Chapter 10 - The Truth About My Father

I stared at the screen.

I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

The photograph was old.

The quality was poor.

But the faces were clear.

My father.

And beside him…

My mother.

For years, I had remembered her as the person who stayed.

The person who raised me.

The person who told me my father walked away.

The person who said he chose not to come back.

But now Andy was showing me a picture that made everything I believed collapse.

My father wasn’t running from strangers.

He was standing beside the woman who told me he abandoned us.

“No.”

The word came out quietly.

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t prove anything.”

Andy looked at me.

“Doesn’t it?”

I looked at Daniel.

Then Evelyn.

Then Rachel.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone was waiting.

Waiting for me to understand something they already knew.

“Explain.”

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Andy lowered the phone.

“Your father found out your mother was involved.”

“Involved with what?”

Nobody answered.

That silence was the worst part.

Because silence meant there was something everyone was afraid to say.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Andy is leaving out important details.”

Andy looked at him.

“Of course you would say that.”

Daniel ignored him.

“Your father did not disappear because he was afraid of your mother.”

I looked at him.

“Then why?”

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“Because he discovered she was being manipulated.”

I frowned.

“Manipulated?”

He nodded.

“Your mother was not the person controlling everything.”

My heart slowed.

“Then who was?”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Like she had been hoping this moment would never come.

“Your grandfather.”

I froze.

“What?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“Your mother’s father.”

I felt confused.

“My grandfather was dead before I was old enough to remember.”

“Yes.”

“Then how could he be involved?”

Daniel opened the folder.

He pulled out several documents.

“These are records your father collected before he disappeared.”

I looked down.

The names.

The dates.

The transactions.

Everything connected.

My father had been investigating my mother’s family.

Not because he hated them.

Because he was trying to protect me.

“Your father discovered that your grandfather had been moving company money through different accounts,” Daniel explained.

“But why?”

Rachel looked at the papers.

“To hide ownership.”

I remembered the documents.

The fake signatures.

The company transfers.

The same pattern.

The same method.

It had been happening for decades.

My family had been trapped in someone else’s game long before Andy entered my life.

“But my mother…”

I couldn’t finish.

Because a painful thought appeared.

What if she knew?

What if she had lied too?

Daniel looked at me.

“Your mother found out what your father discovered.”

My hands tightened.

“And then?”

He hesitated.

“That’s when your father disappeared.”

The room felt colder.

I looked at Andy.

“You knew this?”

He looked away.

“I knew pieces.”

“You knew enough to use it against me.”

His face changed.

“I was trying to find the truth.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You were trying to find something you could use.”

Andy didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

The truth had finally become too big for him to control.

Evelyn slowly stood.

“I need to tell you something.”

Everyone looked at her.

She walked toward the cabinet.

She opened a small hidden compartment.

Inside was a box.

An old wooden box.

She carried it to the table.

“I kept this because I was afraid.”

I stared at it.

“What is it?”

She looked at me.

“Something your father left behind.”

My heart stopped.

“Why do you have it?”

“Because he trusted me.”

That sentence surprised me.

“He trusted you?”

Evelyn nodded.

“The night before he disappeared, he came to me.”

Nobody spoke.

“He told me he was going somewhere.”

“Where?”

She shook her head.

“He wouldn’t say.”

“Why?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because he believed someone was watching him.”

I looked at the box.

“What was inside?”

Evelyn opened it.

There were letters.

Photographs.

A small key.

And one envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

My father’s handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

After all these years.

A message from him.

For me.

I reached for it.

But before I touched it, Andy spoke.

“Don’t open that.”

Everyone turned.

I looked at him.

“What?”

His face had lost all color.

“Summer, you don’t know what that is.”

I stared at him.

“My father wrote it.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

He didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I picked up the envelope.

The paper was old.

The edges were worn.

But it had survived.

Just like the truth.

I opened it slowly.

Inside was a letter.

The first line made my breath stop.

“My daughter, if you are reading this, it means they failed to keep you away from the truth.”

I covered my mouth.

Nobody spoke.

I continued reading.

“My greatest regret was leaving you without an explanation.”

My vision blurred.

“But I need you to know something. I did not leave because I wanted to.”

I looked at Andy.

He looked terrified.

The letter continued.

“I left because I discovered who was behind the money transfers.”

My heart raced.

I read the next sentence.

And everything changed.

“The person who betrayed me was not your mother.”

I stopped.

Everyone waited.

I turned the page.

The next line was written in darker ink.

Like my father had pressed the pen harder.

“The person who destroyed our family was…”

The lights suddenly flickered.

A loud sound came from outside.

Everyone turned.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a voice whispered:

“Summer…”

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had not heard it in decades.

The voice continued:

“Your father never disappeared.”

A pause.

“He was taken.”

My hand dropped.

May you like

The voice said one more thing.

And it was the name of the person who had been hiding the truth all along…
