Chapter 6 - The Heir

Claire stopped breathing.

Dante ripped the phone from her hand.

“They took him?”

Marco moved instantly toward the locked doors.

Adrian laughed.

“Too late.”

Dante slammed him against the altar.

“If he has one scratch—”

“You'll what? Kill me?”

Adrian smiled.

“Then you'll never find him.”

Dante released him.

That was the first intelligent thing he'd done since the message arrived.

Claire forced herself to think.

Doctor mode.

Problem.

Information.

Solution.

“Who took him?”

Adrian looked at her.

“Men who understand loyalty.”

“Where?”

“You think I tell hostages where they're being taken?”

Claire stepped closer.

“Luca isn't a hostage.”

“What would you call him?”

“Your nephew.”

Something flickered across Adrian's face.

Gone immediately.

Claire saw it.

“You've met him.”

Adrian's smile vanished.

Dante looked between them.

“What?”

Claire continued.

“You've seen Luca before.”

Adrian said nothing.

“You knew what he looked like without photographs.”

Dante stepped forward.

“When?”

Adrian stared at Claire.

She understood.

“The playground.”

Marco looked at her.

“What?”

“The man taking pictures last year.”

Marco shook his head.

“That wasn't Adrian.”

“No.”

Claire remembered.

Another man.

Standing near the ice-cream truck.

Expensive shoes.

Dark glasses.

Luca had bumped into him.

The stranger had picked up Luca's dropped toy.

“You were there.”

Adrian's silence answered.

Claire's voice lowered.

“Luca said you told him his dinosaur was cool.”

Dante's anger changed into confusion.

Adrian looked away.

“You spoke to my son?”

“He was a child.”

“He is your nephew.”

“I know what he is.”

Claire stepped closer.

“No. You know what he inherits.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

She kept pushing.

“You could have taken him that day.”

Marco stared.

Claire was right.

“You had him five feet away,” she said. “No guards. No Dante. No FBI.”

Adrian said nothing.

“Why didn't you?”

Dante understood.

“He couldn't.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Don't turn me into something sentimental.”

Dante stared at his brother.

“You couldn't hurt him.”

“I can now.”

“No.”

Dante stepped closer.

“You can threaten him. Photograph him. Use other men.”

Adrian's eyes hardened.

“But you can't touch him.”

Claire saw it.

The crack.

Small.

But real.

Adrian hated Dante.

He wanted power.

He had orchestrated terrible things.

Yet Luca had somehow become a boundary even Adrian couldn't cross himself.

Claire seized it.

“Where is he?”

Adrian looked away.

“Where?”

Silence.

Then gunfire erupted outside.

Everyone turned.

The chapel doors burst open.

Special Agent Nora Hayes entered first, shoulder bandaged, weapon raised.

Behind her came federal agents.

And Samuel Hayes.

Alive.

Adrian's face changed.

“No.”

Samuel aimed directly at him.

“It took six years.”

Adrian backed toward the altar.

“You have nothing.”

Samuel held up a recorder.

“Actually, you just gave us kidnapping, extortion, conspiracy, and attempted murder.”

Adrian stared at Claire.

She looked down.

The button on her coat.

A tiny microphone Isabella had given her before entering.

Adrian laughed once.

“You planned this?”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Dante looked at her.

“When?”

“When Isabella told me about Samuel.”

Dante almost smiled.

Adrian's face twisted.

“You think this ends anything?”

Samuel approached.

“It ends your afternoon.”

“Luca.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Where is he?”

Adrian stared.

Federal agents moved closer.

Finally he whispered an address.

Marco wrote it down.

Dante started toward the door.

Samuel blocked him.

“No.”

“My son is there.”

“We handle it.”

“You move too slowly.”

“You can barely stand.”

Dante tried to pass.

Claire grabbed his arm.

“Dante.”

He looked at her.

“Let them.”

“My son—”

“Our son.”

He stopped.

Claire's voice shook.

“Let them bring him home.”

Federal vehicles raced toward an abandoned riverside hotel fifteen miles away.

Claire waited inside the command vehicle.

Every second became an hour.

Dante sat beside her.

Blood had begun seeping through his dressing again.

Claire noticed.

“You're bleeding.”

“I don't care.”

“I do.”

He looked at her.

