SILENT LIES OF THE CRADLE / Chapter 2 / 3

Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Trust

""Julian?"" Marcus choked out the name, clutching the phone so tightly his knuckles turned white. ""Is that... how are you calling me?""

The line crackled with heavy static, followed by the faint sound of windshield wipers scraping against glass.

""If you want the truth about Leo, Marcus, come to the old boathouse at Blackwood Lake in one hour. Alone. If Eleanor comes, or if you call the police, the raw DNA files go directly to the press, and the family estate gets liquidated by the federal bankruptcy court.""

The line went dead.

Marcus slowly lowered the receiver. Eleanor was watching him, her face pale, holding the military document close to her chest. ""Who was that?"" she demanded. ""Marcus, talk to me!""

""It was Julian,"" Marcus whispered.

Eleanor gasped, stepping back against the staircase railing. ""Julian is dead! We identified the body, Marcus! We stood at the casket!""

""It was a closed casket, Ellie,"" Marcus said, the horrifying realization finally dawning on him. ""Dental records were used because the crash burned the car to the ground. But what if those records were swapped?""

Without another word, Marcus grabbed his heavy coat from the rack.

""You can't go there alone!"" Eleanor cried out, catching his arm. ""If Julian is alive, he staged his own death. He’s dangerous! What about Leo? What if this is a trap to take Leo away from us forever?""

""I have to know the truth, Ellie,"" Marcus said, looking deep into her eyes. ""If I don't go, Chloe destroys our family tomorrow morning anyway. Watch Leo. Lock all the doors. Don't let anyone in except the security team.""

Thirty minutes later, Marcus’s SUV was navigating the narrow, winding dirt paths leading to Blackwood Lake. Snow was beginning to fall heavily, blanketing the pines in eerie white shadows. The old family boathouse sat at the edge of the dark, frozen water, its weathered wooden planks groaning against the winter wind.

Marcus killed the engine and stepped out into the freeze. The only sound was the rustling of pine needles and his own footsteps crunching on the packed ice. He walked toward the boathouse door, pulling a heavy flashlight from his pocket.

He pushed the door open. It creaked loudly on rusty hinges.

Inside, the air smelled of mold, lake water, and stale cigarette smoke. Sitting on an overturned wooden crate in the center of the dusty floor was a single laptop computer, its screen casting a dim blue glow across the room. Next to it sat a baby monitor, glowing with a steady green power light.

Marcus approached the setup cautiously. ""Julian?"" he called out into the darkness. ""Are you here?""

The laptop screen flickered to life. A video file began to play automatically. It was a recording from a surveillance camera inside a high-end medical clinic, stamped with a date from six years ago.

On the screen, a man in a doctor's coat was handing a sealed file to Chloe. But the man standing next to Chloe wasn't Marcus, and it wasn't Julian. It was Marcus’s father—the late founder of Vance Enterprises, who had passed away three years prior.

Suddenly, footsteps echoed behind him. Marcus spun around, raising his flashlight.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the falling snow, was Chloe. She wasn't carrying a child, and she wasn't smiling anymore. In her hand was a thick, black leather-bound binder.

""You really thought Julian was alive?"" Chloe said softly, stepping into the boathouse. ""That voice modulation software is incredible nowadays, isn't it? It only takes ten seconds of old voicemail samples to synthesize anyone's voice.""

""You lured me out here,"" Marcus said, his voice deadly calm. ""Why?""

""Because you were never going to look at the trust fund accounting unless you thought your brother was coming back from the dead to claim it,"" Chloe said, dropping the binder onto the wooden table between them. ""Open it, Marcus. Read your father’s final testament.""

Marcus stepped forward and flipped open the heavy ledger. Inside were hundreds of pages of bank transfers, offshore trust accounts, and adoption decree applications.

As Marcus read through the legal language, his jaw dropped.

Leo was not Julian’s child. Leo was not Marcus’s child.

Leo was the secret biological son of their late father, born to a surrogate overseas just before his death. The old man had created the baby to serve as the ultimate sole heir to the entire Vance corporate empire, bypassing Marcus, Julian, and Eleanor entirely. To protect the child from corporate rivals, the father had forced Julian and Chloe to act as legal parents under a binding non-disclosure contract tied to a fifty-million-dollar trust fund.

""Julian didn't die in an accident, Marcus,"" Chloe said, her voice shaking with genuine emotion for the first time. ""He found out that your father’s old business partners were planning to liquidate the trust and eliminate the heir—Leo. Julian staged his disappearance to go into hiding, but they caught up with him on the mountain road.""

""So the car crash..."" Marcus breathed out.

""Was murder,"" Chloe finished. ""And the people who killed Julian are coming for Leo tonight because at midnight on his sixth birthday—which is tonight—the entire Vance corporate trust automatically transfers ownership to whoever has physical custody of the child.""

Marcus’s heart stopped. He pulled out his phone. The screen displayed no signal—a signal jammer was active in the area.

At that exact moment, the baby monitor on the wooden table crackled to life.

Through the static came the sound of breaking glass from Marcus’s home, followed by Eleanor’s panicked voice echoing through the small speaker: ""Marcus! Someone is in the house! They're taking Leo!""
