Chapter 6 - The Sister Who Vanished

Sofia Falcone had been seventeen when she disappeared.

Dario had believed she was dead.

Everyone had.

Dominic told him she had been sent to relatives in Sicily after the warehouse massacre.

Then months passed.

No letters.

No calls.

Eventually Dominic claimed she had died in a car accident outside Palermo.

Dario had mourned her without a body.

Now Sofia stood twenty feet away.

Older.

Thinner.

A pale scar crossed her temple.

Lily held her hand.

“Sofia.”

Dario’s voice broke.

She looked at him.

“You got old.”

He laughed once.

A broken sound.

“So did you.”

Lily ran toward Elena.

Elena dropped to her knees and crushed her daughter against her chest.

Dario kept staring at Sofia.

“Why?”

She understood everything inside that single word.

“I couldn’t come back.”

“Why?”

“Dominic.”

Dario’s jaw tightened.

Sofia explained quickly.

After the warehouse massacre, she overheard Dominic discussing the plan with Marco.

She confronted him.

Dominic panicked.

He sent her away under guard.

But one guard helped her escape.

For years Sofia lived under another name.

She eventually learned Marco was alive and began quietly tracing him.

“Why didn’t you contact me?”

“Because you belonged to Dominic.”

“I was your brother.”

“You were becoming him.”

The truth hurt.

Sofia looked at Lily.

“Nathan Mercer found me two years before he died.”

Elena stared.

“Nathan knew you?”

“Yes.”

“He never told me.”

“He was protecting you.”

Sofia had helped Nathan investigate Marco’s companies.

Nathan discovered the evidence that ended up hidden inside Lily’s bear.

The night Nathan died, he called Sofia.

“He said someone had betrayed him.”

“Who?” Elena asked.

Sofia’s face tightened.

“He never said.”

Dario heard movement upstairs.

Federal agents.

“Is Marco alive?”

Sofia nodded.

“He escaped through the west side.”

Dario cursed.

“Dominic?”

“Shot.”

“Dead?”

“No.”

Dario looked toward the stairs.

Dominic had betrayed him.

Destroyed both families.

Allowed Marco to terrorize a child.

Yet when the final moment came, he had turned against Marco.

Not enough to erase anything.

Enough to complicate it.

They were escorted outside.

Dominic was taken by ambulance under federal guard.

Marco vanished.

For two days, Brooklyn exploded with arrests.

The evidence from Nathan’s drive exposed judges, union officials, shipping executives, police officers and criminals across three states.

Dario voluntarily surrendered financial records from his own organization.

News helicopters hovered above federal buildings.

Every television station carried his name.

Elena watched coverage from a safe apartment.

“MAFIA BOSS DARIO FALCONE COOPERATING WITH FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.”

Lily pointed.

“You’re on TV.”

Dario sighed.

“I noticed.”

“You look mad.”

“I was.”

“You always look a little mad.”

Elena laughed.

Dario looked offended.

“I do not.”

Sofia entered with coffee.

“You absolutely do.”

For forty-eight hours, an impossible family formed around danger.

Elena.

Lily.

Dario.

Sofia.

Vincent.

People whose lives should never have crossed gathered around takeout containers and police updates.

Lily somehow made it feel normal.

She demanded pancakes.

She asked federal agents whether handcuffs hurt.

She drew pictures on evidence-free notepads.

She made Dario watch a cartoon about talking dogs.

At one point she climbed beside him on the couch and fell asleep against his arm.

Dario did not move for ninety minutes.

Elena noticed.

“You can breathe.”

“She’ll wake up.”

“She sleeps through thunderstorms.”

Dario looked down at Lily.

“I don’t want to disturb her.”

Elena sat across from him.

“You’re different with her.”

“So are you.”

“I’m her mother.”

Dario nodded.

“That seems harder.”

“It is.”

“Worth it?”

Elena smiled.

“Every second.”

Dario looked at the sleeping child.

“I understand.”

The words carried more than he intended.

Elena heard it.

“You would have been a good father.”

Dario looked at her.

“You don’t know that.”

“I knew the boy you were.”

“He died.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“He just learned to hide.”

Dario looked away.

Later that evening, Elena found him alone on the balcony.

“You’re going to prison?”

“Possibly.”

“How long?”

“My attorney thinks cooperation matters.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“Maybe several years.”

Elena’s face fell.

Dario continued.

“I’ve done things I have to answer for.”

“You could run.”

“Yes.”

“You won’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

He looked through the glass at Lily sleeping beside Sofia.

“Because running is how all of this started.”

Elena stepped beside him.

“Twenty years ago, you left because you thought staying would get me killed.”

“Yes.”

“You never asked what I wanted.”

“No.”

“You broke my heart.”

“I know.”

“I hated you.”

“I know.”

She looked at him.

“I loved Nathan.”

“I know.”

“He deserved better than what happened to him.”

“Yes.”

“And none of that means I stopped remembering you.”

Dario turned.

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“I kept that stupid photograph because I needed proof that the boy I loved had actually existed.”

Dario swallowed.

“He did.”

“I’m starting to believe that.”

They stood inches apart.

Dario did not touch her.

Not until Elena reached for his hand.

Their fingers intertwined.

Twenty years disappeared again.

But this time the past did not feel like a wound.

It felt like a road leading somewhere uncertain.

Then Sofia entered.

“We found Marco.”

Dario turned immediately.

“Where?”

“A motel near LaGuardia.”

Federal agents surrounded the motel.

Dario was told to stay away.

He did.

For exactly twenty-three minutes.

Then his phone rang.

Marco.

“You really think this ends with prison?”

Dario stepped away from Elena.

“It ends with you answering for Nathan.”

Marco laughed.

“Nathan.”

Dario went still.

“What?”

“You still don’t know who killed him.”

Dario’s stomach dropped.

“You did.”

“No.”

“You ordered it.”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Marco was silent.

Dario heard sirens through the phone.

Federal agents closing in.

Marco said, “Nathan trusted the wrong Falcone.”

Dario looked toward Sofia.

She was watching him.

“What does that mean?”

Marco laughed softly.

Then the motel room door crashed open on his end.

Shouts.

Gunfire.

The call cut.

Dario stared at the phone.

Sofia asked, “What did he say?”

Dario looked at his sister.

Before he could answer, Elena’s phone buzzed.

A new email.

Sent five years earlier.

Scheduled for delivery only if Nathan’s private server was accessed.

Elena opened it.
