Chapter 3 - The Man Hidden In My Grandmother’s Past

A photograph fell onto the marble floor.

I picked it up with shaking hands.

The man standing beside my grandmother was not a stranger.

He was Daniel’s father.

But the date written on the back was twenty years before Daniel was born.

And underneath it was one sentence:

"Never let Claire discover the truth."

I stared at the photograph until the image blurred.

Daniel’s father.

Richard Cross.

I knew the name.

Everyone in the business world knew the name.

He was a ruthless investor who built his fortune by buying struggling companies and selling them for profit.

A man my grandmother always described as dangerous.

But she never told me why.

She never told me they knew each other.

She never told me they stood together in front of the first Whitmore Hotel construction site.

I turned the photograph around again.

The handwriting was my grandmother’s.

The warning was hers.

"Never let Claire discover the truth."

My fingers tightened.

"Thomas..."

The attorney didn't answer.

He looked like a man who had just watched a ghost return.

"You knew."

His eyes moved away.

"Your grandmother asked me to keep this secret."

"You knew Daniel’s father was connected to my family?"

He sighed.

"Yes."

The betrayal felt endless.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except me.

My entire life suddenly felt like a story where I was the only person who hadn't been given the script.

"Tell me everything."

Thomas looked at the photograph.

Then he slowly sat down.

"Twenty-five years ago, before the Whitmore Grand Hotel became what it is today, your grandmother was struggling."

I listened.

"She had the vision. She had the land. She had the determination. But she didn't have enough capital to complete the project."

I looked at the hotel around me.

The marble floors.

The crystal chandeliers.

The empire my grandmother created.

"You mean she needed investors."

Thomas nodded.

"Richard Cross was one of them."

I froze.

"Daniel's father."

"Yes."

"Why didn't she ever mention him?"

Thomas looked at me.

"Because the partnership ended badly."

I looked down at the photograph.

"What happened?"

Thomas hesitated.

Then he opened another file.

Inside were old contracts.

Original hotel agreements.

Financial documents.

And one signature.

Richard Cross.

"Richard didn't just invest in your grandmother's hotel."

Thomas placed another paper in front of me.

"He tried to take it."

I stared at the document.

A transfer agreement.

A document that would have given Richard control over the hotel.

"He tried to steal it?"

"Not exactly."

Thomas paused.

"He tried to convince your grandmother that she couldn't succeed without him."

I remembered my grandmother.

Her stubbornness.

Her strength.

She never let anyone control her.

"So she refused."

Thomas nodded.

"And that's when everything changed."

I looked at him.

"What did Richard do?"

"He threatened her."

The word landed heavily.

"He told her that if she didn't accept his terms, he would destroy her reputation, her business, and everything she built."

I looked around the room.

The hotel suddenly felt different.

Like every wall carried a secret.

"But she survived."

"Yes."

"How?"

Thomas looked at the photograph.

"Because someone helped her."

My heartbeat slowed.

"Who?"

He didn't answer.

Because I already knew.

I looked back at the picture.

There was another person standing in the background.

Half hidden.

A young man.

Someone I hadn't noticed before.

I moved closer.

"Who is that?"

Thomas became silent.

"Thomas."

His face changed.

"I don't know if I should tell you."

I felt anger rising.

"Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle."

I slammed my hand against the desk.

"My husband lied to me. His family planned against me. My grandmother left me clues instead of answers. I deserve the truth."

Thomas looked at me for a long moment.

Then he finally spoke.

"That man was your father."

The room went completely still.

I couldn't breathe.

"My father?"

I had spent years believing my parents died when I was young.

There were no secrets.

No mysteries.

No hidden stories.

At least, that's what I thought.

"My grandmother never told me he was involved with the hotel."

"Because she was protecting you."

"From what?"

Thomas looked at the documents.

"From Richard Cross."

I shook my head.

"But my father died before I was old enough to remember."

Thomas nodded slowly.

"That is what you were told."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What does that mean?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he pulled out another folder.

Inside was an old newspaper clipping.

The headline made my heart stop.

"LOCAL BUSINESSMAN MISSING AFTER HOTEL DISPUTE."

The picture beside the article was my father.

I touched the paper.

My hands were trembling.

"Missing?"

Thomas nodded.

"Your grandmother spent years searching for him."

"Why did nobody tell me?"

"Because she believed someone was watching."

I looked up.

"Who?"

Thomas didn't need to say the name.

Because the answer was already sitting in front of me.

Richard Cross.

The same family Daniel came from.

The same family that suddenly wanted a divorce after my inheritance.

The same family my grandmother had spent decades avoiding.

I grabbed my phone.

Daniel’s message was still open.

"Your grandmother never told you the truth about how she built the hotel."

Now I understood.

He wasn't threatening me.

He was warning me.

Or pretending to.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I stared at his name.

Thomas looked at me.

"Don't answer."

"Why?"

"Because if he knows what we found, he will know your grandmother's plan failed."

I looked at the screen.

The phone kept ringing.

I answered.

"Why did you marry me?"

Silence.

Daniel didn't expect that question.

"Claire..."

"No."

My voice shook.

"I want the truth."

A long pause.

Then he said something I never expected.

"I was never supposed to fall in love with you."

My heart broke again.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel breathed heavily.

"Claire, you don't understand what your grandmother did."

"What did she do?"

Another pause.

Then his voice became quieter.

"She destroyed my family."

I stood frozen.

"What?"

"My father lost everything because of Eleanor Whitmore."

I looked at Thomas.

He was watching me carefully.

Daniel continued.

"You think your grandmother was a hero?"

His voice hardened.

"She wasn't."

I closed my eyes.

"Why are you telling me this now?"

"Because I saw the documents."

My blood ran cold.

"What documents?"

"The ones your grandmother left."

I looked at Thomas.

Daniel knew.

But how?

"How did you know about them?"

Silence.

Then Daniel answered.

"Because someone inside the hotel sent them to me."

Thomas immediately stood.

"Claire, end the call."

But before I could speak, Daniel whispered:

"Ask Thomas why your grandmother hired a private investigator to follow my father twenty years ago."

The call ended.

I lowered the phone.

Thomas looked terrified.

"Who sent him the documents?"

He didn't answer.

"Thomas."

His face turned pale.

"Claire..."

The lights in the office suddenly flickered.

Then the old security system screen turned on.

A camera feed appeared.

Someone was standing outside the hotel’s private entrance.

A person wearing a dark coat.

Waiting.

Thomas stared at the screen.

And whispered:

"That person should not be alive."

I stepped closer to the monitor.

The figure slowly removed their hood.

And the camera revealed a face I had never seen before.

A face Thomas recognized immediately.

May you like

Because he whispered one name:

"Your father."
