Chapter 1 - The Shoes Under His Bed

Elena Marino stopped in the bedroom doorway and whispered:

“Why are you wearing my robe?”

Dante Marino turned from the bed as a tiny pair of white baby shoes caught Elena’s eye beneath the frame.

One shoe had a faded blue letter written inside it.

M.

This was not about Sabrina Cross.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Elena’s hand settled automatically over the curve of her eight-month pregnancy.

Across the master bedroom, Sabrina stood beside the windows with a champagne glass between her fingers. The black satin dress she had worn earlier was partly covered by Elena’s ivory silk robe—the robe Dante had given Elena on their first anniversary.

That detail hurt more than Elena wanted to admit.

Dante stood between the two women, shirtless, his tattooed shoulders rigid. He had faced federal investigators, rival crews, and men who had entered rooms intending to kill him.

Elena had never seen him look uncertain.

Until now.

“Take it off,” Elena said.

Sabrina glanced down at the robe.

“Elena—”

“I wasn’t talking to my husband.”

Sabrina’s fingers tightened around the glass.

Dante stepped forward. “Enough.”

Elena laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Enough?”

Her eyes moved from Sabrina to the bed.

“My husband brings another woman into our bedroom, gives her my clothes, and somehow I’m the one who needs to stop?”

“You don’t understand what’s happening.”

“Then explain it.”

Dante said nothing.

That silence was worse than an admission.

Only twenty minutes earlier, Elena had been downstairs finishing tea with Dante’s aunt when one of the household staff quietly told her that Sabrina Cross had arrived through the private elevator.

Sabrina had been part of Dante’s world long before Elena.

Beautiful.

Educated.

Dangerously calm.

Her father had once worked with Dante’s father, and rumors had followed Sabrina for years. Some claimed Dante had nearly married her before meeting Elena.

Dante always dismissed those stories.

“She’s business,” he had said.

Tonight, business was wearing his wife’s robe.

Elena turned toward the hallway.

Dante’s voice stopped her.

“You’ll sleep in the guest room tonight.”

She slowly looked back.

“What?”

“The guest room.”

Sabrina lowered her gaze.

Dante’s face remained controlled.

“This room isn’t safe for you tonight.”

Elena stared at him.

He could have said anything else.

He could have told her guards were searching the room.

He could have said there had been a threat.

Instead, he had allowed Sabrina to stand there wearing Elena’s robe and told his pregnant wife to leave.

Something inside Elena went quiet.

“Fine.”

She turned.

Then she saw them.

Two tiny white shoes beneath the bed.

Elena froze.

The shoes were so small they could have fit inside one of Dante’s hands.

They weren’t new.

One had a faint scuff across the toe.

A cold sensation moved through Elena’s chest.

They had purchased clothing for their unborn son only three weeks earlier.

Nothing looked like these.

Dante followed her gaze.

His expression changed.

It happened for less than a second.

But Elena saw it.

Fear.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Elena bent down.

“Elena, don’t.”

Dante crossed the room.

Too late.

She picked up one shoe.

Sabrina set down her glass.

Elena turned the shoe over.

Nothing.

Then she looked inside.

A faded blue M had been written beneath the tongue.

Her throat tightened.

“Whose are these?”

Dante didn’t answer.

“Dante.”

“Put the shoe down.”

“Whose baby shoes are under our bed?”

Sabrina whispered, “You should tell her.”

Dante’s head snapped toward her.

“Not another word.”

Elena looked between them.

There it was.

The confirmation she hadn’t wanted.

They both knew.

She held the shoe against her palm.

“How long?”

Dante frowned.

“How long what?”

“How long have you been lying to me?”

“This isn’t what you think.”

“That sentence has never made an innocent man sound innocent.”

“Elena.”

“Is there another child?”

Sabrina closed her eyes.

Dante went completely still.

Elena felt the baby inside her move.

Her hand immediately covered her stomach.

Dante noticed.

His expression softened, and he moved toward her.

She stepped back.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

“Is there another child?” Elena repeated.

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

She almost believed him.

Then Sabrina said, “Not anymore.”

Silence.

Dante turned on her.

“Sabrina.”

Elena felt the room tilt.

“What does that mean?”

Sabrina’s confidence disappeared.

“I shouldn’t have said that.”

“No,” Elena said. “You absolutely should have.”

Dante grabbed his shirt from a chair.

“We’re done.”

“No, we’re starting.”

He pulled the shirt on without buttoning it and reached for his phone.

“Marco.”

The security chief answered immediately.

