Chapter 7 - The Betrayal Inside the Walls

Michael Harrison had spent his entire life believing that betrayal came from enemies.

Competitors.

Rivals.

People who wanted what he had built.

But now, sitting alone in his car outside the hospital, staring at the anonymous message on his phone, he realized something far more painful.

The people who hurt you the most were often the ones you trusted enough to let close.

The photograph remained on his screen.

Daniel Bennett standing in the parking garage.

Talking to someone.

Someone whose face was partially hidden by the angle of the camera.

Michael zoomed in.

His fingers moved across the screen slowly.

He wanted to know.

He needed to know.

But the image was too unclear.

Only one thing was certain.

Daniel had been meeting someone shortly before his death.

And someone had gone through great lengths to hide that information.

Michael looked toward the hospital entrance.

Inside those walls was Sophie.

A little girl who believed adults kept their promises.

A little girl who believed kindness still existed.

He couldn't let her down.

Not now.

Not after everything.

His phone rang.

Rachel.

He answered immediately.

"Tell me you traced the message."

"We're trying."

"Trying isn't enough."

There was silence.

Michael closed his eyes.

He realized his voice sounded like the same man he had always been.

The man who demanded results.

The man who pushed people until they broke.

But now, he wasn't fighting for a company.

He wasn't fighting for money.

He was fighting for a truth.

Rachel softened her voice.

"Michael."

"What?"

"You need to be careful."

He looked at the photograph again.

"Why?"

"Because whoever sent that message knows what you're doing."

Michael looked around the empty parking lot.

A strange feeling moved through him.

Someone was watching.

Someone knew.

"You think I'm in danger?"

"I think someone is scared."

Michael understood.

Fear made people dangerous.

Especially when they had something to lose.

The next morning, Michael returned to Harrison Global earlier than usual.

But this time, he didn't walk through the main entrance.

He entered through the private executive access.

He didn't want anyone knowing he was there.

Not yet.

Rachel met him in the underground parking area.

"You look like you didn't sleep."

"I didn't."

She handed him a folder.

"We found something."

Michael opened it.

Inside were financial records.

Old ones.

From nineteen years ago.

"The investigation team recovered deleted files from a backup server."

Michael looked through the documents.

Transactions.

Approvals.

Internal reports.

Then he saw a signature.

His hand stopped.

"This..."

Rachel nodded.

"That's what I thought."

Michael stared at the page.

The authorization wasn't from Thomas Reed.

It wasn't from a random executive.

It carried the name of someone else.

Someone he had never suspected.

Someone who had been beside him for years.

Richard Coleman.

His current chief operating officer.

Michael felt something sink inside him.

Richard.

The man who sat beside him during meetings.

The man who helped guide the company.

The man who always talked about loyalty.

"No."

Rachel watched him carefully.

"Michael."

"Richard has been with the company for fifteen years."

"I know."

"He helped rebuild the company after Thomas left."

"I know."

Michael looked at the documents again.

"Then why would he do this?"

Rachel didn't answer.

Because neither of them knew.

Michael called Richard into his office at noon.

The executive entered with his usual confident expression.

"Michael."

"Sit down."

Richard noticed the tone immediately.

Something was wrong.

"I heard there was an emergency meeting."

"There was."

Michael placed the documents on the desk.

Richard looked down.

And for a brief second, his face changed.

Fear.

Just like Thomas.

Michael noticed.

"You know what these are."

Richard slowly looked up.

"Where did you get those?"

Not denial.

Not confusion.

A question.

Michael leaned back.

"Interesting response."

Richard remained silent.

"You don't seem surprised."

Richard looked away.

"Michael..."

"No."

Michael's voice became firm.

"I want the truth."

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Then Richard sighed.

"I was hoping you would never find this."

The words felt like a betrayal.

Michael stared at him.

"Why?"

Richard looked exhausted.

Not like a criminal.

Like someone carrying a burden.

"Because I was trying to protect you."

Michael almost laughed.

"Protect me?"

"You have no idea what was happening inside this company."

"Then explain."

Richard looked toward the window.

"When you created Harrison Technology, everyone believed in your vision."

Michael stayed silent.

"But as the company grew, things changed."

"I know."

"No, you don't."

Richard turned back.

"The board started pressuring you. Investors wanted faster growth. More profits. Higher numbers."