She opened the medical bag.

“Shirt.”

“Claire.”

“Now.”

He obeyed.

She reinforced the dressing.

Her hands were steady.

His weren't.

“I'm scared,” he whispered.

Claire looked up.

She had never heard Dante Moretti say those words.

“So am I.”

“If something happens—”

“Don't.”

“Claire.”

“No.”

She finished the bandage.

“We aren't writing the ending before we know it.”

He stared at her.

“You always did hate pessimism.”

“I hate you making decisions alone more.”

A faint smile appeared.

Then gunshots sounded in the distance.

Claire froze.

Radio chatter exploded.

“Agents entering west corridor.”

“Two suspects detained.”

“Searching second floor.”

Dante grabbed Claire's hand.

Neither acknowledged it.

One minute.

Two.

Then—

“Child located.”

Claire sobbed.

Dante's head dropped.

“Alive?”

The radio crackled.

“Alive. Uninjured.”

Claire covered her face.

Dante held her.

For the first time in six years, she let him.

Twenty minutes later Luca came running from an ambulance.

“Mom!”

Claire dropped to her knees.

He crashed into her arms.

Dante stood behind them.

Luca looked at him.

Then ran again.

“Dad!”

Dante almost fell catching him.

He held Luca with both arms.

No fear of blood.

No fear of pain.

Nothing mattered.

Claire watched them.

Something inside her loosened.

Not healed.

But loosened.

Adrian was arrested.

Keller surrendered.

Marco entered federal protective custody in exchange for testimony.

Isabella disappeared before anyone could question her.

Again.

Claire wasn't surprised.

Three days later, Dante remained hospitalized.

Luca visited daily.

Claire pretended she came only because she was his doctor.

Nobody believed her.

One evening Luca fell asleep in the chair.

Dante watched him.

“He snores.”

Claire smiled.

“Like you.”

“I don't snore.”

“You used to shake windows.”

Dante laughed quietly.

Then silence.

“Claire.”

She looked up.

“When I'm released, I'm leaving.”

Her smile disappeared.

“What?”

“I agreed to testify.”

“Against Adrian?”

“Against everyone.”

Claire stared.

“The whole organization?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked at Luca.

“Because he deserves a father who can walk into a school without armed men.”

Claire swallowed.

“What happens to you?”

“Witness protection, maybe.”

“And us?”

Dante looked at her.

“I won't ask you to come.”

Anger rose instantly.

“You're doing it again.”

“What?”

“Deciding alone.”

“I am trying to keep you safe.”

“You don't get to disappear.”

“Claire—”

“You don't get to leave Luca after he just found you.”

“I may not have a choice.”

“Then fight for one.”

He stared.

She stepped closer.

“You told me six years ago you'd fix everything.”

“I failed.”

“Then finish it now.”

Dante's eyes filled.

“Does that mean you want me to stay?”

Claire looked at him.

“I don't know what I want from you.”

He nodded.

“But Luca wants a father.”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

She hesitated.

“I want the truth.”

“You have it.”

“All of it?”

Dante went still.

Claire noticed.

“What?”

“There's one more thing.”

Of course there was.

“What?”

Dante looked toward sleeping Luca.

“My father didn't leave those companies to Luca.”

Claire frowned.

“Isabella said—”

“She was wrong.”

“How do you know?”

“My mother's letter.”

“What did it say?”

Dante reached beneath his pillow.

He pulled out another page.

Claire stared.

“You had another page?”

“It was folded inside the first.”

“You hid it.”

“Yes.”

She nearly walked out.

“Read it.”

Claire unfolded the paper.

The first paragraph concerned the inheritance.

The second changed everything.

Claire read it twice.

Then looked at Dante.

“This can't be true.”

“It is.”

The legitimate Moretti fortune had not been left to Luca.

It had been placed in trust six years ago.

For Claire.

Every dollar.

Every building.

Every company.

Her name appeared on the final line.

Claire Callahan Moretti.

Claire stared at Dante.

“I never married you.”

Dante's face went pale.

“No.”

“Then why does this document say I did?”

A knock came at the door.

A federal attorney entered carrying a sealed courthouse file.

“Dr. Callahan?”

Claire looked at him.

May you like

He placed the file on the table.

“We found the marriage certificate.”
