knew.
Someone who had been beside me for years.
I stared at the page.
"No."
Adrian watched my reaction.
"You trusted him with your family."
I looked at him.
"Who?"
Adrian's voice became quiet.
"Thomas Russo."
The world seemed to stop for a moment.
Impossible.
Thomas had been with my family since I was a child.
He had protected my father.
Protected me.
Protected my empire.
He was the man I called when I needed the truth.
"You are lying."
Adrian shook his head.
"I knew you would say that."
"Because you want me to turn against everyone."
"No."
His eyes hardened.
"Because everyone already turned against you."
Before I could respond, my phone vibrated.
A message.
From Thomas.
I opened it.
One sentence.
"Rocco, don't trust Adrian."
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
A photo.
Thomas standing outside a hospital.
Talking to someone.
I zoomed in.
The person beside him was wearing a hood.
But I recognized the face.
Dr. Adrian Vale.
The doctor who declared my son dead.
The doctor who disappeared.
My grip tightened.
Adrian watched me.
"You see?"
I looked at him.
"Where is my daughter?"
For the first time, his expression changed.
Concern.
Real concern.
"Rocco..."
The lights in the apartment suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Not one person.
Several.
Adrian turned toward the door.
And for the first time, the man who had been calm all night looked afraid.
"That's impossible."
I reached for my weapon.
"Who is it?"
Adrian whispered the name.
And the name made every piece of the puzzle fall into place.
May you like
"Valentina."
The door slowly opened.