Michael remembered.

The endless meetings.

The constant demands.

Richard continued.

"Thomas made decisions behind your back."

Michael frowned.

"Thomas?"

"Yes."

"Then why are your signatures on these documents?"

Richard looked down.

"Because I covered for him."

The room became silent.

Michael's anger shifted.

"Why?"

Richard swallowed.

"Because Daniel found out."

Michael froze.

There it was.

Daniel.

Again.

"Tell me everything."

Richard sat down slowly.

"Daniel discovered that Thomas was moving money from the assistance fund."

Michael listened carefully.

"He wanted to expose him."

"Why didn't he?"

Richard looked away.

"Because Thomas threatened him."

Michael's jaw tightened.

"Threatened him how?"

"He told Daniel that if he spoke, people would lose their jobs. The company would collapse. Thousands of employees would suffer."

Michael shook his head.

"That doesn't explain why you helped hide it."

Richard closed his eyes.

"Because I was afraid."

The honesty surprised Michael.

"Afraid of Thomas?"

Richard nodded.

"He had influence. Connections. He knew how to manipulate people."

Michael looked at the documents.

"And Daniel?"

Richard became quiet.

"Daniel kept searching."

A pause.

"Even after Thomas left."

Michael felt cold.

"Thomas left because Daniel was close to exposing him."

Richard nodded.

"But Daniel didn't stop."

Michael looked at him.

"Then why was his death called an accident?"

Richard didn't answer.

And that silence was enough.

That afternoon, Michael returned to the hospital.

He needed to see Emily.

He needed to know everything.

When he entered the room, Sophie was asleep in the chair beside her mother.

Her small hand was still holding Emily's.

Michael stopped.

The sight broke something inside him.

A child who was afraid of losing her mother.

A mother who was fighting to stay alive.

A family that had nothing.

Yet somehow had more love than many people with everything.

Emily opened her eyes.

"Michael?"

He sat quietly.

"I know the truth about Daniel."

Her expression changed.

"What did you find?"

Michael looked at Sophie.

Then lowered his voice.

"Thomas wasn't the only person involved."

Emily looked worried.

"Who?"

"Richard Coleman."

She closed her eyes.

"I was afraid of that."

Michael looked surprised.

"You knew?"

"Daniel suspected."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Emily looked at him.

"Because Daniel wanted proof."

Michael sighed.

"He always believed the truth mattered."

Emily smiled sadly.

"That was Daniel."

A quiet moment passed.

Then Michael asked:

"Emily."

"Yes?"

"Why did Sophie end up finding me?"

Emily looked toward her sleeping daughter.

A tear appeared in her eye.

"Because she remembered something Daniel told her."

"What?"

She smiled faintly.

"When people need help, look for someone who still has kindness left inside them."

Michael looked at Sophie.

The little girl who had walked up to him on a busy street.

The little girl who changed his life without realizing it.

Emily whispered:

"Daniel believed you were that person."

Michael looked down.

For years, he had chased success because he wanted to prove he mattered.

But Daniel had seen something in him before he saw it himself.

That evening, Michael called a private meeting with federal investigators.

He gave them everything.

The financial records.

The documents.

The evidence connecting Thomas and Richard.

But before the investigation became public, Michael received one final message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

You think you found the truth. You only found the beginning.

Michael stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

Ask yourself why Daniel trusted you enough to leave that letter.

Michael frowned.

A final image appeared.

A photograph of Daniel.

Holding a file.

The same file Michael had never seen.

On the cover were four words:

HARRISON GLOBAL PROJECT ZERO

Michael felt his heart stop.

Project Zero.

A name he had never heard before.

A project hidden from him.

A project connected to Daniel.

And suddenly, Michael understood.

The betrayal inside Harrison Global was deeper than he imagined.

Someone hadn't just stolen money.

Someone had hidden an entire chapter of the company's history.

And Daniel Bennett had died trying to reveal it.

Michael looked at the photograph of Sophie on his desk.

Then at the mysterious file.

The truth was no longer just about the past.

It was about what was still happening.

And whoever was behind it had just made one mistake.

They reminded Michael Harrison of the man he used to be.

A man who never gave up.

A man who fought until he found the truth.

May you like

And this time...

He wasn't fighting alone.