“Lock down the penthouse.”

Elena stared at him.

Dante continued.

“Nobody leaves. Nobody enters. Shut down the private elevator and bring two men upstairs.”

He ended the call.

Elena’s anger shifted.

This was no longer the reaction of a husband caught with another woman.

Something else was happening.

Something dangerous.

She looked again at the shoe.

“Why are you locking us inside?”

Dante buttoned his shirt.

“Because Sabrina wasn’t supposed to be here.”

Sabrina stiffened.

Elena looked at her.

“You invited her.”

“No,” Dante said. “I didn’t.”

Sabrina’s face drained of color.

“What are you talking about?”

Dante reached toward the nightstand and picked up a cream envelope Elena hadn’t noticed.

He held it up.

“This was on my pillow when I came upstairs.”

“What is it?”

“An invitation.”

“To what?”

Dante looked at Sabrina.

“To bring her here.”

Sabrina shook her head.

“I received one too.”

Elena stared at them.

Sabrina reached into her handbag and produced another envelope.

Same paper.

Same black seal.

Dante took it.

Elena watched him compare the two.

“What did yours say?” she asked.

Sabrina hesitated.

Dante answered for her.

“Come to the Marino penthouse at eleven. Wear what is waiting for you in the master suite.”

Elena looked at the robe.

Sabrina nodded.

“When I arrived, it was laid across the chair.”

“So you just put it on?”

“I was told Dante requested it.”

Elena’s voice sharpened.

“And that sounded normal?”

“No.”

“Yet here you are.”

Sabrina looked ashamed.

“I needed to know why he contacted me.”

Dante opened the second envelope.

His jaw tightened.

Elena reached for it.

He resisted.

“Give it to me.”

“Elena—”

“Give me the damn letter.”

He did.

There were only two lines.

SHE WILL FIND THE SHOES TONIGHT.

THEN YOU WILL FINALLY TELL HER ABOUT MICHAEL.

Elena read the name twice.

Michael.

M.

Her gaze dropped to the shoe.

“Who is Michael?”

Neither answered.

Elena felt the child inside her kick again.

She looked at her husband.

“Who is Michael, Dante?”

His eyes were no longer cold.

They were devastated.

“A boy I failed.”

“What boy?”

Before Dante could answer, three hard knocks sounded at the bedroom door.

Marco entered with two guards.

“Boss.”

“What?”

Marco held out a tablet.

“We checked the cameras.”

“And?”

“Sabrina entered at 10:52.”

“I know.”

“That isn’t the problem.”

Marco turned the screen toward them.

The hallway camera showed Sabrina walking toward the bedroom.

Twenty seconds later, another figure appeared.

A woman.

Her face was hidden beneath a hood.

She entered the bedroom after Sabrina.

Then she emerged forty-three seconds later.

Elena stared.

“Who is she?”

“We don’t know,” Marco said.

Dante took the tablet.

“Run facial reconstruction.”

“Already started.”

Elena looked at the baby shoe.

“Did she put these under the bed?”

Marco hesitated.

“There’s more.”

He swiped to another camera.

The service corridor.

The hooded woman passed beneath a brighter light.

For one frame, she turned toward the camera.

Dante stopped breathing.

Sabrina whispered, “Oh my God.”

Elena looked at her husband.

“You know her.”

Dante didn’t answer.

“Dante.”

His fingers tightened around the tablet.

Elena stepped closer.

“Who is that woman?”

Before he could respond, Dante’s phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Elena asleep in the guest room.

The photograph had been taken from inside the room.

Tonight.

Beneath it was one sentence.

ASK YOUR HUSBAND WHAT HAPPENED TO MICHAEL.

Elena looked toward the open bedroom door.

The guest room was down the hall.

She had been inside it less than ten minutes earlier.

Someone had been watching her.

Then another message arrived.

DON’T LET DANTE DESTROY THE SECOND CHILD TOO.

Elena’s blood went cold.

Dante reached for the phone.

She pulled it away.

“Second child?”

“Elena, listen to me.”

She backed toward the door.

Marco suddenly touched his earpiece.

His face changed.

“Boss.”

Dante turned.

“What?”

“We found someone in the east hallway.”

“Who?”

Marco looked directly at Elena.

“She says her name is Maria.”

Elena glanced at the faded letter inside the baby shoe.

M.

Then came a sound from the hallway.

A child crying.

Elena stopped breathing.

The bedroom door slowly opened wider.

A small shadow appeared on the other side.

And a little boy whispered:

“Daddy?”
